Breakfast Spots - South Calgary

A good friend of mine and I go for breakfast on the weekend every few weeks. Usually she drives up to the downtown area and we hit up the usual spots, but I like to return the favour and drive down south so she doesn't have to come all the way uptown.

Problem is, I don't know of any good spots down in that neck of the woods, and we usually just end up going to Cora's in McKenzie Towne.

Any good recommendations? Hidden Gems?

Smashburger Coming to YYC

Went to Smashburger this weekend with a few fellow burger fanatics. I had the big Calgary burger. The patty was obviously fresh, and quite tasty, but the sauteed onions dominated the flavour of the burger, which I wasn't a big fan of. I should have just gone with the plain cheeseburger, or maybe made my own. The butterfinger milkshake was pretty tasty, and the chilli cheese fries were average at best. Wasn't a huge fan of the small, skinny fries.

The biggest put-off was the service. We were in there for about an hour from start to finish, and we only waitied in line for 5 mins tops. The place was busy, but I've seen Five Guys twice as busy with half the wait time. They clearly need to work on their expediency, or hire a few more kitchen peeps. It's a new place so I'll give them a pass for now...but I'm not exactly going to be racing up there again. I'll try them again down the road if I happen to be in the neighbourhood.

SAIT-Bakery items

It indeed still exists. It's located in the John Ware building, which is the same building that houses the Four Nines cafeteria and the Highwood restaurant. The selection does vary, and I recommend going earlier in the day if possible, as the shelves are quite empty by day's end. Not only can you get great baked goods and great prices, they have a selection of meats and deli products as well.

Fuze on Fourth - Calgary

It has unfortunately closed. I went to Towa for some sushi last week and Fuze was shut down.

Calgary Restaurant's for Wedding Reception??

Saltlik should fit your budget and your group size. The figure that Merry113 quoted of $1500 sounds right. We rented it out for a buddy's stag party one night about 4 years ago, and between about 10-15 of us we only ended up having to spend about $100 each. I was pretty sure it was somewhere in the $1000-1500 range.

I've never been in Teatro...but I would expect them to be somewhat pricey for a group affair.

JoJo's BBQ - Calgary

Awesome. Thanks for that info. Smokee Lee's served up some great stuff. Shame she's not running anything right now.

JoJo's BBQ - Calgary

Is this JoJo by any chance the same gal that ran the little BBQ shack in the parking lot next to Local 522? If not, anyone know what happened to her after that shack closed down? She made one heck of a brisket there.

Craft beer Market, Calgary....What a disappointment

I agree totally. Logistical hiccups are somewhat excusable on an opening weekend....but the stuff described by the OP is just plain unacceptable, period.

YYC - Hamburger bun help needed

Oh. My. God. Glamogran Cheese-bun Burgers. How have I not thought of this before now? *drool*

Craft beer Market, Calgary....What a disappointment

Wow....that whole beer debacle is just terrible. I've heard horror stories about the service at this place on opening weekend, but I chalked it up to "opening weekend jitters". However, from reading your reviews, it sounds like it was more due to sheer ignorance & stupidity.

Anyone have any idea who the ownership group is behind this place?

Calgary Restaurant/Pub Needed for 90 Person Wedding Reception

If you're looking for an outdoor/big patio, maybe talk to West Restaurant in the Scotiabank Building downtown. They have officially opened their 15,000 square foot patio on the +45 level...perhaps they'd be able to do something for you.

Saltlik also has two private areas available for buyouts. The upstairs room is a former nightclub (Skybar) and it's quite spacious, so you'll have lots of room (as a matter of fact, with only 80-90 people the upper room might be too big). The downstairs one is much cozier. I forget what their official capacity is down there (we looked at it for a company xmas party a while back...I think it's 90-100?) but is has a pool table in the lounge area, dining room, and dedicated bar...and their minimums are actually very reasonable...around $1000. We did book it out for a buddy's stag night a few years ago....and they treated us very well.

**EDIT: Just saw that you said you were looking for NW spots...so the downtown locations might not suit your needs.

Stone Hill restaurant is kinda barely in the NW (Harvest Hills), but it's VERY big. Accirding to their website they can accommodate 100+ ( http://stonehillrestaurant.com/ ), and I have a couple friends that swear by this place, as they live just down the street from it. I've never been in there myself.

Calgary Groupons: Anyone use them?

I've bought quite a few of these but have yet to use any. Has anyone uncovered any tips or tricks, or perhaps anything that is important to know before going in to use one of these deals?

So far I've bought one for Beckham's on Centre St, one at Voodoo Lounge on 16th, one for the new Studio 82, and one for Double 0 pizza.

Best Caesars in YYC

Awesome guys...loving the suggestions. Keep em comin' :)

YYC - 4th Spot

Hey folks. Just wanted to take a quick second and apologize for creating what appears to be a biased review of this joint. Yes, my friend works prep in the kitchen, and I should have left it at that. My review was honest, but I can see how it can be misconstrued as me acting as a pitchman for a friend's place of employment. I can assure you that was not my intent, but feel free to take my words with a grain of salt...I understand. I really like this site, and I don't want to undermine the integrity they have worked so hard to establish.

