Hong Kong / Guangzhou: Hot Pot / Steamboat

Thanks. It's kind of hard to do it at home when home is a 10+ hour flight away ;)

I still can't quite figure out why the guy insists on hot pot though ...

Hong Kong / Guangzhou: Hot Pot / Steamboat

I gather Tao Heng from searching old threads.

I can speak mandarin and cantonese, read a little of simplfied chinese and even less traditional chinese. But the others in my group read and speak mandarin fluently.

Our dining plans are not fixed yet, but someone in our group insists on at least one hot pot meal. HK or GZ is fine. We have friends of friends living in both cities, so some meals are pre-planned for us. I am still not sure if we will have time to explore on our own.

Hong Kong / Guangzhou: Hot Pot / Steamboat

Hi all,

Vancouver 'hound stopping by HK/Guangzhou. Someone in my group insists on having hot pot / steamboat for at least a meal.

Browsing through the board, I came across:

HK
1. Tung Lai Shun - Royal Garden Hotel in Tsim Sai Tsui
2. Firewell - Whitty Road, Sheung Wan

GuangZhou
Tao Heng in Landmark Hotel

Are the above real hotpot restaurants or do they just serve some hot pot dishes?

It will be great if there are something different from the usual hotpot (eg HKYK in Richmond, BC). I heard about some porridge-based ones. Any others?

We do not really care about price or ambiance, meaning it could be high-end or low-end. We are willing to travel as well. We should be staying near Jordan MTR. Still desperately looking for hotel in GuangZhou.

King crab-good deals?? YVR

I was in Chinatown yesterday and saw King Crab for $12.99. This is the store on Gore near Keefer.

Mid to low-priced Thai in Vancouver, BC

Anybody tried Thai Spice Restaurant at the former Star Anise (1485 W 12th Ave) location? It is owned and operated by a couple of former Khai Thai staff.

Laksa in Western Canada

Update. Prima Taste and Orchid Delight are closed.

There was a notice on the door at Prima Taste saying they will re-open in mid-Jan. It was then changed to late Jan, and now, nothing. I called the restaurant and there was a message saying they are closed for good.

I guess it is back to Ellie's and Banana Leaf for now.

BTW, dinehere.ca listed a Cafe D'lite express in Aberdeen food court. Anybody tried it yet?

Best options for Chinese New Year 2009?

Thanks Mick. So is a double 2 oz in the states? I'm from Vancouver and we have some draconian laws on serving alcohol here. BTW, I'm back in Vancouver.

Best options for Chinese New Year 2009?

Do I create a new thread for report?

Anyways, we were headed towards Great Eastern only to face a road block due to the New Year celebrations. Along the detour, we came across R&G and street parking and that's where we ended up.

It was 8 pm and there was a queue. The hostess told us 45 minutes, but we were seated in 20.

I had a double stoli at the bar while waiting. The bartender poured straight from the bottle without measuring! I am sure it was at least a triple in Vancouver! Is this the norm in SF?

On to food. We ordered 1/2 a peking duck (came highly recommended from the lady next to me at the bar), a steamed sea bass, lobster, a pork dish and a beef dish.

Peking Duck - looked and tasted more like de-skinned roast duck. The skin was not crispy enough
Sea Bass - Overcooked
Lobster - Pretty good
Beef - Too sweet. At least the beef was not soaked in baking soda like in Vancouver.
Pork - Too sweet.

Overall, a pretty decent meal because we were forewarned by yimster and chandavkl. Total came to $158 before tips.

Actually, this was one of our better meals in SF this time round. Our other meals being: 3 times at Japan Town, 3 times around our hotel in the Sutter/Hyde area, Cheesecake Factory, McDonalds in Gilroy, a grab-and-go sandwich at Sausalito and a late night meal in San Mateo. Owing to the tasks at hand, convenience was the major consideration for the above choices. However, reunion dinners are special, and I appreciate the recs.

Hopefully, my next trip to SF will be more chowhound-worthy.

Best options for Chinese New Year 2009?

Hi all, Vancouver hound here on an unplanned stop in town.

I'm staying at Sutter/Hyde area with a car. Looking for a Chinese New Year reunion meal Sunday night. New Year-esque food not important, but good chinese is. No preference for specific regional chinese. Prefer to be in city area. Considering it is a reunion dinner, cost isn't much of an issue.

If you are familiar with Vancouver, I am looking for Sea Harbor/Sun Sui Wah quality. Considering the party size, it will be a bonus if there is something similar to Hakasan (tasting menu with nice plating work).

I found the following after a quick search on the board:
1. R&G
2. Great Eastern
3. Koi Palace (except it is not in the city)
4. Kirin (any relation to the chain in Vancouver?)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

ALPHA SUSHI

It's actually books on aliens. One of my friends remarked that he read the whole series!

