rice vinegar vs. rice wine vinegar

I am so glad you asked this. I have occasionally found bottles labeled "rice wine vinegar", but mostly only "rice vinegar". And as you note, a lot of recipes call for rice wine vinegar. I had no idea that they are the same. I was in a Japanese food market recently and they did not have rice wine vinegar - had never heard of it. Now I know why. Thank you.

Roast Cauliflower

We just came back from Israel and all over Tel Aviv they serve whole roast cauliflower. We had it several times as a lunch or snack (instead of falafel). Does anyone know how to make this? Do you just oil a cauliflower and throw it in the oven?

A formula for avoiding sitting next to those pesky fellow Yankees who whoop it up and disturb your meal in Paris and finding good food in “secret places.”.

On this theme, we wanted to go to Le Pirouette, based in large part on references here. So, I went to their website and emailed for an 8:30 reservation. I was told they only had 7:30. I took it, but wasn't happy. Then the same thing happened to my cousin. I decided to test a theory. I asked a French colleague of mine to make the reservation (and my cousin asked the hotel to make her reservation) - 8:30, no problem. Apparently they have decided to tackle this problem on their own - don't let Americans eat at a reasonable hour.

Paris Near Mandarin Oriental

I know this is very late, but we did this too. Pirouette and Franck Enee. Both fabulous - probably preferred Franck Enee if only because the dessert, passion fruit souffle was off the charts. I did think in retrospect that they were quite similar. Maybe too similar for two nights in Paris.

NYC for 2 dinners, which one would you pick?

I tend to agree with jba256, except that I think he/she was a bit over the top on the Jungsik space and service.I think the "feel" of Annisa is warmer. I liked my servers at Jungsik and love the food, but it is a bit cold. Jungsik food is different from anything else. I have taken people to both restaurants and although they love Jungsik's food, they always want to go back to Annisa. It is the feel.

But I love the fact that Zaab Elee received a star. It seems that every year they pick one inexpensive, non-Michelin seeming, restaurant to show that despite everything, they are "of the people".

Italian Reccomendation for parents

Fair enough. My husband and I are 60+, but we mostly eat in restaurants where the average patron is half our age or less - it is simply where the good food is these days. But sometimes the noise is a bit overwhelming. I love Maialino and Lupa. I think of Maialino as a "fancier" restaurant, whatever that means. I think your parents would probably prefer it.

I think I agree with you Sneakeater that the answer is no. Having a good meal in NY (not a stupendous meal - just good) should be easier than it is.

Italian Reccomendation for parents

This is a common problem. You should define "parents". Although you did help by referring to restaurants that they had liked and not liked, parents can be anywhere from 40's to 90's (and I suppose older). Just saying it would help.

Spontaneity

Is there any way to eat well in Manhattan without either waiting an hour or planning a month in advance? We went to the movies on Friday night - UWS -Bway and 68th. Last minute plan. I thought maybe we would go to Red Farm (1 hour wait) wandered a bit and ended up waiting 15 minutes at Cottage Chinese (Not bad, but definitely not worth the wait). With so many good restaurants in NY, why does it have to be so difficult to just go out to eat?

I think one end or the other: really amazing food, service, etc high end price or really good funky ethnic, low end price. It is the middle that is not worth it.

I think you are probably right - if by "fairly recent" you mean about ten years or so. I am pretty sure I have been using it at least that long. And, I like the idea of calling it "brown"

when people say "balsamic" do they mean only red balsamic? I am not too fond of red balsamic, but I love white balsamic in a vinaigrette, although I only use red for tomato mozzarella salad. Something about drizzling to me requires red balsamic. I have found that many good cooks do not know about white balsamic

Thinking chimichurri, but definitely wouldn't sauce until I am ready to serve. Just trying to avoid having to do a lot of cooking (I know searing tuna is not a lot - but there are a lot of pple) during the meal.

I want to serve seared tuna for a dinner party. I want to cook it slightly in advance (an hour or two) and then serve it at room temp. Will the fish go bad sitting on the counter for an hour after being seared?

Gotham/Gramercy Tavern/Annisa/Union Square cafe - which one this time?

I don't know why no one is responding regarding Annisa which is my favorite of all of them. I don't know why OP finds it intimidating. I think the servers are great - and usually you can chat with Anita Lo herself. As to portion size, I am not a very big eater, but I have taken many people (including large men) here and no one has complained. I think it is the most interesting of the restaurants you have mentioned.

Interesting. I have been to both now and I am curious as to why you say this. We have always shared at Zabb Elee without problems. Menu at ZE is much bigger, more choices, although I don't necessarily think that is a good thing. Loved Somtum Der and I think the atmosphere is a little nicer.

New job at 48th and Madison

have to give a shout out to brick lane curry. we had a group on and a reservation at the 52nd st branch. arrived and they had an emergency shut down. they called the 93rd st branch to honor our groupon and gave us a credit for the cab fare to get there. Could not have been nicer, really went the extra yard.
