Seeking SF recommendations, esp for ethnic food

Lavash serves Persian food in a pleasant setting at 511 Irving St. It's very affordable too.

Any quince at Alemany Farmers' Market?

Yes I saw some at Alemany on Saturday. The quince were at the "citrus" stall adjacent to the central passage on the south side. $2 a pound if I recall.

I remember dogs tied up outside the circle of trucks at Ft Mason, but I don't recall any in food lines.

Off The Grid is happening tonight from 5-9 at Fort Mason.

Little Yangon, Authentic Burmese in Daly City

I ordered the chicken biryani recently. It was enough for two people and delicious. All the whole spices used in it's preparation were evident; cardamon pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaves. Yummy...I'll be going back.

Food Festivals? [2010]

The Armenian Food Festival at the church on Brotherhood Way in San Francisco is September 10-12. Those ladies sure cook some good stuff.

Memories of Kirin

Back in the 80's, we always ordered the Mongolian beef. I should go back to see if it is still as good I remember it.

Mexican restaurants with fresh tortillas

La Perla, 224 Lux in South San Francisco has fresh flour tortillas.

Xiao Long Bao Kitchen

Passed by there last weekend but had already eaten. This new Chinese restaurant is at 331 Grand in SSF. They have a large menu with lots of spicy dishes like hot chili oil soup and home made steamed pork bacon with spicy flour (?). Also Shanghai sizzling rice soup, an XL Xiao Long Bao, pan fried pumpkin cake, Sounds interesting. Open M-F, 11-3, and 5-9. S,S 10-3 and 5-9

pannetone

Are there any bakeries producing pannetone in San Francisco? I love this lighter alternative to fruit cake.

Sunny Shanghai for great xlb's in San Bruno

Went there about 11:30 on saturday for lunch and they were closed.

Mussels like in restaurants - where to buy?

I believe after October 1, the local quarantine expires and you can go pry mussels from the rocks along the coast. Check for low tides down around the Pescadero area.

Zinfandels at Trader Joe's

If you should come across Rosenblum Paso Robles 2007, you should try it.

pH test strips to measure range of pH 3 to 6?

I have about 100 strips that measure pH 0-6 in 0.5 increments that I could give you. cjones8434@sbcglobal.net.

fresh mangosteens

Saw some in SF Chinatown last week, on Stockton, somewhere between Pacific and Washington.

Alemany Market Food vendors?

The food vending was moved to the south side of the market this past weekend. I don't know if that will be a permanent location.

Fresh rambutan anywhere?

One vendor sells them at the Alemany farmer's market for $7 per pound.

Where to get fresh anchovy, mackerel or sardines?

The Chronicle fishing report indicates someone is selling fresh sardines at the Berkeley marina. see http://www.sfgate.com/outdoors/fishing/

Volcano Curry

You can email me to get a pdf of their small menu.

Volcano Curry

Ate there recently and would go back again. The prices are cheap because it is a no frills establishment with paper plates and plasticware. Chicken curry was $5.95. The portion was large and filling and topped with a couple kinds of pickled vegetables. I also ordered a croquette and grilled eggplant (very good) for $1 apiece extra. Other extras are available. They have mild, hot and volcano intensities...I tried the hot and it was medium to my taste. Several years ago I ate at the Curry House down near LA which was better Japanese style curry, but I think Volcano deserves a following here.
