I know others who agree with you - definitely an opinion issue. we were also a large group - love the dan dan noodles. Have not tried Lan Sheng. Next on my list.

La vie en Szechuan for my money is better than SG.

New (since Fall '13) finer dining UES?

Must say I didn't love eastside salumeria rosi. Food was ok, not great for the price, and i thought it was overly formal. Trying too hard to be Madison Ave.

UES Ramen with kids

I want to take my grandsons (ages almost 6 and 8) for ramen on the UES. or East Harlem. Noodles seems like such an obvious choice for children. Any recommendations? It would be particularly fun if they could watch the noodles being made. I have read about Naruto Ramen on Third, but it is very small and there would be six of us.

Touristy Spots Worth Visiting

Does she watch any of the food shows? She may feel that restaurants owned by Iron Chefs or Chopped judges are touristy, and some of them are quite good.

French restaurants

Totally agree. If you read the menu, it looks like an ordinary French restaurant. It is what they do with the food that makes it so interesting.

near the Javits Center

Maybe you should try Gotham West Market. It is 10 blocks north of you and they have some interesting, inexpensive food. Otherwise, I have eaten at Cookshop which is 10th Ave and 19th - even further.

Asian dinner for 6, 20-somethings in Manhattan/Brooklyn

I like the food at Larb Ubol a lot - especially good for all of the W 42nd Street theaters. I don't think of it as being at all buzzy. Am i going too early (mostly pre-theater)?

in response to foodwhisperer, I was very disappointed in Kittichai. The food had no particular kick. I am always amazed that the food at Buddakan is as good as it is for a place like that. Comparing Buddakan and Pig and Khao seems odd - very apples and oranges.

yes - as a special, but I suspect it is a special everyday.

Lunch at Ma Peche

Has anyone been to lunch at Ma Peche lately? I loved the old menu and i was very excited about the new concept. Although many of the dishes that we tried were very good, I found the experience exasperating. The restaurant was fairly full and it took a very long time for the hot cart to come by. I ended up ordering a special main dish (noodles with lamb which was phenomenal) because I wasn't sure I had time to have a full meal otherwise. And this was no quick lunch - we were there for over an hour and a half. I also found many of the dishes too precious. A little dish of razor clam ceviche - very good, but so tiny.

Very old topics recently?

I think this answers my question. Does Kathryn in NY work for CH? Are "mods" moderators? Are there mods for every board? I read CH pretty regularly and post occasionally, but Kathryn is always the first one on and usually asking the same questions to focus the OP.

Best Grilled Cheese sandwich

Earls Beer & Cheese - Park and 97th Street. Easier to get in at lunch, but the grilled cheese is fabulous. Different types of cheese, bread. And of course there is the beer.

+1 for Rouge et Blanc.

Pearl and Ash - Alder - Estela

Food at Pearl and Ash was excellent. The atmosphere is a bit zooy and we felt that they rushed us a bit too much, but i would go back.

South African

Kaia wine bar on Third in the low 90's. Good wine, food, etc. Great South African owners/staff.

Solo dining/bar tasting menus

how about something really different pre-theatre: sake bar haji? glass of sake and some light food.

List of restaurants in NYC--which should we try?

I think the food and Pearl and Ash is fabulous - but it is a totally different kind of experience from the others on your list. what about Marc Forgione?

I was entertained by how this posting got hijacked into a Batali fest. Interesting. We ended up at Osteria Morini and had a great time. thanks to all for your contributions.

I don't know how you can recommend Ippudo or Danji for pre-theater when they don't take reservations and have notoriously long waits.

Brunch suggestion in NY theater district

depends on where your theater is. We liked brunch at 44-1/2 on Tenth Ave btw 44/45.

Brunch in UES with teenager

Maybe Red Rooster? Don't know what the wait is like at 11 or 12, but it is fun. (yes, i know it isn't technically UES, but close enough).

10 days in NYC - itinerary feedback please

Second Andanada for LC night. Most people don't think about it. We were just there on Sat. The food is great, although I must say the service was only so so. Agree with the Fatty Cue or Crab and Pearl and Ash.
Maybe Toloache downtown is better, but I think the one in the theater district is too crowded and not as good anymore.

The OP has quite a range. Could try Larb Ubol - 38th and 9th Ave.

Thanks sgordon. The point is to do something a little less fancy - less white table cloths. More funk. that is why I came up with the restaurants I mentioned.

Dinner party ideas?

don't know why this is on the Manhattan board instead of home cooking, but I always have this problem. I tend to do stews: sometimes Asian, sometimes seafood/fish, sometimes lamb. So much easier to serve. You do some sort of fabulous creative salad to start and you are there. Other possibility is short ribs, but they can be a little heavy.
