Movin' on up...need fish/produce market and new diner in East 60's

Tried the new WF at 88th and Third. It is awful. I went, admittedly on a Sunday afternoon, but the fish looked old and tired, the produce was very limited and the layout was impossible. The only WF I had been to before was in Portland ME (which is very good), so I was very disappointed.

Anything good near Hotel Wales on UES?

Not a fan of Paola's either. I find the atmosphere very old, stodgy. I think the food is probably fine, just not very interesting.

Returning to a "never again" restaurant (in my case EMP)

so, I am curious. This post has been up for a while. Have you heard anything from EMP?

Mariposa at Deer Valley

I don't get it. I have read rave reviews of this restaurant here and on Zagat and Open Table. I am from Manhattan, so I am not unaware of high prices. I eat at a lot of small plate restaurants, so I am not unfamiliar with the concept. These portions were ridiculous - especially for the prices. The food was fine, some good. But there were 9 orchiettes. The short rib was a tiny portion for $24. Even the tomato/burrata salad was small. We were three people trying to share everything, but there was rarely enough for even a full bite per person. These were absurdly small.

How common is it for Italian restaurants to offer to plate multiple pastas per plate?

Many years ago we had lunch in an amazing restaurant in Montepulciano. My husband had the pasta tasting appetizer and they brought him three separate pastas, but they brought them separately: one after the other.

Birthday girl is turning 40 this month — and I need help!!!

What about Narcissa? They have a lot of vegetarian items and lots of none veggie. Real wine list. Also on Monday nights Dovetail does a veggie tasting menu. I know you wanted the weekend, but if that doesn't work out...

Tapas or other shared small plates on the UWS

We really like Andanada (didn't it get a Michelin star this year?). Have never had service problems. WE also like Bueco 95, but they are very different animals. Andanada is a full fledged restaurant. Bueco 95 is really a wine bar with excellent tapas.

Thanks to all. We ended up at casa fox on orchard (very convenient - it was cold last night). Food was all rifght: typical, good tapas and empanadas, mains less good.

Informal is excellent. Much preferred. I guess I got confused about Black Tree because of the tacos. What type of food is it?

Landmark Movie Theater - 1st Ave and Houston

Most of those restaurants do take reservations, and don't have any. I didn't know Black Tree (wasn't looking for Mexican, ppl we are going with are going to Toloache tonight), but most of those others do take reservations. Same with Somtom Der and Root and Bone noted below. It is a great area for restaurants, I guess the problem is that there are too many people who like good food.
Replying to a later post, it is annoying because if you just want to go to a movie and not plan a month in advance, it can get very difficult to get good food without waiting for hours.

Going to the movies tomorrow afternoon. Looking for somewhere to eat at 7 pm. All of the usual suspects are booked. Any thoughts? Does anyone have any idea how crowded Uncle Boon would be at that hour? And why is it so annoying to try to eat in NYC?

Two Lizards. UES

Has anybody tried this? It gets mostly good reviews on yelp, so I thought I would check it out with CH'ers. If so, how does it compare to Toloache UES?

Los Angeles family staying Midtown East between Christmas and NYE, please advise...

What about Gotham West Market? You could get ramen, tapas, charcuterie. And it's fun to walk around. Maybe not as crowded as Chelsea Market, and IMO much better choices of food.

My family situation/pink pork

I have had the opposite problem. Especially with chicken which people are particularly paranoid about. I have had guest take perfectly good (not pink) chicken and put it back on the grill to totally dry out. One of my relatives does that with salmon. My husband and I usually just let them cook their own meat/fish.
At least with (alleged) undercooked food, the guests can adjust. Once it is overcooked it is ruined. I thought your solution was perfect, but I do get that people are sensitive on the subject. I get annoyed when people question my decisions - they called it cooked through. I call it ruined.

Japanese Craft Beer in NYC

Sushi Seki had an interesting array. I had a Japanese stout which was very good. (Don't remember the name). They had several others I hadn't heard of.I don't know for sure if these are technically "craft beers".

Restaurants to dress up at in New York?

I know it is not Italian, but lots of people dress up at Buddakan and it is a very fun atmosphere.

First female-only wine list launched

I believe the restaurant Annisa in NY had a female only wine list years ago. Then it made some sense, women were not owning restaurants or wineries.

Need a rec for dinner in Tel Aviv

we loved Tzfon Abraxas. The food, the service, all great. We ate at Mizlala the next night and were not at all blown away. Some of the food was good, unfortunately we were there on a Mexican theme week, so that there regular menu was truncated somewhat to make room for a lot of Mexican food.

rice vinegar vs. rice wine vinegar

I am so glad you asked this. I have occasionally found bottles labeled "rice wine vinegar", but mostly only "rice vinegar". And as you note, a lot of recipes call for rice wine vinegar. I had no idea that they are the same. I was in a Japanese food market recently and they did not have rice wine vinegar - had never heard of it. Now I know why. Thank you.

Roast Cauliflower

We just came back from Israel and all over Tel Aviv they serve whole roast cauliflower. We had it several times as a lunch or snack (instead of falafel). Does anyone know how to make this? Do you just oil a cauliflower and throw it in the oven?

A formula for avoiding sitting next to those pesky fellow Yankees who whoop it up and disturb your meal in Paris and finding good food in “secret places.”.

On this theme, we wanted to go to Le Pirouette, based in large part on references here. So, I went to their website and emailed for an 8:30 reservation. I was told they only had 7:30. I took it, but wasn't happy. Then the same thing happened to my cousin. I decided to test a theory. I asked a French colleague of mine to make the reservation (and my cousin asked the hotel to make her reservation) - 8:30, no problem. Apparently they have decided to tackle this problem on their own - don't let Americans eat at a reasonable hour.

Paris Near Mandarin Oriental

I know this is very late, but we did this too. Pirouette and Franck Enee. Both fabulous - probably preferred Franck Enee if only because the dessert, passion fruit souffle was off the charts. I did think in retrospect that they were quite similar. Maybe too similar for two nights in Paris.