One thing I can report (just relaying factual information here, not offering an opinion), is that they have a special section of the Pizza menu dedicated to the old Karouzo's pizza favourites. He said that they brought in a bunch of the old kitchen staff from the original resto and tried their best to recreate their classics. Keep in mind I have not tried them, nor did I ever eat at the original Karouzo's....so I'll stop right there.

YYC - 4th Spot

OK, this place is definitely open. Their official opening was this past Friday.

As for the sandwich I was talking about...I was close. It's called the Fat Boy Club. It's a traditional club sandwich, that uses whole chicken breasts...but those chicken breasts are stuffed with bacon & cheese. So it's almost like a Chicken Cordon Bleu club sammy :)

Best Caesars in YYC

Yeah, forgot to add Caesar's to the list...I was a little tired when I made the initial post.

YYC - 4th Spot

A friend of mine was hired to work prep in the kitchen. They didn't have an opening date set in stone, but I think it is open now (I can confirm this with him).

From what he has told me the menu should be quite good. He did mention the burgers are huge, and that there was one sandwich on the menu that is really good (from what I remember of the descritption it involved bacon, cheese & possibly deep-frying) ;)

Best Caesars in YYC

I realize that this is Chowhound, not Boozehound...but I'm pretty certain that you Calgary foodies can help me out on this one.

A couple friends and I came up with the idea of going on a "Caesar Crawl". Basically just hopping from bar to bar trying out each one's Caesars.

I think for historical purposes we would probably start it at the Westin, and then move around from there. I'm looking for recommendations as to what might be good places. So far I know we will hit up the Laurier Lounge for their Tequila & Beef Jerky Caesar...that's about all I got so far.

They're opening a second location @ Edmonton Trail & 16th Ave NE....in the complex that houses the Trans Canada Liquor Store.

Calgary: All You Can Eat Week?

You're a good man, Scary Bill :)

Calgary: All You Can Eat Week?

I remember posing this idea to my buddies a while ago, but I never pieced it all together. The challenge was simple: hit up a different all you can eat special every night of the week. This would likely just be a Monday to Friday thing...but I suppose I could get really risky and make this a 7 day challenge

I'm hoping maybe you guys can help fill in the days for me & give me some alternative ideas.

Monday:
-AYCE Ribs at the Palomino.

Sunday:
-AYCE Crab@ Booker's

I'm sure I could fill in some of the days with AYCE Sushi, AYCE wings somewhere, or a trip to Bolero...but I'm looking to see what other daily AYCE deals are out there. Chinese buffets are out of the question :P

Chili Peppers - YYC

Can anyone recommend some grocery/food stores where I can get some chili peppers?Don't need a whole lot...I have a Chili recipe that calls for 4 of them, and I'm doubling the recipe.

An East-Indian co-worker recommended Fruiticana and OK General Food store in the NE as two possible locations, but I thought I'd check on here also.

The BottleHouse Beer Parlour - Calgary (Kensington)

How has nobody called you out for this horrible gaffe yet?? It's Lando....not Boba :P

YYC Holy Smoke Bbq

When Oxford did the official "unveiling" of their rennovation plans for the Bow Valley Square complex, these guys catered the event in the lobby with breakfast burritos. One of the options was a beef brisket burrito, and dear GOD it was amazing. I went back about 5 times...I think I ended up eating damn near 10 of those bad boys (they were fairly small).

Calgary's Best "Hidden Gems"

Oooh, that sounds awesome. Exactly the kind of hidden gem I was hoping people would post in here :)

Calgary's Best "Hidden Gems"

Forgot about Ogden Pizza & Pub. I drive by that place all the time in the summer, as Ogden Rd is my backroads route down to my softball games. I've always wondered what that place was like.

Calgary's Best "Hidden Gems"

I think it's safe to say that everyone here has been to a few places that ended up being diamonds in the rough, so to speak. I'm referring to the type of place that, upon first sight, you wouldn't even think of eating there because it either looks too run down, or maybe too outdated. But, upon cautiously eating there, you find out the food is absolutely amazing. Kinda falls under the old "you can't judge a book by its cover" adage.

Usually you end up going to these places upon a recommendation from a friend or colleague.

What sort of places have you guys found that would fall under this category?

Opening in Calgary?

If they're adding a bunch more restaurants as part of the Chinook expansion, I'm never going to want to go there ever again once it's all done. Unless they have added a massive amount of new parking underneath the expansion section, that place is permanently going to be a zoo, and not just around Xmas.

Opening in Calgary?

I'm not saying all places are doomed, it just seems as though there is an overwhelming preference for places down on the Red Mile versus Stephen Ave (or thereabouts). If this place ends up being as great as it's expected to be, that could revive the core nightlife a little bit.

Chowhound iPhone App?

I'm just curious as to whether or not this idea has ever been tossed around on here before? Did a quick search but didn't see anything