ALPHA SUSHI

That's the menu behind the beer with tomato juice!

ALPHA SUSHI

Alpha Global Sushi at Richards and Helmcken in downtown Vancouver?

I like it there better than the other izakayas because it is more intimate, less chaotic and usually no wait for tables.

Seared pepper tuna, the korokkes and the rolls with mango and eel are the usual items I order. I've brought many friends/guests there and have yet to have anyone not like it.

Oh yeah, they have very interesting menus.

Where did you have the best buffet ever?

We are not limited to Western Canada, right?

Fullerton Hotel, Singapore, Sunday brunch. Free flow of Moet Chandon champagne included.

Vancouver: Where to get soft shell crab?

I had a delicious soft shell crab as an appy earlier this evening. It looked pretty easy to recreate at home, but I do not remember seeing fresh softshell crabs in any of the supermarkets, Chinatown or T&T.

Anybody knows where I can get them?

Where to get a great hot dog in Vancouver

Just had lunch Japadog. Considering the rain and coldness, they are doing very well!

Vancouver - Chinese Restaurant Award

Err ... Mui Garden as best Cantonese restaurant?

Bad News: Aurora Bistro is closed (Vancouver)

Lasting 5 years is an achievement? Let's hope the economic downturn do not forces the closure of more restaurants.

Bad News: Aurora Bistro is closed (Vancouver)

When will it be closed and what's the reason?

Surrey in December...

Under the reply box, there is a "Link to a place" tab. You can search for the restaurants and add a link.

Thanks! New places to check out next time I'm in Surrey! And then there's that new Malaysian place in Fraser Heights.

Surrey in December...

I do not remember any Marriot in Surrey.

Surprisingly, I do not usually eat Indian when I am in Surrey. Anyways, Asian Spice (Chinese-Indian) and Mahek would be my pick.

If you like Pho, consider Pho Tam and Pho Tau Bay.

Surrey in December...

I will go with Hanako in the Guildford area, Tokachi in the Whalley area or Tawara in the Newton/Panorama area.

Surrey is pretty big, and surprisingly, have a few good sushi places.

Can't find the link for Hanako. It is in a strip mall (same mall as Wendy's) off 152 St in Guildford.

Vancouver - Does all the ramen taste the same?

I suppose your question is akin to a Japanese asking "does all fried rice taste the same?".

I am no ramen expert. I like my soup rich and noodles al dente. Good char siu is a bonus and I like them fat. With the above criteria, my first choice for ramen will be Kintaro, followed by Menya (you get 3 lean and 3 fatty char siu), Motomachi (my favorite for char siu amongst the lot) and Benkei.

I prefer to look at value over price. Motomachi cost a little more, but they use organic products. I do not mind the additional cost.

Also, remember there's a difference between authentic and tasty.

Vancouver - Chinese Restaurant Award

Well, this is their first year and yet they managed to get some pretty good sponsors (like Tourism Vancouver). Let's hope the award is successful and we get better representations of regional cuisines in the subsequent years.

Vancouver - Chinese Restaurant Award

I was reading Gill's review of Salam Bombay (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081029.wldish29/BNStory/lifeFoodWine/home) today and came across this award
http://chineserestaurantawards.com/index.php.

There are 2 parts to the award - Critics Choice and Diner's Choice. The critics will vote on 25 signature dishes while diners will vote in 8 categories.

This award looks promising! My only reservation is that the panel of judges are mainly from Hong Kong.

Downtown Vancouver on this Sunday

Your best bets will be the Asian restaurants. The izakayas and Jang Mo Jib at Robson/Denman, Azia and Sala Thai at Burrard/Smithe, Prima Taste at Robson/Seymour. If you are willing to travel a little, Phnom Pehn in Chinatown. I am not sure if any of them are open. It is best to call them before you go. Of course, every restaurant in Richmond will be packed ;)

Good chow near Ikea, Richmond (BC)?

How about that Korean restaurant mentioned by another hound? I believe it is along Bridgeport in the same mall as Lazy Boy.

Indonesian grocery stores in Metro Vancouver?

Exactly what are you looking for?

I go to Hen Long in Surrey every few months. If you are ever in that area, give it a try. They have quite an extensive list of things south east asian.

Opening? Menya Japanese Noodles, Vancouver

It started with the BBQ pork. It used to be fatty and tender. The last 2 times I visited, it turned out lean and chewy. The soup was not as flavorful as I remembered as well.

I stopped by Menya yesterday around 2:30 pm and they were closed for the afternoon. I will try to make another trip tomorrow. BTW, I saw lots of flowers with Japanese recipients. So the operators should be Japanese!
