How about some restaurants with dec \ent lighting?
I'm so tired of dining il n the gloom; using my penlight to read the menu. And these gloomy restaurants are often the ones with music tracks that are like a knife driven between your eyes. I know, I know - my daughter's response was, "if it's too loud, you're too old". Maybe so. But still, what are your favorite (if any) restaurants with entrees under $30 (or even $25), where I can look at my food (a feast for the eyes?) and hear my companion's conversation? I sometimes wonder, what are they hiding in all that darkness? What awful thing might I see, if I turned over a leaf? So give it your best shot.
squeeze bottle noodles
I recently saw a recipe for making noodles by mixing flour-water-eggs and putting the mixture in a squeeze bottle, squeezing a narrow stream in a circular pattern directly into a hot pan, and, voila!! a mound of soft noodles. There wasn't much to the recipe, but the illustrations showing the technique were pretty good, and I'd like to find it again because I don't trust my memory. Has anyone seen this? I want to use the noodles under a chicken paprikash I"m making tonight. Thanks
Driving Route I-90, I 82 and I 15, Seattle to Salt Lake City, Utah. Where to eat?
It's a long drive. I know where to eat in Seattle and Salt Lake City, but a guy's gotta eat along the road -- or maybe a couple of miles off-ramp. Can some of you mountain state folks make suggestions? I'll eat dam' near anything, so long as it does 't cost too much. So, what have you got? Thanks from a hungry driver.
What else to do with electric rice cooker?
You ought to be able to do more with an electric rice cooker than just cooking plain rice. What other uses have you found for it? For me, I'm gonna get some barbequed rice strips from Chinatown (hanging in the store windows down there), slice it up, put it in the bottom of the cooker with some rice and water, and turn it on; I'll see how it comes out. But d there ought to be some more interesting ways to use the cooker.....shouldn't there? Please share.
best (or even good) cheap lunch in Koreatown?
The title says (or asks ) it all. What can you suggest for a real cheapie like me, for lunch>\?
Other possible uses for rice cooker?
Baking? How and what? Seems odd, but definitely interesting
Other possible uses for rice cooker?
I have a small rice cooker, which makes pretty decent rice, but there must be some other ways to use it. Any suggestions?
Where to feed a vegetarian (who'll eat a little fish) down by the high line?
I need a restaurant down by the High Line to feed a non-meat eating friend; she prefers a vegetarian restaurant, but can usually find something in a Mexican or sushi place. Any suggestions, in that area?
Where to buy shao bing>
Where can I buy the shao bing buns (the ones with sesame coating)? I had the lamburger with cumin at Xi An yesterday, and in retrospect the buns were pretty close. There used to be a bing place on - I think - 3d St, off 6th Avenue, but it's gone now, and I don't know of any similar replacement.
Your favorite non-Cantonese restaurant in Manhattan's Chinatown
For a change, I'm interested in trying some somewhat dilfferent Chinese restaurants in Chinatown -- Jiaangsu, Fujian, Dongbei, or whatever? Any suggestions?
What to do with smoked herring?
The consensus seems to be -- just eat 'em (more or less). So I'll give it a try - depending on how tough or salty they are. Anyway, at $2.50 or so a package, no great loss if it doesn't work. Thanx all.
What to do with smoked herring?
My neighborhood Gristedes (!) has packages of "smoked herring", in with the meats and fish. These don't look like anything I'm used to -- not like chubs, or kippered herring. They look like big, dry anchovy filets, 4 or 5 inches long, dark brown and flat, and packed a bunch (?) to a container. I asked the fish guy what to do with them, but he just rolled his eyes and said, "Cook 'em". Thanks a bunch.
So my question: what are they, and what do I do with them? Thanks
Where to get Arenkha?
Arenkha, an imitation caviar, is available in England. But what about here? Does anyone know where I can get a jar?
Bouloud, or Kings Carriage House>
For a highquallity, quiet meal -- which?
On Menupages, the menu for Bouloud confuses me; the menu for Kings Carriage House seems limited (no a la carte?)
Any recommendations?
