Goldsboro, NC - Quality Dining Recs - HELP!

Had an old time friend call tonight to ask about finer dining establishments in Goldsboro. He and his wife are coming in on Wednesday for the funeral of another friend, and they want to treat their host family to a nice dinner during the stay in their home. Obviously, no bbq, buffets, chain recs... etc. Somewhere with a solid, comprehensive menu and a full service bar. Driving, within a reasonable distance, would not be a problem. It's been a while since I've lived in that part of the state, so I wasn't able to give him any suggestions. Thanks.

Seaffod in Raleigh??

42nd St. is living on past reputation. Last several visits (3) have been totally forgettable from bad service to bad food. Mentioned this to both the server and management each time and was given a complacent "Sorry". Don't know that we'll go back.

There's a place called Tony's Oyster Bar in Cary that is now under new ownership. We went one night last week and it was very good. The former owner had this place and another seafood restaurant in Raleigh and both were not bad, however the new owners have kicked it up a bit with Tony's. Definitely another "go to" there.

Margaux's, also in Raleigh, is not a dedicated seafood restaurant, but does serve outstanding seafood dishes.

Also, if you want to drive over to Chapel Hill, Squid's is solid. We dine there at least once a month. Worth a drive over from Raleigh.

Atlantic beach for foodies

Sadly, Mrs. Willis' has been closed for quite some time - at least 2 years now.

One place on the Morehead waterfront that is outstanding, and uses as much locally produced product as possible, is Sammy's. The Ruddy Duck is another.

The Crab Shack at Salter Path is also worth a visit.

Beefmastor Inn - Wilson, NC

Went about a month ago, after not having been in several years. It's under new ownership since last visit... suffice it to say things have definitely changed, and not for the better.
Steak quality was sub-par compared to previous visits and staff attitude sucked.
Will not be back.

I've heard the former owner has opened a place in / around Greenville, NC, but don't know if that's true. If it is, and I find the place I will give it a try. One thing is certain, it can't be much worse than his former place in Wilson.

Calling all Myrtle Beach chowsters, help!!! ~~SOS~~

We've always enjoyed carolina roadhouse. great steaks. noisy, gets very busy . typically one of the places we enjoy dining at each time we visit mb.

Calling all Myrtle Beach chowsters, help!!! ~~SOS~~

Send him to Duck's or Fat Harold's.

Also, head up to Little River and eat at Snooky's.

Allen & Son BBQ - Chapel Hill?

Don't know about Byrd's. Info please?

Allen & Son BBQ - Chapel Hill?

Next time, just drive on into Hillsborough and try the Hillsborough BBQ Co. on Nash Street. While it's appearance and menu isn't typical of a bbq joint, their bbq is outstanding - so much so to rival that at Allen's. Their bbq chicken isn't too bad either. And like Allen's they cook over wood.

Good eats in Selma, NC (or thereabouts)?

Not sure if Hill's is still open. The owner, Tommy Hill, died last year. He was a great guy... went to school with him and his sisters.

NC Emerald Isle & thereabouts - good eats?

Both Sammy's Ice House and the Ruddy Duck in Morehead City are worth a drive over from EI and they are "locals" places to those living in the area.

If you want them to have a somewhat "southern" experience then you can't go wrong with Amos Mosquitos in Atlantic Beach.

Saxapahaw General Store (between Triangle and Triad NC)

Yep. But still, get there early.

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

Skip the Pit in Raleigh and stop at a new place, Hillsborough BBQ. Great eastern style bbq and awesome sides. Doesn't look like your typical bbq joint, but the food is worth a visit. While not quite as good as A&S, it's somewhere you'll likely go back to.

Oxford NC. What's great? in Oxfor or nearby

House of Ribeyes does a pretty good steak; their seafood options aren't bad either. Food is consistently good and service is commendable. I usually eat there when I'm in that area. The bartender makes a pretty decent Royal Flush, too.

If you're there at breakfast time, Sunrise Biscuit is a can't miss.

Danny's BBQ in Cary. Bad. Real bad

Hillsborough BBQ Co. that recently opened in Hillsborough is pretty good. Not quite as good as the original Allen & Son in Hillsborough, but definitely a contender. Beats almost anything else in the triangle area. We've eaten there 4 or 5 times since they opened and have yet to have a bad meal... some of their sides could use some work, but when I want bbq, the sides are just that - sides.

