Anyone knows what's the marinade on the chicken of Dino's in Pico Los Angeles?

now that i thought about it, i concur. i've been going there for over 10 years and i still can't figure out the spice note.

the fries are the best part after they soak up all that juice. similar to greek chicken and fries i used to eat in chicago, but spiked up.

agreed on the vinegar and garlic. i'm not sure on the red either. being a fast food establishment, i wouldn't be surprised if it's something simple like tapatio.

it's gotta be like a greek chicken that's been spiced up. a byzantine/latino thing, which is appropriate for the area.

Ready for Koreatown 201

stews. spicy korean stews with chunks of protein.

i'd start with the most basic and order kimchi jigae. this is stew # 1 in most korean households, and consists of kimchi and bits of meat, usually pork, and is served with rice and some side dishes. pretty much every hole in the wall serves this and should be no more than $10.

if you like this, you probably will like most other korean stews, since many have a similar spice impact but with a different meat/veg combo.

REVIEW w/pics: Seafood Feast at Bultaneun Cheongdamdong Jogae Gui aka Flaming Clam Grill of Cheongdamdong

i've been there twice. my only quibble, and a minor one at that, is that i wish their dipping sauces were a bit varied. of the 3, two are gochujang based and tasted similar. otherwise good place, good shellfish especially the razor clams, and the noodles (kalgooksoo) at the end really hits the spot.

Korean crab place - Olympic at Harvard Ave?

i've had the crab stew there just once and it was very good. the rice mixture thing made with the broth at the end was terrific. i can't remember the details since this was a few months ago, but i was not disappointed at all.

In case anybody works in Mid-Wilshire and craves a double double, the in-n-out truck will be at 3550 wilshire bl. (near kingsley) tomorrow for lunch. the sign that i saw mentioned this being a fundraiser for the march of dimes.

NOT in the San Gabriel Valley-- outrageously good Beijing lamb skewers (yang rou chuan) in.... KOREATOWN! Korean BBQ meets yang rou chuan.... amazing!

to answer wilafur and mr. t:

combo A was $30 - it's meant for two. it's a good deal. they have other combos (B, C, etc.) for bigger groups. i don't remember the prices for the other combos, but it should be about $15 per head. next time i'll probably order a combo and add some more skewers. and booze.

nice find. we had the "combo A" for dinner - ten lamb sticks, an entree, one soju, and spicy noodle soup for two people. totally dig the charcoal almost touching the meat and adding that smoke flavor to the fattiness of the meat. thanks to the lady owner who had the good sense to show me how to eat the skewers. (as in making sure not to touch the hot metal with my mouth.) needless to say, i've never had stuff like this, and i'm extremely happy i tried it out.

Pupusa Trucks in LA?

i haven't eaten there but there's a pupusa truck on 8th st. between hoover and alvarado. i don't know the exact cross street, but it's easy to spot - south side of the street, strip mall parking lot. however, finding a pupusa, truck or not, should be easy in that area, so there you go.

New Pizza Joint in Eagle Rock

i checked out brownstone pizza about 3 weeks ago, which was about a week after they opened. no wall decor, empty pizza rack, virtually deserted. it really looked like they had just opened. anyways, i had a slice of sausage. not homemade sausage, but still reasonably high quality. more important, the crust and the sauce were terrific - dead on. a higher quality of cheese would have been nice, but still good. for those who whine about "no good NY style thin crust in LA", it might be worth checking out.

Park's BBQ v. Honey Pig

park's has better food. try the tokyo x. kudos to genetic engineering.

honey pig really needs a wider selection of panchan. after bite after bite of grilled food, the palate could use a flavor break.

The Verdugo (Bar) in Glassell Park

i didn't get the exact details, but i was told that they have a liquor license issue. it's probably just some sort of a paperwork error from the transfer, but they had to close (for now) last thursday, i think.

Best noodle/ramen place in Koreatown?

don't know if it's the best, but kalgooksoo at myung dong kyo ja (wilshire/harvard) is really good. theirs is beef based, and the rest of the menu is very limited. if you want veggie style, i'd check out madang gooksoo. (western/9th?) they probably do kimchi kalgooksoo and stuff. perfect weather for kalgooksoo today, actually.

Best Korean Banchan in LA?

well, it's been about a year since my last visit, but i like their bossam kimchi a lot. also, i have to put their flavors in context. it's supposedly kaesung style, which is milder. now i'm not of north korean royal stock or anything, but i do think that most korean restaurants overseason. sometimes way too much. so a tad less works for me. to each his/her own, i suppose.

Best Korean Banchan in LA?

i disagree on park's. the meat is stellar, but i recall paying $3 extra for very average kimchi. who pays extra for kimchi in a korean restaurant?

saritgol's sides are a tad too sweet, but they're very good nonetheless. that knee tendon thingy is awesome.

how come no one's mentioned yongsusan yet? cause it's not bbq-centric? they would probably be #1 on my list for panchan.

The York - quick update

i just thought i'd mention it since twice i couldn't find street parking on york bl or ave 51 this week. that part of york bl is turning into a little late night scene, with the york/johnny's/marty's recently opening.

The York - quick update

parking trick - there is a public parking lot on the street just south of york bl. (lincoln ave?) if york bl is jammed, park there, walk through the alley, and turn left. the york (and johnny's) should be a couple of doors down.
