Argentine Olive Oil?

Noah's (the natural food store) at Y&E has been carrying some new stuff from AR, organic. it was on sale for 5.99 or 6.99 for a relatively smallish bottle, tried it a couple time very good. Still prefer Bragg's spanish, but perhaps the size was the real issue.

ISO local organic strawberries

wow, some pretty unhelpful replies....Anyway i know for a fact that Kawartha Ecological Growers have had them the last 3 weeks (organic, local)....now i won't lie they weren't as good as my regular fruit guy's berries....his are not sprayed but not certified. He had some last week, but i doubt he would this week. I go to the apple tree market @ Y & E.

Parisian Macaroons?

we live right nearby and they are really great. maybe not as good as paris, but best i've had in the city hands down.

Best macarons in Toronto?

Bambouche @ yonge and davisville has japanese style macarons in really great flavours. they are bloody amazing!

Local products

Funny enough we've always bought local miso and tofu! I never really realised until this year...lol

GTA Maple Syrup Suggestions - High quality & reasonably priced

I think it's unpasturised and it's the very dark grade. It comes in those plastic mini buckets. It's from a farm nearby. I use it for baking and sometimes as sweetner. I prefer it to molasses or agave nectar.
I am not wholly concerned with organic- prefer local and small production.

GTA Maple Syrup Suggestions - High quality & reasonably priced

Noah's carries raw maple from Ont: 8.99/lb in the milk section. They also carry organic pre packaged versions (mostly canadian) and all decently priced. I know there is a vendor @ the Green Barns Market @ st. clair, that carries maple from a growers co-op. Loblaws also carries PC organic grade "b" hope that helps!

Hakka cuisine in Toronto?

Last nite Partner + I, ate THE most delicious hakka-indian food on the danforth.
A sort of desolate part of the strip, we stumbled across a tiny little restaurant where a man was cooking right in the window with a huge wok and lots of chilis.
We went in and they were so incredibly friendly. We ate CHILI chicken w/ gravy, manchurian paneer, and Hakka CHow Mein and finished with homemade saffron tapioca pudding.
Owner is guyanese indian, chef is hakka from tibet/india. Chef came out and spoke with us at length. Everything was unbelievably good, everything made super fresh, we ate very well for 30 $ . We live across the city, but I am already planning a return in the next 2 weeks. really incredible great chow find..

Best Thai Restos in Toronto...

Best Thai Food: a highly contentious toronto subject, but must say Sorn Thai, actually owned and operated by a thai family North of Eglinton. everything is authentic and amazing. need i say more?

Flaky Tart - new on Mt Pleasant

I just wanted to say now that we live @ yonge and eglinton, this will be our go to for pies, and homemade sort of desserts. we had a pie (apple and raz) last nite, and it was perfect. Not sweet but fruit sweet. perfect flaky pastry.
recommended (highly).

Worst in Toronto

i must concur. some of worst tdot meals began with spring rolls. the food oh the food..................(and the slightly better but highly deficient service)

Fresh Tacos!

casa mariachi, st. clair west ( a bit west of bathurst). mexican owned, super fresh and cheap.
tuesday is 2 for 1. i like the pastor and chorizo myself.

Best Thai Restos in Toronto...

enough said. i would rather eat nothing than eat at spring rolls and one is on the corner of my street.

Bloor Street Diner: Are they still good?

I agree with the negative review via Sarah Cat. i have a certain family member who lives across the street and am monthly subjected to eating brunch here b/c of the supposed convenience for other family coming in from the 905. terrible food. never had an issue with service.

Good brunch around Yonge and Eglinton, Toronto?

Boom near ave rd. was very disapointing. heard good things via blogto but it sucked. cold food, small portions, not tasty. service was good and pleasant. did not like the coffee either.
i'd rather go to Mars where service is hit or miss and the food is slightly expensive, but delicious (for what it is).

Butters at Metro, Organic Meadows at $9.19/lb? Is it better?

OrganicMeadow Butter is our go to butter if we haven't had time to grab something from the Market or one of our Reg Organic stores. It's decent butter not amazing though. Dairy prices in canada are pricey however they are justified in terms of quality and actual farmer compensation. We have tight finances and still somehow buy 2 glass jars of 1 & 2 % of harmony organic. we find it worth it. although all milk in canada is growth hormone free. that's why canadians are not yet giants like americans. LOL;)

Dinner Recommend Needed for Tmr Night!!!

LOL. strangely enough i was thinking of going to Torito myself. Gio Ranna was in my top 10 as well;)! thanks guys!

