Wild game meat restaurants in Anchorage??

Federal law prohibits the sale of wild game, and this law is strictly enforced in Alaska. Any reindeer you buy in a store or restaurant is farm-raised.

solo birthday dinner in paris - suggestions?

I had a great meal two weeks ago (by myself) at l'Atelier Joel Robuchon. The restaurant offers both small plates and larger-sized portions, and the venue encourages interaction with your neighbors and the staff. They have seasonal specials (asparagus, dover sole the evening I was there), a set tasting menu, and a la carte. There is a nice selection of wines by the glass. The tab for 4 small plates, plus dessert, coffee and 3 glasses of wine was euro 155. They'll pour tap water if you ask for it, and the staff was happy to provide second helpings of the pureed potatoes, which are perfection. All in all, a delicious and fun evening. One quibble: they only take reservations for dinner for the 6:30 pm seating, so you either start early or show up after 9 pm and hope they can seat you.

Need input on my choices for this weekend in Paris

For reasonably priced French comfort food that's also delicious, I'd add Drouant and Au Gourmand, both within walking distance of the Louvre. For dessert, add Jacques Genin, even if you only buy some of his killer caramels.

Vegetarian in Munich... will I starve?

Had a very good vegetarian dinner at Pardi last week; it is a Turkish restaurant with quite a few vegetarian options: www.pardi-restaurant.de Easy access from the city center via U-bahn; closest stop is Rotkreuzplatz.. They have daily specials in addition to their regular menu.

Dinner with appetizer, main course, drinks and shared dessert (awesome baklava) ran 20-25 euros pp. They're also open for breakfast and lunch from 9 a.m.

Menu is in german, but waitstaff speaks some English and is very helpful.

Sunday Dining Options in Rome

Jen, Thanks for responding. I did a search on Sunday dining options in Rome and didn't really find too much. I'm posting in the hopes that someone out there can give me a few recs for Sunday. Normally, I'd take my chances, but the day in question happens to be Valentine's Day, so I'd like a little leadtime, in case I need to make reservations. I'm finding the overwhelming majority of restaurants are closed on Sunday and/or Monday.

Sunday Dining Options in Rome

I'll be in Rome in mid-Feb for a long weekend. It looks like most of the restaurants are closed on Sundays. What are some good places to eat lunch and dinner on Sunday? Looking for good, local food, so I'm interested in everything from a casual meal to something a little more formal.

Clio or Pigalle for Thanksgiving?

We ended up going to Pigalle. To be honest, we were disappointed. We both had the pumpkin tortellini with duck confit for the main course: the tortellini were undercooked on one side and mushy on the other. I was picking little bones out of the confit. The molten chocolate cake was served at room temp--had clearly been prepared in advance and left to sit. The setting was nice; the service ok, but it really seemed like the "A" team had the night off from the kitchen. The tab for two came to $190, so there was no way we were going to spring for leftovers ($17 additional), even if we'd had someplace to store them.

On the plus side, we had great meals at Hamersley's Bistro, Neptune Oyster and O Ya, all of which more than made up for a lackluster Thanksgiving dinner.

Clio or Pigalle for Thanksgiving?

Visiting Boston for the first time for Thanksgiving. I've got dinner res at both Clio and Pigalle. Which should I keep? I don't have to have turkey for dinner, and great food/nice setting is more important than price or cuisine. Any other restaurant I should consider for a great Thanksgiving day dinner?

Dining in Paris with an elderly person -- moderately priced, quiet, no stairs?

Maybe not unreasonable; no doubt it was quite reasonable from the restaurant's POV, but they lost a customer. This is the first time I've been refused a table at any restaurant anywhere in the world specifically because I was by myself, particularly when I'd taken the time to make a reservation well in advance. Compared to other, similarly priced restaurants that I ate at over the long weekend, both the food and the service were sub-par--not worth what I paid for the meal at Willi's.

Dining in Paris with an elderly person -- moderately priced, quiet, no stairs?

I have to say that I had an uncomfortable experience at Willi's Wine Bar last month and would not recommend the place to anyone. I made reservations for a Friday night, solo diner. Even though they had my reservation, the staff would not give me a table, stating that all their tables were for 2+ diners. I ended up eating at the bar--indifferent service and food was poorly prepared, plus everyone coming into the restaurant had to squeeze past me, so I was treated to arguing couples, etc. Clientele seemed to be exclusively English-speaking (I know, this isn't an indication of the quality of a restaurant in Paris, but it this case it argues that Willi's is a tourist trap.). Set menu (3 course) with wine was 49 euro--not worth it, IMO.

2 weeks in Paris, over Christmas with Kids

Drouant, near the Opera, offers Saturday and Sunday brunch, in addition to their other menus; I saw a number of families with young children there. The staff seemed delighted to see them and catered to the kids. I had a very good meal (wild duck pie), and I thought their menu was reasonably priced, with the daily special starting at 17 euro. The restaurant is bookable thru their website.

Anybody know any interesting local places in Estonia?

I ate at Vanaema Juures (Grandmother's Place), at Rataskaevu 10 in Tallinn two years ago, and recommend it, if it's still around. Near the center of the old town, reasonable prices and good, local food, including wild game. They had a vegetarian option on the menu, too.

2 days in Bavaria. What's in season and what's a must have?

Agree with Linguafood: you'll be happy if you stick w/ dishes that use what's in season: besides mushrooms and strawberries, I'm seeing currants, gooseberries and cherries in the markets.

As to what to bring home, you're not too far from wine country; maybe a bottle of ice wine or a burgundy or chardonnay from Bodensee....

Munich - quick trip, quick report!

Another great place to shop or get a bite to eat is on Platzl--everything from Schubeck's shops and restaurant to Hofbrau Haus to Shoya for Japanese, and the haxe place just down the street; all within walking distance of Marienplatz.

Maultaschen are a Schwabisch specialty, to be found in every German restaurant around Stuttgart, but I really haven't seen them on the menus in Munich

Visiting Germany for only a few days (near Munich).. Looking for great beer and lots of it!

Bayreuth is about 150 miles from Munich, but besides the Hofbrau Haus, I really like the beer from the Augustiner brewery. They have a huge restaurant with a beer garden on the Marienplatz. Again, anyone in Munich should be able to point you in the right direction.

Along the Rhine.

In Heidelberg there is a good local brauhaus called Vetter's, right by the old bridge. They brew a pils called Rothaus (Tannen-Zapfel) that is pretty good. Further down, but still in the pedestrian zone is the Schnitzel Haus, which boasts 101 kinds of schnitzel. Your schnitzel comes with pommes frites and a salad: good and reasonably priced, and schnitzel is definitely a German standard!

B-Day in Kaiserslaughtern, Germany

Wartenberger Muehle is 11 km up the A63 from Kaiserslautern. Here is their website: http://www.wartenberger-muehle.de. They have a "dinner for two" special, including wine, for euro 122, on Thursday and Sundays. Otherwise, dinner with wine pairings will run about euro 100 per person.

Kaiserslautern is about 100km from Trier, one of the oldest cities in Germany, located on the Mosel River. Well worth a visit, especially to shop for wine to take home, as the Mosel region is famous for its wines, particularly Rieslings and Eiswein. IAdditionally, the Mosel Wine and Gourmet Festival is going on through the end of April; some special events occurring next week. Website is in German: http://wein-gourmetfestival.de/

We had a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner at Restaurant Coburg in Hotel Palais Coburg, however their website says that the restaurant is closed on holidays, which would certainly include Christmas and maybe Christmas Eve.
