Overall view of dining scene in Austin
Thanks for post. Yes, I do agree with you, it's just the overall standards seem to be falling.
Overall view of dining scene in Austin
Folks, what can I say. I've lived here for 12 years. We have eaten out almost weekly since that time at many of the restaurants ever mention in Chowhound. We have raved about Austin food. We have had well executed dishes along with excellent service and ambiance in the same restaurant. Then we've had at least one of each in other places. One can really run the gambit from trailer food to high-end indulgences.
But, as of the last couple of years, I am beginning to become more and more disappointed with the food and service; more especially of the $$-$$$ restaurants. Just last night, we decided to try Siena since we had not been there in several months. Of course, the Boar is great, but everything else left us wanting. The risotto was no better than one from a box...really! We watched the service staff give back massages in front of the cooking window...lordy, lordy!
No long ago we ate at Jeffery's...had to send dishes back and service was lacking. When I pay $150+ for a meal for two...I expect to walk away very satisfied with service and quality of food.
Folks, I'm just not finding great food. No, I have yet to try Congress or Parkside.
I know that the economy is tight, but I could do with smaller dishes than with ones that I can cook better at home. And really, classic spaghetti carbonara, how simple a dish...eggs, pasta, cheeses and pancetta--how easy is that--can't find a good one.
Hope I didn't upset you guys too much...I love Austin, but I am really getting more and more disappointed and stay home more and more.

Crab Place - on the Ship Channel 30 yrs ago
Oh, I do remember going to the Athens Bar when I was young and dumb. It was a great time there. Really a place to party, but one always went with another couple...and, Shanghai Red's was so perfect for watching the ships and it did have good food. Jimmie Walkers was also perfect for watching the pleasure boats coming and going. Ah, the boardwalk before Ferttia.
Did make the Jacinto Inn.
Someone below spoke of Jamail's...used to go there cause they had a coke machine that was $.10 forever. Do miss the good ole days of Houston.
Need Fresh Oyster Advice Please - Post Oil Spill

Any place for unpasteurized fresh gulf oysters on the half shell between Houston and Galveston?
Cooper's BBQ, Llano
I think the chicken is some of best I have ever had...can't really say much for the ribs.
Driving across TX- Shreveport, LA to Dallas on I-20, then 287 to Amarillo.
Country Tavern
Texas 31 & FM 2767, Kilgore, TX 75662
has been voted one of the BBQ places in TX. I've been there and I 2nd that vote. It's just a drop south of *20 and very well worth the detour.
Oysters in Galveston
Is it possible to get unpasteurized fresh gulf oysters on the half shell in a restaurant in Galveston?
Breakfast-Lake Travis area??
Tried Nobel Pig the other day. I think it is great for some new and different foods. I ordered a pulled pork & coldslaw sandwich and it was wonderful. Haven't tried breakfast yet. Terrible location.
Headed to Waco for 3 months
I've yet to travel around the world, but I have to admit, some of the best seafood I have ever had was in Sydney.
As for the stomach ache, carry Tums and eat on............
Parksville/Nanimo

Seattle Waterfront

Parksville/Nanimo
Will arrive for a week or so next Fri. Want to sample local food...especially seafood and oysters. We are from landlocked Austin, TX. Don't mind traveling for great food and scenic places. Please suggest 'must eat/see'; and, hopefully, some of the restaurants will have good food and great views. Not really interested in sushi or Asian food. Thanks...
Fried Catfish
Checked the board for the 'best fried catfish within 25 miles of Austin.' But, I'm talking about Southern Fried Catfish. The Boat House Grill has come the closest. Been to several of the places named and they do have crispy fried catfish..............that is so bland I can't stand it. Most of the places have great fried shrimp, but when it comes to the catfish..........nothing, nada, bland. When I eat catfish, I don't use all the dipping sauces and that is the only reason I can think that these places have highly rated catfish. So, I guess I will have to go to Louisiana or Mississippi to get really good Southern Fried Catfish.
