Butcher for prime rib?
Thanks so much for these suggestions! It's great to know that savenor's is open on sundays. And I have yet to use the butcher shop as an actual butcher - always forget! I actually forgot to check chowhound for responses yesterday morning and ended up going to whole foods in BH. They cut a 5 lb prime roast for me on the spot. Extremely marbled - meat was fantastic. $16.99/lb. It felt pricey for bone-in, but it was worth it.
Butcher for prime rib?
Boston hounds that cook - I need your help for a dinner tomorrow night (sunday night). Am looking for a butcher that is open on Sunday that sells a great prime rib in the boston area. Specifically, I need something with the bone in at the end - an end cut. Forgot my neighbor's birthday, and would like to do something special for her tomorrow night. The end cut is her favorite.
New Greek Restaurant in Back Bay?
Will definitely check the eastie mexican places you're talking about during the week. Thx for mentioning them. Is there anything new and interesting in the city that you would recommend for tonight? Loved your reviews of O Ya.
New Greek Restaurant in Back Bay?
Thanks for your post...escargot, ostrich and the caprese salad on their menu makes me want to wait to see how the reviews are before trying. Odd menu.
New Greek Restaurant in Back Bay?
That's it! Thanks so much. Have you been there? There are no reviews posted, but it looks like it's open.
New Greek Restaurant in Back Bay?
What is the name of the new Greek restaurant in Back Bay? Just opened...if I remember correctly, it's on Boylston. Would also love any feedback - wondering especially if they have barbounia, whole fish, and a good taramasolata (my sic. if that last one is spelled incorrectly). Thanks - am having trouble googling to find the location, address, anything without the resto's name.
Green Street
We didn't say anything to the house - it was a great experience there otherwise... didn't want to complain our fun away. But the night is over, so now I passively post. Definitely go see the sideshow mussels for yourself - just keep the closed ones on the side like we did, and remember to cut them in half like I didn't before making a huge gloopy mess of my chin with my first one :)
Green Street
We decided to try the new-ish Green Street incarnation before a show last night....big disappointment in terms of dining, but we loved our cocktails, the service and the neighborhood-vibe there. Food was mediocre at best - we started with the mussels cooked with anise or pernod cream. Sauce was pretty good with the grilled bread served alongside as a dipper, but the mussels were awkwardly gargantuan. Mussels on steroids we called them- bigger than a mouthful and just not very good. A third of them were barely open, unedible. My SO's duck breast entree completely lacked flavor, was served very rare and very cold. He did enjoy the roasted potatoes it came with, though. My skate entree was pretty uninspired, extremely salty and served with two pieces of barely cooked fried calamari. Did love the pea tendril salad served alongside the skate - would definitely order it next time as a starter, as we'll certainly be back for drinks. Bartending was outstanding as was the service in general.
Delivery in Southie
I'm sad to hear that about Shanti - I've never had a problem with delivery to South Boston from there. It's yummy. Try Bejing on the Common (cash only) for good Chinese delivery, Billy Tse will deliver sometimes (I call to check first before getting my hopes up!), and Amsterdam Cafe for a great sandwich selection, delivery or takeout. Also, Cafe Portobella has good Italian-style pizza (takeout only).
Unique Brunch/Lunch Shower Options on a Sat?
These are all great suggestions! I'm looking into all of them. Thanks so much!
Unique Brunch/Lunch Shower Options on a Sat?
Hosting a baby shower on a Sat. in April for my very best friend for 20 years! Would love ideas...I'm thinking about cute restos in the south end or perhaps cambridge that might not be open for lunch on sat, but would be happy to open for a party of 20-25. Function rooms at fun, cute restaurants (that are open on Sat) would be great, too. She's a fun, foodie, mom-to-be. The Zebra Room at Upstairs on the Square was my first choice, but it's booked that day. Would love suggestions for something with a similar feel and great food so that she can have a fantastic party.
Suuthie recommendations?
These are all great recommendations. Also, My Diner on A Street has amazing breakfast. Brunch at The Playwright is good, too.
dbar in Dorchester
Had an amazing dinner there last night - you should definitely try it. Here's my take:
Great atmosphere. Service was excellent (our waiter was pretty hilarious, actually), but not overpresent or hovering, which I think is perfect. Fantastic cocktail list - the ubiquitous pomegranate martini was there (and it was great!), but there were also quite a few more complex and infused choices. 3 of our party of 4 started with the tuna ceviche. Cubes of tender tuna and cucumber with a not too limey marinade, interesting. Served with parnsip chips - these were wonderful. A perfect appetizer. Our 4th had the tenderloin tacos, which he raved about but didn't share. But he made up for that by sharing some of his truffled mac and cheese entree. This was an outstanding dish speckled with black truffles and topped with fresh garlic bread crumbs. I'd go as far as to say that this is the best mac-and-cheese in the city. For dinner, one had steak frites- just lovely. The fries were wonderful and light, and the steak was seasoned beautifully. I had the lamb steak with couscous tagine. Everything about this dish was wonderful, including the fact that there was so much that I'll be eating the leftovers for lunch! The wine list is diverse and priced well. We had an excellent bottle of bordeaux with dinner, that was $35-ish. Entrees are all priced under $20, appetizers are less than $15. Yes, I'll be back, and it may very well be this week!