Dinner Recommend Needed for Tmr Night!!!

PS also wanted to mention- partner n i can't stand anywhere overly trendy or hipster, and no rude service. I can handle slow, relaxed or even brisk, detached service IF the food is worthwhile. No pretentious wannabe actor waiter type places please;) lol and thanks

Dinner Recommend Needed for Tmr Night!!!

Hi Chowhounds!

This is the brief: 2 of my closest friends just returned from a month in Hong Kong and have invited partner & i to dinner tommorow night. They know i am a wannabe-foodie so they have put the resto choice on me. Obviously while I would love to go for Chinese food, they were in HK so that's out. So is sushi, viet, and all other Asian cuisine. The trouble is partner and i eat mostly Asian food!! (lol) We need somewhere young, good-great food, a bit noisier (b/c we'll be a bit noisy ourselves) mid-price range. We are willing to ttc basically anywhere. Somewhere with character and not dressy, but not cheap eats either. My gfs aren't that adventurous when it comes to ethnic food so altho Ethiopian and Peruvian would be great, those wouldn't be optimum choices. Thinking college/queen street area but leslieville/yonge&eglington/front street are just as good. if the food is organically minded or locally sourced that is a plus but not required.
I appreciate ANY and ALL recommends!
thanks CH!

st. clair west

wanted to mention 'Barrio Fiesta' is the name of the filipino market that makes the best halo halo around.

Korea town ideas?

inoodle or joon's.
amazing ramen-soba-bimbimbop or korean noodles with unknown red sauce.
there is also the walnut cake shop with their walnut cakes (lol) and red bean cakes.
also there is a good korean-chinese that has some good meat dishes and crispy rice soup.

Best Falafel In Toronto

We're still trying the eating around the 'hood thing. We finally tried Mediteranean Grill Just south of st. clair on yonge 2 days ago. amazing schwarma.organically/locally sourced meat.maybe the best i've had in the city. as well their falafels are amazing and cheap. crisp not oily, flavourful and light. partner n i can get 2 sandies and 2 drinks for lunch for less than a 12. amazing place. the owner's son is a character. but it rocks. when we move in august will make the trip back up to get these.

Is there ANY good places to eat breakfast in TORONTO?

breakfast @ four seasons is not quality at all. the croissants are stale and the service slow. i've had tons of breks there and none been anywhere near decent.

Where to get frisee lettuce?

check the farmers market today @ st. lawrence. failing that, i know there is organic frisee @ harvest wagon but it's overpriced.

Crème fraîche in Toronto

they had a table at our tiny little farmers market at st. clair/wynchwood last week, and we purchased creme fraiche and 2 cheeses- 1 wine soaked, 1 goat. unbloody believably good.

New street food?

if they had cendol i would be eating it everyday no matter where in the city i have to go. i already eat way too much halo halo... often find myself doing a chinatown run in the summer for coconut with the top cut off.
i wish some enterprising vietnamiese resto owner would do satay on charcoal with fish sauce.

New street food?

its all about the sawdust.
we ate ice kacang and shave ice with red bean tons as kids and my mum would have a heart attack about all the germs in the sawdust...good times ;)

Is there ANY good places to eat breakfast in TORONTO?

love this bobbywham!

Who has the best Produce in Kensington Market?

totally agree. we buy bread from pain perdu. just visited the green barn farmers market at wynchwood n st. clair, bought 3 local cheeses. we shop at JLB the pinoy market for a bunch of things.

Who has the best Produce in Kensington Market?

We were in kensington yesterday and this is what i have to say: i am a huge believer in local and organic produce. as well as small business. there ARE some exceptional food stands in the market at least one for fruit, organic and misc. veg, where the quality is quite amazing. there are also some low quality vendors who sell nearly rotten food. Ken is great for artisanal bread, coffee, and various ethnic things (and bulk). are there other artisanal shops in the city comparable or better? yes in fact during the winter we get CSA delivery from plan b. and i do a lot of produce shopping at organics on bloor, as well as four theives (harvest wagon and such) but to say that ken is for nostalgia and tourists is totally incorrect. And pearl is right, the beauty of the market is that u have a lot of choice and many of the produce vendors genuinely care for their product and buy more exotic things (like beautiful blood oranges which we ate with scallops and argula). the only problem i have with the food terminal is that its not local, but we also live in canada and that in itself limits the range of diverse produce one is able to buy. if i lived in Hawaii i'd be 100% local but in toronto i settle for 50% local and 100% small business. that's just my 2 cents.
