Why can't NY understand the croissant?
i am always disappointed by crossiants. dont even have them anymore because i just get so sad. but - i just tried Tarallucci E Vino's version, and it is spectacular. a must. i still think about it...
Kitchenette on Chambers St - Horrid!!
Went here for brunch recently - we live in Tribeca, and it's an occasional spot for us. After this tome, though, we vowed never again!
Here is what went down: Service was really slow and seemingly clueless - after an eternity we flagged down a busboy to send for our waitress. Finally got our order in, and then the abysmal manager/owner/whoever that obnoxious blonde woman is, came over and barked at us to move tables. My sister and I are both pregnant, so it's not so easy to hop up and move around. We would have been happy to, though, I get it when they need a table to accommodate bigger or smaller parties. (Also, we were right next to the wait station, with a huge, nasty overflowing garbage with dozens of flies clustered around it - moving tables wouldn't have been the worst idea.) So we asked - why do we have to move? And she said 'cuz I need you to!". I said, ok, but it might have been nicer if you just asked. And then she YELLED again that she had already asked me and I was "ignoring" her. Which is just so absurd, my husband was there too, and had been paying attention the whole time because he was trying to get the waiter or anyone to ask for water. So my sister and I hoisted ourselves up to move, and this manager-person kept muttering loudly 'I told them, I told them three times, I told them'. And even the wait staff was kind of embarrassed. Now, of course we were starving, but it had become such a humiliating ordeal that we left. And she was still muttering to herself and to others.
Honestly, the place has been going downhill for a couple of years -there's just bad energy, and the food is only passable. They're supposedly well known for their baked goods, but last time we ordered an eclair it was so hard it made a loud sound when you tapped it on the plate - I'd say at least four few days old. Felt so good to leave for good!!
Western Ireland... foodie destination?
can you stay overnight on the aran islands? are there any small towns that are off the beaten track nearby galway? is glin castle way too over the top?
Western Ireland... foodie destination?
taking my husband to ireland for his 40th at the end of aug/bgn of sep. we are flying into shannon. no plans yet as to where to stay. im worried because we are really food lovers and have relished vacations and food experiences in crete, istanbul, umbria, etc. i am excited about oysters, brown bread, salmon, beer, cheese. but, is western ireland really a chowhounds foodie destination? where should i go, what to stay away from? i loathe touristy spots, as im sure you do, too ;)
New Peruvian Chicken Place in West Village
is it a cute place for a date? or too cas? i can't get a feel for it....
Russian Tea Room
Hey, has anyone been? Gael Greene says its delicious but "expensive + meager" - any additional thoughts? I'd like to take clients there next week....
best turkish restaurant?
wow, i am so surprised by the support for turks & frogs. they're really nice but the food is really not good at all. ali baba is much better. turkish kitchen isn't bad, but its really all about the weekend brunch there. i like uskudar. sip sak is good if you order off the menu, and beyoglu is just gimmicky.
How best to use an any Nobu restaurant gift certificate?
i have to agree with jasmurph - either drink up or ebay it. i was there two weeks ago and have been complaining about it nonstop to anyone who'll listen.
Hoy Wong -- artfully hidden in plain view on Mott Street
hmm, interesting. so what do you think is the best chow in c-town?
a horrible dinner at nobu (tribeca)
been meaning to get to bouley upstairs - great notion, thanks :)

a horrible dinner at nobu (tribeca)
last saturday night, my husband and i had a spontaneous dinner at nobu in our neighborhood. what a disgrace. the sushi was terrible. bad! i complained and asked the waiter if it was just that it was saturday night and all the out of towners were there? how could nobu possibly serve bad fish?? he asked if i had even eaten sushi there and i said we had it at nobu next door all the time. he said that the sushi was much better over there. what?!? the arctic charr was totally overcooked - chewy and dry. service was aloof and distracted. nobu sucks. tataki is terrible too, now, used to be great. is there any decent sushi in tribeca?
Recommendations for Athens, Santorini and Crete
hi - we are in santorini right now and going to crete tomnorrow. thanks for the info, so helpful! in crete, we are spending one night in heraklio, then maybe one night in makala, and three or four nights in chania. i DO love cheese and olive oil... its simply amazing to eat it here at the source.
Recommendations for Athens, Santorini and Crete
hello - i am headed out to athens, santorini and crete this thursday - exact same itinerary, it seems! i was wondering if you had discovered any great chowhound finds to share? thanks :)
Congee Village
hi friends! going to congee village tonight and am so excited! i know my fellow chowhounds are fans, but as i am predicting a vast menu, wondering if there are any suggestions? i like straightforward dishes, not too many ingredients or heavy sauces... thanks :)
has anyone eaten at PEASANT.....on Elizabeth St.
i've loved peasant since it first opened. the razor clams, the bocconcini, whole fish, papardelle with wild boar ragu. and an amazing wine list. the room is modern but romantic, and the food is straightforward but never boring. service has become a bit snooty recently, which is so annoy, but what can you do.
the downstairs is kinda cellar-like - not really a place to dine but fine for snacking. the bar upstairs isnt bad if its not crowded.
Yummy Shawarmy - yucky
what a terrible disappointment :( i had a hankering for a middle eastern "fast food fix" and have been wanting to try Yummy Shawarmy since it opened (a few weeks now?). just awful, from the guy trying to give me cannellini beans and insisting they were fava (!!!) to the oil-soaked eggplant to the stragely-textured dried out chopped chicken. even the topping echoed Subway fixins'. don't go. better - yatagan in soho...
