Is it safe to let my chicken stock simmer on the stove overnight while I sleep?

400F seems too hot for overnight stock.

where to buy calamari steak in Dallas?

I've seen frozen calamari steak at HEB in Houston, might be available up there as well.

Where are you buying your turkey, or other main course this year.

A friend told me she has ordered a fresh turkey from Sprouts for 99 cents a pound, don't know any other details.

Pecan Shelling

Google is your friend... this one popped up first for "pecan shelling Austin" 50 cents per pound.

Math Teachers need Bar in Houston!

It's all about beer, but the Flying Saucer on Main street is not far. Decent bar food, can be a bit noisy.

Chipotle Workers Quit, Shut Down Store, Because That Job Sucks

From PA department of labor:

What is the Law Regarding Breaks and Meal Periods?

Pennsylvania employers are required to provide break periods of at least 30 minutes for minors ages 14 through 17 who work five or more consecutive hours. Employers are not required to give breaks for employees 18 and over. If your employer allows breaks, and they last less than 20 minutes, you must be paid for the break. If your employer allows meal periods, the employer is not required to pay you for your meal period if you do not work during your meal period and it lasts more than 20 minutes. A collective bargaining agreement may also govern this issue.

What is this?

Looks like a banana flower; in the 2nd photo there appears to be some galangal behind it.

What "typical American Foods" would you serve to foreigners?

Live in Houston, from Philly. Here I might serve tex-mex, BBQ, etouffee, gumbo, jambalaya. In Philly cheesesteaks, blue crabs, bluefish, blackfish, scrapple, soft pretzels. Not everything in one dinner though.

I'm in the mood for chicken drumsticks...

Grilled tandoori style marinated in yogurt/tandoori masala; served with cucumber raita

Filipino adobo, braised with onions in vinegar and soy sauce; with jasmine rice

Roasted or grilled with Frank's/Crystal/Louisiana hot sauce and butter; w/blue cheese dip and celery or carrots

Houston Asian Markets - Tarako?

You might check Nippon Daido, they are the only Japanese retail store I am familiar with. Kazy Gourmet used to sell retail but I believe they are wholesale only now.

Pasadena, Houston Heights Italian

I wouldn't come to Houston for Italian. That said, there are a few places that don't suck. Da Marco, Dolce Vita, and Vinoteca Poscol are all in the Montrose area not far from the Heights, all owned by the same guy. I have not been to any of them but have heard good things. Vincent's in the same general area, pretty good. Recently have been to Da Vinci in the Katy area, good food and service but about 40 miles from Pasadena. Closer to Pasadena, for a more Houston experience, I would suggest you try a chicken-fried steak at Kelley's Country Cookin' on I-45 South near Hobby airport. Sort of a Texas take on a NJ diner. Doneraki near I-45 and 610 south for decent tex-mex.

Good Pizza Place That Delivers Near Town & Country/ Memorial Area

Another vote for Brothers, good NY-style pies.

Where to for dinner next?

Asia Market on Cavalcade in the Heights is a thai market that also serves prepared food. Very tasty curries, noodle dishes, papaya salad, mango sticky rice. Not sure if they have room for a party of 10.

Where to for dinner next?

On the subject of pizza, I've found a few places here that make decent NY-style pies; in order of my preference:
- Brothers Pizza on Hwy 6 at I-10
- Rosa's Pizza on Mason Rd Katy area
- Romano's on W. Gray
- Luigi's on Almeda

Keep your ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt but give me a taste of my youth....

I grew up in Philly ("wooder ice"), I always considered it a Philly thing like scrapple or soft pretzels, although there was plenty of "italian ice" in NYC when I lived there years ago, I assume it's still there. You can make your own in an ice cream maker, that's what I do here in Houston, instead of getting "shaved ice" or "snow cones".

Feast or Underbelly??

Not sure about their NO location. I heard a rumor that some of the Feast partners would be involved in a new venture, no details though. Have heard good things about Oxheart but have not been there yet.

Ethnic grocers in Houston

Lots of good suggestions already, Phoenicia is great for mediterranean and eastern european stuff. Many chinese and vietnamese markets on Bellaire Blvd. Hong Kong Market and mall is big and clean, also Welcome and Dynasty Mkts for chinese, My Hoa for vietnamese. Most of this is on the west side, not too close to Montrose. Behind Canino's on Airline there are vendors selling herbs, spices, chiles. Went to a Sprouts recently for the first time, nice produce at reasonable prices. Fiesta markets all over town have a good selection of produce and some locations have bakeries. Around Hillcroft there are lots of south asian stores.

What TV/movie/book restaurant would you want to go to? What place would you avoid?

I ate at that diner in Hawthorne in the mid-70s, I think I read recently that it no longer exists.

Burgers...have you tried it with panade (bread paste)...?

Not using a panade, but lately I've been making turkey burgers with crumbled feta and finely chopped spinach mixed into the turkey. Good flavor and not so dry. Top with cucumber/yogurt sauce.

super-coarse-ground sausage/hot links?

These guys make some really good sausage, I've had their hot links and fresh jalapeno sausages, I would say the best I've had here in Houston, not sure how they compare to what you're looking for:

What is the most UNUSUAL method of cooking you have ever seen or heard of?

Whole potatoes "baked" in boiling resin (old Joy of cooking)

One Night in Houston

Feast - 10 minute drive from downtown, quite good "nose-to-tail" dishes https://sites.google.com/site/feastho...

Reef - good seafood, modern trendy vibe; also about 10 mins from downtown http://www.reefhouston.com/

Brennan's - upscale old-school Gulf Coast cuisine; haven't been there in years, used to be very good; expensive

Hugo's - Upscale mex-mex, have not been there but it gets lots of good reviews. http://hugosrestaurant.net/

Also check out b4-u-eat.com, you can search by neighborhood for reviews

Where can I buy Old Bay seafood seasoning

I get it at HEBs in Houston, it's not in the spice section but next to the seafood counter, might be worth a look there or ask the seafood guy.

anybody been to the house of blues in houston?

It's pretty mediocre, think chain bar food. In the same complex are Mia Bella with decent Italian food for Houston, and right next door is a Moroccan/tapas place with pretty good food but service is spotty. You best bet might be Guadalajara Grill, same complex (Houston Pavilions) on the other side of the block, pretty good Tex-Mex and there is a bit of a bar scene there in the evenings.
