Midtown for groups - an impossibl chowhound challenge??? Save me from TGIF

I've searched the boards, yelp, etc for a place and it is possible it doesn't exist. Here are the parameters:

I'm with a group that has a meeting near 55th and 5th and wants to be able to walk to dinner - so a 10 block radius is what I've got.
There will be about 15 people.
I want to force them to go somewhere other than, say, Rosa Mexicana because that is their default.
Price range can be $, $$ but I won't be able to swing Felidia.
They aren't the most adventurous eaters so, for instance, while I'd love to take advantage of some of the amazing Japanese in the area I'll probably be vetoed.

Any suggestions?

Westchester - any restaurants people DO like? Dinner for 4

Thanks for all the advice. I've been to Cookery, Red Hat and X20 and agree these are great. I may try Bedford Post Barn or Fish. It's really a tough one... sigh....

Westchester - any restaurants people DO like? Dinner for 4

Having a birthday dinner for 4 in Westchester on a Sunday night.
Have already tried Cookery, Red Hat and X20. Is that it? Is there anything else people like? Lots of negativity on Westchester on these boards and I couldn't agree more. Just wondering if there are any yet discovered. I live in hope...

Frank Pepe's

I grew up in Westchester and my mom is still there. The most baffling thing is that to this day... there are very few good restaurants to go to. But one thing has been consistent - Central Avenue sucks. The stretch has seen the likes of Fudrucker's, Uno, and McDonald's come and go. When an old school diner is the best thing on the block - you know you're in trouble. Along comes FRANK PEPE'S. I was pretty skeptical. But for Westchester? This is a godsend. Seriously. Thin crust pizza - sauce that isn't too sweet - really simple toppings - the mushrooms aren't canned, which I can't say for many pizza joints out in the burbs. It's in fact Brooklyn quality (as a current Brooklynite I'm biased). The Foxon soda is good too - try the lemon lime. The photos on the wall of founder Frank and his family are great. But in truth the ambiance is nothing to write home about -- lights are really bright - but the pizza sure is great and you don't need that much ambiance in a pizza joint. Thank's to Frank and family.

Help me Chowhounds! Looking for strange/weird/eventful food experience

Thanks - I think what i'm looking for is table grills, shabu shabu, super authentic ethnic with atmosphere, weird live music, maybe even Russian Samovar? Something that goes beyond just fancy/amazing (he's willing to eat that) and veers more towards odd, underground and only in NY

does that help?

Help me Chowhounds! Looking for strange/weird/eventful food experience

Taking a rather conservative friend to dinner on Wednesday night and want to shake them up a bit - in a good way. If only there were a dark dining event that night - that's along the lines of what I want to do. I'm not talking Lucky Cheng's or Jekyl+Hyde - - I'm looking for something really unusal and eventful. This may be a tough one.... (Prefer Manhattan but Brooklyn works too)

And yeah - I know all the best food is here and I shouldn't be looking for schtick over food -- but this is an unusal case.

Cheap, festive(!) restaurant for private party.

Yep. Turning 40 in April. Need a space for about 30 people. I'll probably do appetizers only - ethnic food is good -- festive and on the offbeat side even better. Anyone have any recommendations? Can be in Manhattan or Brooklyn. All the stuff I find on the boards is on the more high brow level. (Maybe I'll be there at 50)

Wolfberry Soup at Congee - Anyone know?

Anyone know what is in the Wolfberry Soup at Congee village? It is on the menu as for 10 people only. I'm organizing a party and can't find any info on what it is... curious.

Prospect Heights Restaurants

My experience at Aliseo was a bit of a heartbreak. I had been there once two years ago and was hadn't gotten back there - but was excited to do so. Almost every dish on the table was bad. I'm willing to concede it could have been a bad night... but... everything?? (Again - I'll leave the fantastic wine list out of it) The octupus and pasta (which i was very much looking forward to) was tasteless. the homemade pasta had a good texture but the octopus was overcooked and flavorless. I had two friends with me from Milan. They ordered that and the ragu. There was literally a teaspoon of sauce (maybe a result of a 9pm res?) - I am not a red sauce person. I can tell the difference between Olive Garden and Lupa - I promise you. The sauce was scant and needed spice. My friend was excited to get the last piece of fish but she too had a tasteless experience. I would love nothing more than for Aliseo to be a great place. Maybe I was overcritical because of having Italians at the table. Don't know. But won't go back.