Mutton and Goat
Shanti in Dorchester also serves most of their entrees with a choice of goat, beef or chicken.
Lawrence Bahn Mi Shop Closed
When I tried to stop in a couple of weeks ago for a sandwich at lunchtime, the metal doors were pulled down with a sign saying "Business for Sale".
How is Lucy's Kitchen on L Street in Southie?
It looks like a comfort food take-out place; chalkboard of specials in window, etc.
Is it worth a stop on the way home?
Hamersley's, Via Matta or Mistral
Those are all solid 'client-dinner' choices. All consistent in terms of great food. With Hammersley's you'll have an excellent dinner with wonderful service--it's a great representation of why the south end became a dining locale. The servers are knowlegeable and seem to have been there forever, which is a fantastic thing.
Mistral has an impressive room with excellent food. Tenderloin pizza, tuna tartare and fois gras with duck confit are consistent and fantastic. But that said, in terms of the Hammerley's and Mistral experience, the client can have in NYC at loads of places.
Via Matta, on the other hand, with its somewhat enclosed patio, is my fave for summer on a nice night, and the food is amazing. The space inside is great as well, but nothing beats their patio right now. Lots of innovative Italian menu choices, excellent wine list and the sommelier is wonderful...although of all things on the menu, I love the chicken under a brick (okay, not innovative, but delicious). Servers are excellent as well. Best dinner in the city during the summer, hands down. hope this helps :)
In search of the ULTIMATE Lobsta Roll
At Yankee Lobster this past Sunday, I found...$14.95 for the lobster roll, fries and cole slaw. The roll was a lightly toasted hotdog bun that traveled well in styrofoam take-out box. The salad was medium-sized chunks of lobster held together with just enough mayo so that it wasn't a drippy mess (about 1/4 pound of lobster meat in each sandwich, they said). Little to no seasoning in the lobster salad, so I added some Frank's at home for a salty and hot kick. It would have been delicious without it, but I was at home, and I had it right there, soo...
Served with fries and cole slaw. Cole slaw was crunchy and not too sweet(which translates as "great" to me); also came with huge portion of fries that were good, not great, but definitely fried in fresh oil (hate when fish places don't change their oil often enough and use same fryolator for fish and fries..yuck).
I also noticed that littlenecks and oysters on the half-shell (you can eat-in there) were $1.50/per, but I'll have to try them and the other fishmonger wares there another time. Indoor dining room was simple, and 3/4 packed on a sunny Sunday at noon. Absolutely a place to experience a barebones, seaport-flavored taste of Boston.
Waltham--different, but fun for an 11 year-old
New Mother India followed by a cannoli at Domenic's for dessert will be perfect for us. Thanks!
Waltham--different, but fun for an 11 year-old
Tapas would be great, as would Indian. Thanks!
Waltham--different, but fun for an 11 year-old
I'm finding lots of dated stuff when I search, so I'm posting because I know that there is a ton of fantastic food in Waltham...
I'm having lunch with my "little" (the big brother big sister organization) on Sat. because her mom has to spend the day in Waltham, and it's my turn to pick a lunch place. Anything ethnic would be especially great, as we mostly eat at chain restaurants. I loved them when I was a kid, too, but having someone show me that there was something else to eat out there made me the hound that I am today, so I'd love suggestions!
Pan Asia and Amsterdam Cafe in Southie
I found this board doing a search for Southie, where I've lived for a year and love, so I thought I'd tell you about my fave places for delivery because it's tough around here unless you're looking for Greek pizza-esque food or bad Chinese.
Amsterdam Cafe is a gem for anyone who appreciates the Angora Cafe or any of it's multiple outposts. When I was in there last to pick up a yummy pita wrap and asked about the similarities, I was told that one of the owners of Angora started opening up different locations, with similar menus. He gets them up and running and then sell after a couple of months. I'm not sure if it's a franchise or just a purchased spin-off, but the food is fresh and so welcome.
Addy: 483 East Broadway, 617-464-6488. Here's a link to Angora's menu to give you an idea. They deliver, too.

Next on the list is Pan Asia. I've been there to eat-in only once. The room was redone recently. It's cute, but I mostly get sushi delivery. In Southie! It puts Teriyaki House to shame in the sushi dept. While it is technically Asian fusion, the Pad Thai was terrible, and thus I haven't tried any the Thai curries, but I probably should... However, some of the Chinese dishes pretty good, especially the chicken with garlic sauce. When you order, remember that this isn't a place to get fancy, just a solid place that delivers. I bet the Kung Pao is good, etc.
But back to the sushi. The fish is fresh and tasty enough that I order maki least once a week. They do well with some of the designer rolls like the red sox maki, celtic maki, and shrimp tempura (with a drizzle of the spicy mayo that has become so popular). I also like the eel maki variations. Spicy tuna and hamachi are passable, but I skip them--they would almost be better if the fish and mayo stuff was pureed, which I usually hate. And I don't order sushi or sashimi. The saba and ikura just weren't fresh enough for my taste, for example.
On a whole, Pan Asia is on a similar par with Shino/Sushi express... a place where you don't necessarily want to order the things not in constant rotation, but still solid. And they deliver, which may be why I love them so much!