NC BBQ

Check their website at the link above.

This is a neat place and worth a visit. We've enjoyed all our meals there. The jalapeno cornbread is quite good; pork is outstanding. Unless things have changed in the past 3 months, this place is a cash only joint (can't remember if they have an atm inside) for those choosing to pay with credit / debit cards.

New woodcooker in Lumberton

Maybe just for now.... one can only hope. Open Sunday then close Mon. & Tues. would be just fine.

NC farm dinners, fire dept bbqs, chili/stew cookoffs, creek oyster festivals, fish frys, etc. thread

This is true. Their website is an interesting window into everyman's North Carolina. Their food blogger does a great job; we've been to some of the places he posted about and enjoyed them.
NCFolklife.com I think is the website.

north carolina foodie towns?

Perhaps you mean Allen & Sons between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough... the A&S Pittsboro location is name only - bbq is totally different. Cooked in electric cookers, extremely greasy... nowhere near what Keith Allen still cooks over hardwood.

Mooresville, NC- Recommendations

Lancaster's BBQ & Wings is good. Have been going there since the original place was in a small gas station they remodeled to work out of.

Also, if it's still there, The Little Kitchen has outstanding prime rib. It's been about 8 years since I ate there last (moved away from the area), but it was always a quality meal.

ISO Blue Bell Ice Cream in the Triangle

They still do. Dropped in there last week for some.

Graham, Snow Camp, White Cross, Saxapahaw NC recs

Will second the Saxapahaw General Store restaurant. Have never had a bad meal there. We eat there 3 or 4 times a month.

The Eddy, however, we've found to be hit and miss - we've been 4 times since they opened and it's kinda like UHaul - it's an adventure every time. We'll probably go back since none of us have died from anything we've gotten there, but for the prices they charge I can find other venues better.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Snooky's in Little River (above NMB and before the state line) is a great "locals" place with outstanding seafood. They serve both lunch and dinner. When we're even remotely close to that area it's a must do stop for us.

Also, we've gotten a pretty good steak at Carolina Roadhouse on various occasions. Plus, their honey buttered yeast rolls alone are worth a visit.

Eastern NC cheese biscuits

Not only are their cheese biscuits wonderful, their tenderloin biscuit is also outstanding. These biscuits are catheads, not comparable in any way to any fast food chain biscuit offerings.

If you haven't ever been to Flo's but are close by Wilson, this place is worth seeking out.

Paula Deen's restaurant

The Wilkes House IS worth a visit. Head and shoulders above PD's.

Statesville, NC Eats

Keaton's is an absolute must do. Maybe more than once... No other way around it. The place is the stereotypical dive, that's part of what makes it so good. You'd be wise to call first to see if they're open, I've known their summer hours to vary somewhat.

Worth eating at a Bulls game?

My comment was based on food vendors located inside the ballpark, not TRSB.

The food at TRSB is good for a sport bar and is better than what can be purchased inside the stadium, no doubt. They've had the spray misters all along and use them all the time when it's hot.

Myrtle Beach Grand Strand Recs for All Meals

Snooky's on Little River is a hidden gem. Great views of the ICW, primarily all fresh seafood. Have never had a bad meal there. Casual, very comfortable locals type place. This is my "go to" when I can't decide. Eat there several times when we're in that area on vacation.

Worth eating at a Bulls game?

Sadly, your best bet will be ChickFilA, and they are closed on Sunday.

If you can find Carolina Packers Bright Leaf Hot Dogs, they might be a good bet as well.

Sliced Deli Country Ham in Atlanta (the real salty stuff...like Smithfield)?

Johnston County Hams, Smithfield, NC is the place to order what you're look for from. They ship. Products are outstanding. I buy a county ham (as well as other items) to bake two or three times a year from them.

Plus, they're a family owned /operated business, unlike the more well known Smithfield brand from Smithfield, VA.

Best Pizza in Raleigh

Steve, how is broad street cafe? I've heard mixed reviews about them. Never had coal fired pizza before and am intriuged - bbq pizza maybe? LOL.

BTW, got your PM about Capital BBQ; plan on trying it this week. We saw it the other night on the way to Shucker's at Heritage.
