Tripper's Profile

Gold Beach

Even if you aren't staying at Tu Tu Tun Lodge I think you can make a reservation for dinner. The wine list is excellent...many great choices by the glass even. Beautiful setting...good multi-course family style dinners.

Friday Harbor

Thought I would respond to my own request. Just returned from Friday Harbor. It was off season so some places were closed or on reduced hours...as a result we were unable to visit Duck Soup which is a mile or so out of town. Next time. We had a very nice dinner at The Place...excellent service...great hailbut...nice salads. They have happy hour from 5-6PM. Our favorite breakfast was at the Churchill Coffee House. Excellent breakfast sandwiches and good bagels. It is close to the ferry. Two pretty good lunches at Cask and Schooner and Blue Water Bar and Grill.

Friday Harbor

Will be in Friday Harbor mid week in early May. Seeking recs. Duck Soup will not be open the three days we are there unfortunately. Any price range...any cuisine...simply seeking best options for three breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Thanks in advance.

Old-Fashioned NYC-Style "Cantonese" Chinese-American Food in Seattle?

Where is the South China Cafe?

Ravioli?

Any restaurants near downtown that specialize in ravioli?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Jewish style deli food in Denver?

We were there last July and it was very good deli. It had everything we typically order at a deli and was good quality.

Wine with Beef Stew

Sad to report not only did I fail to make the stew with a 1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild...it won't be served tonight with it either :) I did have several bottles of Cotes du Rhone in the basement that I had forgotten. Both are 2007...Domaine Clavel and Domaine du Trapadis. I have enough of each that if one is not good we can just drink the other. Wish me luck...

Wine with Beef Stew

It is a wine drinking crowd...so yes. But thanks...I plan to do this again with a couple of friends who like beer...so that is a great suggestion.

Wine with Beef Stew

I would but I generally don't use a $20 or $30 bottle of wine to cook with when the recipe calls for a full bottle. I was hoping to do a bit better.

Wine with Beef Stew

Thanks...

Wine with Beef Stew

I would say the stew is not spicey, sweet or bitter. It is made with wine and has a rich, beefy taste. I have several wine stores near by with fairly broad selections. I don't make this dish often so I haven't tried a range of wine with it. I like wine in general...but best when the wine/food combination really sings. My price range is up to $40 a bottle.

Wine with Beef Stew

Would appreciate your thoughts on a great wine with beef stew. I make the 2008 Gourmet December 2008 version with carrots and potatoes. Would love something that would enhance a really nice stew.

Thanks in advance...

Dinner for 6, when the table seats 4 and it's a small home

I'm with Esconido...cozy is great for dinner parties. I do it all the time...

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

I too tried a "recipe" from one of the books...maple syrup on fresh snow. I didn't find it as wonderful as Laura did!

Restaurants near Safeco Field

Thank you...the perfect mix! Will have American junk food prior to the game and check out one of the Asian places in the ID the other night...thanks!

1 lb. Can of Lump Crab Meat - What's Your Favorite Recipe?

The crab canape recipe from the January 1994 issue of Gourmet i excellent. Still available on Epicurious. It makes enough for a crowd so great for parties.

Restaurants near Safeco Field

Suggestions for restaurants within walking distance (20 minutes or so) of Safeco Field. Thanks in advance... We'll be there for a game in May, but plan to stay near the park for several days.

Lunch near Tempe Performing Arts Theater

Thanks for the suggestions...everyone loved House of Tricks...nice setting...very good food...and excellent service. They doted on the 5 and 90 year old.

Swearing off using convection oven

I too have had issues with convection when baking. I have some recipes that work beautifully...others where I am better off using the regular bake option. I have started noting that on my recipes. For some reason cakes seem to not work as well using convection. Cookies not as well. Puff pastry seems great with convection...

Negative posts being removed?

I find they remove my posts when I criticize Walmart for their company policies or make comments related to the politics of food. I always found it interesting that the final eight or nine years of Gourmet under Ruth Reichl had many articles on the politics of food...but the Chowhound Team fails to find this worthy of their blog. Otherwise I have not had posts removed.

North Shore Hot Dog Company (Puka Dog Facsimile in Boise?)

Is this in Boise or Meridian?

Your favorite cooking magazine ranked.

I still get them all...but miss Gourmet...especially the pre_Ruth years. Nothing compares so I get them all and then hope to find something in each. I also added three travel magazines to make up for that aspect of Gourmet.

Smashburger: America's Most Promising Company

I typically don't eat fast food more than once or twice a year, but purchased a Groupon for Smashburger when I found they have onion straws...something we don't have in Boise ID. I thought the onion straws were pretty good and the burgers acceptable for fast food. I miss the midwest with so many excellent places for burgers...

Penzeys?

I have ordered spices from Penzey's for over 20 years. When I have lived in cities with stores I have purchased there as well. I think the mail order spices are often the freshest...so for the cost of shipping I get a better product. My experience...

My husband's most hated restaurant trend is "farm to table".

Incredible Cookies from Lousy Ingredients and Pedestrian Recipe

So I made them....watched the video twice...followed his recipe and weighed everything. They were good but not great...bet Von's are better. I think my personal taste leans towards more butter taste with my cookies. Maybe I should try it with butter flavored crisco or butter as suggested on my box of Quaker Oats.

Does anyone actually put stuffing inside the turkey anymore?

I make a double batch of stuffing...half in the bird...half in a casserole dish...mix together later. it is pretty good!

Lunch near Tempe Performing Arts Theater

Going to a children's play on a Friday at the Tempe Performing Arts Theater. Will have a five year old, 90 year old and two in between. Any ideas for lunch within walking distance? Any price range...not too exotic or unusual.

nouveau beaujolais? who drinks this stuff?

It isn't the wine I buy more than three or four bottles of...but I generally pick up a few each year. Our local wine shop sets up tastings on Thursday so you know what you are getting. A fun tradition...nothing more.
