Sunday evening feasts and Monday evening dinner deals in Toronto

Note that it's $29pp and a minimum of 2 must order. There was some confusion on that (the presser wasn't very clear).

I didn't take a billion years to process photos for once:
http://www.foodpr0n.com/2013/12/02/th...

It's nice that it'll be open late. Matty was saying that he'd like to open even later on Fri/Sat.

This shop is pretty much a direct result of their win on Burger Wars (I didn't even know!). The burger can be had at their restaurant proper too, but at a higher cost.

However, my faves were the Beaverton and the Italian. I'm meh on their onion rings (I prefer a lighter batter). And fries were fine.

Some interesting, notable and delicious Chinese food this weekend!! - Yang's, Potato Noodle House, Fisherman's Lobster Clubhouse and Oriental Gourmet.

The soup and the chicken were my two favourites for sure. Great overall meal at Oriental Gourmet. Would consider taking my family there (and that's saying something...!!)

Though not un-tasty, I was sorely disappointed at the execution on the duck yolk lobster - raw lobster bits and gummy filler-mixed yolk is not what I expect for the $30 premium. Perhaps sticking with the crab is the best way to go.

Hmnn... warning on the coffee. It's less exciting than I want it to be for a cafe.

Lovely looking chocolates, however! Very nicely executed.

Touhenboku Ramen

Gettin' called out here!!

Well, I thought the garlic "Black" bowl was the best - but the broth was very saucy vs soupy and reminded me more of dan dan mein. This is not a bad thing, but I don't think of ramen when I think of that bowl. Still, good and hearty.

You can check out the ramen machine the owner imported in the back. It creates a flatter noodle (similar to the one at Ryoji). There are two thicknesses to choose from: thin and thick. I opted for thick (the thinner one is very reminiscent of instant ramen).

Their "Light" bowl is a lot closer to the rest of the ramen being served around the place and in line with what people might thick of ramen around here.

Red bowl is their spicy noodle and not that spicy. Which is fine, just don't go in expecting fire. I understand that you can adjust the heat levels, but we weren't given that option.

Broths are chicken based and hoooo is there a lot of collagen in 'em. Even their light broth has a good amount. Their garlic is crazy thick.

Of the desserts I had, the chiffon was nice. I asked if they were ever going to do a Mt. Blanc and they said maybe! !!!!

I would return sometime to eat the garlic bowl again, but I'd have to be hungry. And cold. So like, soonish, yeah? Santouka (hard noodle, less salt) still wins for my classic bowl. But Raijin will still win my dollars most often due to convenience and still-tasty.

I think it would have helped to be open to maybe 7p? Just enough to get a snack on the way home or to the gym, etc.

try Micheal's or one of the other art/craft stores. They carry plains ones which they can decorate.

Not cheap though! However, maybe you can look online for costumes? Since Halloween has just ended, maybe you can take advantage of the sales.

Tasting menu tasting menu

Agree with Jo's assessment.

Chantecler is delicious, but the experience is really expanded when you understand the subtleties of the dishes. Chantecler is more casual and lively. Jeans and nice top kind of style.

Bero is fancier-pants in many ways. Linen cloths, more refined environment. A lot of experimentation and play on the plate. Not where you go when you have meat & potatoes kind of people. You could still wear jeans and a nice top, but it can and does go dressier.

I had The Grove's full menu a few months back and that was also really good. Lovely plating as well. Somewhere between Chantecler and Bero in style. Great experience there. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/s...

I'd go back to Bero before The Grove, all else the same. I've eaten Chantecler's tasting menu three or four times now and would totally return again, sooner than later (possibly sooner than Bero).

I went and had three mains: the laksa, char kway teow, and the chicken rice. All were okay-lah. The laksa was the best of the three. Decent flavour on that one. Good heat.

I think that the prices are high, but sort of understandable given the location/rent of the space. It's a fancier/trendier restaurant.

The HCR is a bit of fusion, using grilled versus poached chicken. The one I'm looking for is one that's far more like white cut chicken 蒸白切雞, like at Phoenix.

Everything I tried is all far more representative of Malay/Sing cuisine than anything in the area.
