Making dosais on a cast iron pan

Dosa! I'm living overseas right now and I've got an Indian cook from Chennai. One of my friends back home recommended that I ask her to make these (I had no idea what they were). Turns out it really surprised her when I asked for it "No white man knows dosa!?!" She uses just a simple little iron pan, looks like a crepe pan. Using cast iron makes a ton of sense when I get back to the states and have to make them myself. Thanks for the tip!

Bahrain - best places for a foodie?

Places I've enjoyed recently

CoCo's
Monsoons
Muju (for brunch)

My friends recommend

Meat Co.
Bushido
Trader Vic's (though that may be more for drinks)

The shwarma stands in shwarma alley (behind the Gulf Hotel) are good, approx 3 per BD, but the ones in Hidd are cheaper.
Al Abraaj is highly recommended.
Iskenderun Grills Restaurant off Exhibition Ave (near the Yum Yum Tree) is great for standard middle eastern fare (great lamb chops).

There is an indian restaurant near my apt in Adliya called the Clay Oven that my realtor recommended (and she also recommended my indian cook who is great, so I trust the rec), if you make a turn across from the KFC you'll go right to it.

You have probably found all of these by now since you've been in country since March, but it might help.

Dinner on the way from CT to the Cape?

I have to agree with this recommendation. My girlfriend is from right around there. It's at most a 20 min detour each way from 195 (just take 24 South to 77/177 and turn left.. Evelyn's is just down the road on the right. And if you get there a bit earlier stop by Coastal Roasters, it's a great little coffee shop, but they close around 5pm usually).

New London CT

Thanks a bunch. Looking forward to getting into town next weekend.

New London CT

I'll actually be living over in Mystic (or just north of it, not exactly sure where the house is at). So that works fine. Thanks.

New London CT

Hey all. I'm getting stationed up in New London CT in about a week and a half. Was just wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for the area. Thanks.

Searching for best breakfast in Athens

It might not be the "best" breakfast/brunch place around but since I've been in town I've made it a habit to have brunch at Big City Bread at least once a month. I just really enjoy the atmosphere and I also really like quiche, which they always have some version of.

Athens, GA: new businesses news.

Was just there with some of my vietnamese friends and they were bitching that there wasn't any mint. Apparently they're used to it being there. I think the quality is pretty damn good, might go back for lunch today actually. It's not the best I've had, but it's not the worst by far either (that might have been the pho that I tried to make the first time.. yeah... haha).

Athens, GA: new businesses news.

What's the address? Some pho would be great for lunch one of the days this week.

Crawfish in Athens GA

You had to bring up softshell crab. Now I'm craving all sorts of seafood goodness. Had some shrimp andouille jambalaya tonight and it just became unsatisfying. Thanks. Jk. If I find some I'll let you know, hell, might invite to the boil, always good to meet new people right?

Crawfish in Athens GA

Does anyone know a good place in the Athens area to try and get live crawfish? Or lacking that, if you can catch them here? Thanks.

Cine and the National, Athens

It's definitely a good deal. Have gone a number of times over the past couple months and had a great time each time. The food is good and both options usually look very tasty. As some of the others say the wine list is great also, plenty of options that keep total cost down while not sacrificing quality.

Magic Hat No. 9

Thanks. And it's not the first beer I've had that "has flavor". Just thought I'd pass along a comment about one I'd never heard of before. You're right about there being some good ones in GA. Terrapin's new Wake and Bake (released just a week or so ago, was at the party) is a very tasty stout, and likely to be enjoyed by those who aren't big stout fans. You can clearly taste the coffee in the flavor, but I love coffee so I was okay with that. Oddly a stout with a coffee focus managed to get rid of the bitterness that I have difficulty enjoying in so many other stouts.

Magic Hat No. 9

My bad, he had bad info then. Still tasty.

What's Your Favorite Domestic Beer and Why?

It's gotta be Yuengling for my favorite domestic.

Magic Hat No. 9

Was out for drinks with one of my buddies and we were talking about beers and drinks in general (the main part was my bemoaning the fact that they don't sell Yuengling in GA where we are moving in a few weeks) and he brought up a Virginia brew called Magic Hat No. 9. He recommended it pretty strongly.

So I'm at home the next day and looking for something to have with a snack (just crackers and chicken salad, it was already made and I was lazy, hah). Open the fridge and see the usual stuff, Yuengling, Michelob Ultra (my mom drinks it), and a few bottles left from a Microbrew mixed pack. Turns out one of them is the Magic Hat. So I figure what the hell, I'll try it.

It was very tasty. A very good beer for with an afternoon snack or if it's warm out. It had a fruity taste to it (infused with apricot or something so it makes sense) but not overwhelmingly so. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else sees it on the shelf and wonders if it's worth a try, I say yes.

favorite junk food and wine pairings?

going with the Champagne trend, Champagne with Fried Chicken. Also Chianti with Pizza (though that's almost how it's supposed to be if you ask me.. haha).

Best Eats in Athens GA

Just had to say that 5 & 10, while the food was absolutely amazing, their limoncello was horrible. Far too sugary and they didn't let the rinds soak in the alcohol long enough. Small complaint though for what was otherwise a wonderful meal.

Oh and went to The Grit based on some of the recommendations on here. Just so happen to love Reubens and they had a Tofu Reuben. Ended up being very tasty. So I'd recommend that to anyone else who likes the sandwich as well.

Was just in town for two nights, will be moving down there in Jan. and can't wait to try the other places, especially some of the BBQ and southern style places.
