Se Salt

yeah, the colors on the sign try to clue people in on the name. "Sea" kind of curls down into "Salt" You're not the first.

Scott Ja-mamas

Isn't a place that serves ribs with bbq sauce, baked beans, chicken, and slaw also latching onto this "American concept of BBQ" you speak of? If you want to imply that I've latched onto a specific category of BBQ, then you can't say that Scott Jamama's hasn't done the same, they just aren't creating a good version of that concept. Until you add smoke it isn't going to cut it for this "American concept of BBQ."

Scott Ja-mamas

I disagree with your assessment. Smoke, low heat and real flames/charcoal make barbeque. But I'm a purist who is slightly annoyed when people call grilling barbeque. Cooking meat low and slow without smoke is braising or roasting.

Also Rendezvous advertises on their website that they use smoke.

San Diego Foodie coming to MN

I'd add Haute Dish to the mix, and depending where in downtown, Sea Change would be another worthy choice.

Jelly doughnuts or Bavarian cremes?

I think Emily's Bakery does an excellent custard filled bismark (that seems to be the prevailing term around these parts if you ask me) They are a ways away in Hastings but make some tasty pastries.

Bánh rán

No go at Ai Hue, worth checking out though. Definitely a locals no frills secret. They did point me to the market a little further east on University, He Tien or something like that. I'll have to check them out next time I'm out for lunch in the area.

Keefer court seems promising as well, I'll add it to the list.

Bánh rán

With a plethora of Vietnamese places in the Twin Cities, I thought it'd be easy to find fresh bánh rán (kind of a donut, all kinds of delicious) but I haven't had any luck. Shuang Hur is the only place I've seen them but they have never been fresh.

For those not familiar you may have had their cousin, a deep fried rice dough ball coated with sesame seeds and filled with bean paste -many have had the red bean paste but the bánh rán has a sweetened mung bean paste (light yellow and slightly crumbly) - they are really a treat, hopefully someone out there can help me track them down!

Thanks

best bloody mary bars in the TC?

Any suggestions? I've seen it at Tom Reid's and I'm aware of the Wild Onion, not really looking for a sports bar or a meat market, any other places that people area aware of for a tasty bloody mary bar?

Simply the best Korean meal I have eaten in decades!

We tried Sole cafe this week and really enjoyed it as well. The comments about the hospitality are spot on, the quality of food as well. Unfortunately the place was pretty empty as well we were one of two tables in the restaurant.

The amount of food was really a good value - $8 for any of their lunch options.

BTW, the pickled cucumbers are really really good.

For all you fans of Trader Joe's tuna curry...

They've got the red and green in Minnesota. No yellow yet.

Bad service in the Twin Cities [Moved from MSP board]

I believe last I saw they were likely to open in late November. Maybe December. Construction at the new place is what it is, slow with unexpected twists and turns. They have stated that they'd like it to be more of what they were doing at the old location. And I agree, their service has been outstanding and I would also expect more of the same.

Best Bakery -- not refined, not French, just good donuts

I've never heard of a cake donut that was baked. is that unique to A Baker's Wife?

What's the difference between lump charcoal and hardwood charcoal?

The difference is lump charcoal is just coal from hardwood.... nothing more. Hardwood charcoal is bits and pieces that have been formed into briquettes. Some are like Kingsford (which I do not believe is hardwood based... maybe it is) and others are hardwood based. At least that is my understanding

Lump Charcoal

Thanks to everyone! good information. Northwest Charcoal and Chemical sounds like a good option.

Lump Charcoal

I found one source for lump charcoal (coastal seafoods) but it was way more that I was willing to spend. Trader Joes has a reasonable price on hardwood charcoal but that isn't quite the same. Does anyone know of a source that has more affordable lump charcoal in the Twin Cities?

112 Eatery, still good?

I think you'll find opposition to your last comment, maybe you haven't experienced all there is to offer. I suggest you take a look at some of these threads:

MSP Cocktails

I'll second the Bradstreet recommendation. If I were to suggest a single place to someone, it would be Bradstreet.

Ngon Bistro or Heartland?

These are very different restaurants if you ask me, and while I've only been to the wine bar at Heartland and lunch at Ngon, I would personally prefer Ngon just because I enjoy the atmosphere there more. Heartland would probably be most people's pick based on food and ambiance... just not mine.

That was incredibly helpful I'm sure ;)

Heidi's Fire Today: Total Loss

extremely sad. It sounded like Blackbird Cafe was affected as well.

Hopefully the can pull themselves up and re-open.

msp - french macarons

macaroons are different than macarons. Macaroons are the coconut treat while macarons are a french pastry sandwich.

Though I suppose sometimes even the bakers in the states get the names confused. Maybe it isn't worth the clarrification.

More help for jfood from MSP Hounds

Absolutely agree, it is by far the best restaurant in Uptown (IMO). It is a place I would love to have around the block.

Any good food in Duluth?

Second the Anchor Burger - and second the description.

MSP - St. Paul recommendations

Just a quick clarification - The Skyway no longer attaches to the Hamm building, but it can get you within a block of the restaurant. Probably head to the Wells Fargo building and then through the mid-block plaza area that passes by Great Waters, take a left and you are there.

Jamaica Red Ale - MSP

I asked at Ramaley if they could get the Jamaica Red.... lo and behold they could and did. Not sure if this will help anyone out or not but thought I'd follow up with a report.

Definitely one of my favorite red ales. didn't hold up to my memory from 3 years back but still a good beer (maybe because it wasn't draught). Also not worth 10.99 for a 6 pack.

Iowa breaded pork tenderloin sandwich

If one where to ask a butcher for the meat to be prepared for them - how would one do that? I asked for inch medallians cut from the tenderloin then pounded out to about a 1/2 to a 1/4 inch thick. They were about the size of the bun, but seemed to be the right thickness. Seemed to me that it was probably a half portion. Should I start with a thicker cut? Then butterfly or not? Just keep it the same and eat two?

msp - french macarons

I was at Patisserie Margo this summer and got a passion fruit/chocolate macaron.... been wanting to go back since and can't give a reasonable explanation as to why I haven't. They supposedly make pain au chocolat like they do in Paris as well. Also on my list of reasons to go back. A croissant with a bar of chocolate in the middle is not pain au chocolat.

MSP - Looking for a cheap going away party hangout

Thought I'd turn to the chowhounders for some ideas. I have a friend moving away soon and we are looking for a place that a dozen or so friends could get together and see him off this Friday afternoon/evening.

What I first thought of was a place like the Nook or Shamrocks - good cheap food and since the man of the hour doesn't drink the food is more important than the cocktails. But then I thought it would be good if they had some sort of activity that we could all do afterward - play pool, throw darts etc.

So if there is a place like that near Shamrocks we could go to two different places.

If there is a place that has everything, those suggestions would be happily/graciously accepted.

Other ideas?

Requirements:

Good and cheap food, room for 12 or so people, some sort of activity for after dinner.

If only we could just go to the Anchor Bar in Superior WI!