Aliseo is a major disappointment. I've tried it twice now and won't go back. On the other hand - Le Gamin is always delightful. The only dish I would stay away from is the Oeuf Gamin at brunch - (which is basically eggs served with a hockey puck) The crepes are delicious and not overwhelming. The service is lovely and in the warm weather the garden can't be beat.

Aliseo, Prospect Heights

Despite some warnings from Chowhound and elsewhere I went with a big group to Aliseo.
Not much good to report other than the wine. We started off with figs and prosciutto, stuffed olives and tiny meatballs. All of those appetizers were passable but we should have stopped there. The pastas were flavorless. Pasta with octopus and chickpeas was bland and disappointing for such an interesting mix. The traditional bolognese was weak - the fact that so little was dabbed on a big plate of pasta didn't help. The desserts were a let down as well. At $60 a head for an ultimately unremarkeable bording on bad meal... Next time I listen to the chowhounds.

good chow in Scarsdale... FOUND! Meritage

I'm always desperate to find good food experiences in lower westchester and Friday night I found one. No small event. I accidentally went to Meritage (1505 Weaver Street ) because I thought, based on some old Chow posts, that it was a place called La Cigna. It was a great place. We had fresh crab with avocado as an appetizer- a special on the menu and it was delicious. There were three of us and we had filet mignon, linguine with fresh tomatoes and paperadelle with bolognese sauce. A few criticisms... sure... The linguine was a bit short on sauce - the medium filet had some areas to rare for my friend's taste -- but overall the food was in fact delicious. For dessert we shared an amazing chocolate bread pudding. The host was very welcoming and the waitstaff friendly and knowledgeable. It's fantastic to find a place in LW that I actually want to go back to. Yes - these are Manhattan prices - but at least it's Manhattan food. www.meritagerestaurant.net

Expense Account Dinner - WHERE TO???

I am having dinner in May with a friend and she is expensing it. The sky is pretty much the limit. Any suggestions? I prefer below 42nd Street - and the boroughs are not out of the question though seem unlikely choices. I'm interested in Italian, Fish, Japanese, French or Indian. Thanks in advance!

anyone been to St. Lucia ?

Just returned from Saint Lucia (Nov 06) and here are some recommendations. DO NOT eat at the Anse Chastenat. The food is lousy. The shrimp cocktail was canned baby shrimp served in russian dressing... no joke.... The chef seems to have checked out completely. Maybe they'll have someone new managing the menu at the soon to open swanky Jade Mountain Resort restaurant. A meal at Discovery Mountain was quite good - the chef formerly of The Fat Duck in London. The food at Ladera is fantastic. Wish I'd had more there. It was the best food I had in Saint Lucia.

Good eats near Royal Garden Hotel on Kensington

I'll be staying at the Royal Garden for 4 nights.

I've planned to go to the River Cafe one night but have no other plans.

Any recommendations for that area? Looking for elegant and/or down and dirty greatness. Just not touristy...

thanks!

Co-ed Bachelor Party-recommendations for surreal meal and entertainment needed.

Definately don't want to go off the food topic. I know that there are a few restaurants in the city where karaoke goes on during food - so I'd only want that combo of a recommendation. Scratch the dancing question unless the restaurant offers dancing on the dinner table while eating.

Co-ed Bachelor Party-recommendations for surreal meal and entertainment needed.

Am putting together a coed bachelor party for 12. We want to go out in the LES/Chinatown area. There will be 12 of us on a Saturday night. Need a place to go to dinner first - doesn't have to be Chinese - can be anything. The stranger the better. Looking for less expensive because we're following up with karaoke and or dancing... recommendations for all appreciated.

Staten Island Ferry Adventure

I'm taking a friend on the Ferry for a picnic. I want to follow up with a bar (for about 10 people) afterwards on the Manhattan side. Someplace that is not a FRAT bar... someplace weird, divey, bizarre. Any suggestions welcome. A place with snacks or dessert would be swell.