Need Mexican/Aztec/Chili chocolatec?
I need a place where I can get a hot-chocolate-with-chili. I used to got to a place down around Prince or Houston, West, but I don't remember exactly where - and anyway, it's probably folded by now (sob).
And extra points if I can get a fresh churro to go with it.....
Petrossian for non-Restaurant week?
Any comments on Petrossian for dinner, preferably prix-fixe, for non-restaurant week? (Since RW ended a couple days ago....) Thanx
Peking Duck pancakes in Manhattan Chinatown
Thanks, Lau. Who knows what else I'll eat? As in any new neighborhood, I'll wander around and see what excites my taste buds. Cuy, anybody?
Peking Duck pancakes in Manhattan Chinatown
I rarely get out to Flushing, but for a $1 Peking duck sandwich I'll brave the train trip. So, where on Main Street are these Peking duck sandwiches?

Need a sit-down hot chocolate and coffee spot
There used to be a couple of places where you could get hot chocolate and coffee; reasonable-to-good vibe, but I don't remember where they were. I know a couple of places in the East 70s, uptown, but I need one south of, say, 23 street. Anybody help?
Sofia on West 66, in Hotel Edison, downstairs at Cache -- anyone been?
I've heard there's a music venue in the Hotel Edison -- not the Edison Ballroom -- where, on Monday nights there's Vince Giordano and the Nlghthawks. I think it's called Cache, and is beneath Sofia's restaurant. Has anyone been there? Is there any food to be had, and is it edible? Thanks
Lunch near Daley Center?
I no longer know Chicago -- particularly down in the loop. Still, I gotta take a couple of people to lunch after a visit to the courthouse in Daley Center, or Daley Plaza. Whatever. Anyway, any suggestions within a couple of blocks, for a lunch -- not pizza, however; anything else is probably fine A sit down, tablecloth restaurant., with maybe a glass of wine to ease a little angst? Thanks
What to do with my vodka-infused figs?
I filled a jar with semi-dried figs, and then filled up the jar with vodka; kept it for a week or so, inverting the jar every couple of days. I tasted the liquid, which was delicious. Now that I'm going to decant it (and mix it, half and half, with some ginger syrup I made), what do I do with the figs themselves, and ho;w do I store them? In the fridge, I guess, but for how long? I suppose I could always use the figs as a topping for vanilla ice cream, but is there something more interesting that I could try? Thanx for any help
I need a rotisserie duck
The problem with Zabars dcck is that the duck is cooked and wrapped in advance, so it loses it's crispiness.
I need a rotisserie duck
Up here on the upper west side, you can't walk ten steps or so without falling over a rotisserie chicken, most of which are (at least since the departure of Williams from 85 street) fairly mediocre. But I need a rotisserie duck. Not one from Chinatown (that's another dingus entirely) nor the one cooked at Zabars at 10 in the morning after being marinated all night in something like Italian salad dressing, cut up, wrapped in plastic and served with attitude. Just a nice crispy duck, as served in, years ago, the Duck Joint, or other places.
Anybody help me here?Thanx
Blau Ganz, The Redhead, Black Pearl, New Green Bo...
For some bizarre reason, I decided to spend part of July eating (and d drinking) only in restaurants and bars with a color in their name (as in the title). I know, my wife thinks I'm nuts, butit's not for the first time... Can you add to my list, and make it complete? (and maybe prioritize the selections?) Thanx
What else to do with graham cracker pie crust?
I'm a lazy cook, and I've started using prepared graham cracker pie crusts, instead of making my own. I particularly like the little single-serving size. Anyway, other than my key lime pie, and my Jamaica rum pie (oh, yum) any suggestions for a fruit pie that would go well in a graham cracker crust?
Which Manhattan butcher sells caul fat?
The title says it all. My brother used to mkae hambergers wrapped in caul fat, and I've got a hankering....by the way, what else can I use it for?
What happened to cheap loose garlic?
I usually get mine in the vegetable/fruit market in Chelsea Market; the garlic is good, and almost never do I find any that's started to srpout
