Walter's Hot Dogs in Larchmont (Westchester Co.) has reopened!

Wow. I put this up for informational purposes and never imagined I'd get so many heated responses.

Walter's dogs have a milder flavor than others, which may not be to everyone's taste. But since they have been around for 95 years, there are obviously many people that do like them.

Walter's Hot Dogs in Larchmont (Westchester Co.) has reopened!

The landmark hot dog stand (since 1919, 1928 at this location) was closed for longer than expected for some renovations. Looks like they are back in full swing today.

Here is the story from the LoHud website:

Thanksgiving in Manhattan

Macy's is normally closed on Thanksgiving day, so that would probably not work. (Unless they do open at 8pm like they did this year Ugh)

Another Braising & Browning Question

Exactly... very quick sear just to get a little fond in the pot. OP, If your browned meat sears are tough then you are likely browning it for too long at too high a temp.

When food is wrongly named....

Egg creams do not contain egg or cream.

If your drink consists of raspberry vodka, chocolate syrup and mint, then it is NOT a martini.

While it's probably OK, if you are serving it to guests then making a new batch for Sunday would be best.

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - April 2014 [OLD]

Has anyone else tried the Chocolate Ganache Danish ring? It's my new favorite pastry from TJ, edging out the chocolate torte. It's in the fresh bakery section, near the bread.

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - April 2014 [OLD]

We love that sweet chili sauce too. Tastes pretty good with the tofu edamame nuggets. It has just the right amount of spice for me, but DH adds a few drops of sriracha.

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - April 2014 [OLD]

I've purchased a few nice plants at TJs (tulips, kalanchoe, hyacinths) in addition to the cut daffodils over the past few months. They really made my kitchen feel like spring, especially after all the snow we had up here this past winter.

Egg entrees for egg haters?

If your husband has a sweet tooth, I suggest the 2nd Ave Deli noodle kugel recipe. It uses eggs but no dairy since it is formulated to be pareve.
I've made it a few times and really like it.
It contains noodles, eggs, sugar, canned pineapple, raisins, a little lemon juice, pinch of salt. I tried to Google the exact recipe to no avail, but here is a link to the book on Amazon.

why so confusing to pay @ katz deli

If you opt for counter service and dine in, you can still pay with a CC at the back counter. They will give you a receipt with your ticket to show on the way out.

why so confusing to pay @ katz deli

I think it's a holdover from an earlier time. I remember going to a cafeteria-style place somewhere in Queens when I was a kid and it was very much the same. My grandpa seemed quite comfortable with the ticket process so I assume it was much more commonplace in the past.

Black and White Cookie with *dark* chocolate fondant?

I don't know if they use dark chocolate or not, but the chocolate side of the black and white at Zaro's is less sweet than others I've had (such as Junior's). Is that what you are going for?

Zaro's has a couple of locations in Grand Central Terminal.

Central Avenue Updates - Scarsdale/White Plains

I happened to be in the area of the future Ben's this past weekend and construction is well underway.
Looks like the back half of the existing building was taken down and the front part stripped pretty clean. I can't imagine it being ready to open soon.

I usually flip mine over once at the 2 hour mark. I wouldn't check it every half hour.

kossar's

I was there last Sunday and the bagels and bialys are as good as they ever were.

I hadn't heard about the change in ownership, but I didn't notice that they tasted different. They were really very good.

Can i use unpeeled potatoes for latkes?

Yes. Scrub them and just cut out any eyes or green spots. Then cut into large chunks and shred.

Passover brisket: Joan Nathan's Mothers or "My Favorite?" Input please!

I've made the 2nd Ave Deli recipe a few times and it has been delicious. I use a flat cut brisket and slice the onions instead of chop them.

http://www.tastebook.com/recipes/1802...

I've also made it successfully in a 275-300F oven instead of on the stovetop (after the initial browning). In fact, I think I like it better that way.

Additionally, the amount of spice mixture you make based on the recipe is way more than you need. I used maybe a quarter of it the first time I made the recipe and it was fine. If I had used all of it for a 4 pound brisket it would have been too spicy (from the paprika)

Have you ever made Croissants?

A bit of hyperbole.... I realize that they are not easy to make and would rather pay a skilled baker to make them than do it myself.

I made croissants once. Now, I will gladly pay $20 a piece for them at a good pastry shop---they are exhausting!

That thread doesn't address how "kosher" it is. Here is a link to the 2nd Ave Deli's site that explains its Certification:

"BULK" cooking?? Whatcha cooking today or this weekend?

I picked up a lovely brisket yesterday. It's sitting in the fridge now covered with spices--I use the 2nd Ave Deli Cookbook recipe--and I will start cooking it a little later this morning.

Also have a rather large sweet potato (about the size of 2 grapefruits) that I'll cut up and roast along with some carrots. This should keep everyone well fed for a few days.

Too-dark chocolate transformation?

I have successfully subbed 80-85% dark chocolate for unsweetened chocolate in recipes where the chocolate needs to be melted, such as brownies or chocolate cake. I didn't adjust the sugar at all and everything turned out fine.
I would suggest using it up in this way--it seems like an awful lot of work to melt, sweeten, and temper, and I don't know if it would even work.

The problem with Chowhound

It's all about context. If a poster I was familiar with posted just a link then I might not think anything of it, except oh cool what I needed! But if I was a new poster I might not know how to react.

I have read many of your posts and I don't think you have anything to worry about :)

The problem with Chowhound

I took a minute to read a few of the threads you posted and on several of them you got some very good responses.

Suggesting that someone read past posts is hardly a waste of time---many people (including myself) find it helpful to see the names of places that come up often and who is asking/recommending these places. Often, new posters will simple ask for "the best" or "can't miss" places, which, in a large city like NYC or LA, can be a very hard question to answer.

Posting nothing but links to past threads does come across as a bit rude... I include some context in those that I post links to, such as whether the posts are recent, have a particular piece of info that's relevant, or maybe just because they are generally informative.

If you see these as problems, well, I don't know what to tell you.
