Looking for lunch after the Met

Heading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art early Saturday. Any place to get a good burger or pulled pork sandwich in area? We don't mind walking a bit and if there are some good beers to wash it all down that would be a fine incentive.

What's your favorite snowed-in comfort food?

Spaghetti and meatballs. Maybe a roast chicken and rice with gravy. Wish I could somebody to have a snowbal fight with!

Dinner suggestions for a mixed bag

Need dinner for 6. Two are vegetarians. Some love a good steak. One lives for nice fresh seafood. Thinking Union Square Cafe perhaps if that gives you idea on price/location. Would prefer to stay below 34th St. and not totally break the piggy bank.

One couple's way around NOLA

Just back from a quick trip to NOLA. We live near NYC and love the restaurant scene here but NOLA is a special place and we love visiting. This trip (arrived Saturday) we got to Mr. B's for the great gumbo ya ya and bbq shrimp. How great are those dishes?!?! I could live on that sauce. For dinner Saturday we went to Coop's Place. Jambalaya supreme for me. Fried chicken for the misses. Both outstanding. Sunday was as good a day of eating as I can remember having. Cafe Du Monde to start the day. Jazz brunch at Muriel's and then dinner at Emeril's. All good. Loved Muriel's brunch. Pricey but very friendly and very good food. Monday we had breakfast at Mother's and then waddled around the Garden Dist.for a few hours. Eventually went back to the FQ and had some oysters at Desire and they were great. Some very serious cocktail sauce in that place. I didn't feel the need do any improvising. Finally, dinner at Irene's. Being from NY it was hard to convince myself that Italian was a good choice. I can get that here but I can't get New Orleans style cooking. But Irene's was good. The service was wonderful. Food was first rate. No complaints at all. Thanks to everybody for making us feel welcome and thanks to all who contribute here for helping us plan the trip. I never would have found Coop's without you and I probably would have passed on Emeril's if not for all the "you gotta go" comments I saw on the Board. Next trip...Commander's! Cheers!

Cast iron on glass top stove?

I love my cast iron skillet and we can't get a gas range where we live. So right now we have an electric range with the coils. If we get a glass top range will my cast iron mess up the top?

Group dining etiquette poll

1. I don't feel it's fair to make non-drinkers pay for those of us who like to have a few. Offer to make it fair. If everyone had at least one drink split it.
2. Getting the invitees to pay is probably a trick that would only work once. I can't imagine anyone doing that. It sounds crazy.
3. Yes
4. Seems okay but I tend to just round up. You're usually talking a couple of bucks and think people get too hung up on tipping.

Gordon Ramsay's Live Nightmare

Glad it wasn't just me wondering what was up with the G Man. Even his voice didn't sound right. Had to be just a case of nerves.

steakhouses in long island

Brooks and Porter in Merrick has good food. Farther east in West Sayville is 21 Main. Not as good as Teller's IMO but close.

Group dinner - Nassau-Suffolk border

We are planning a special birthday for a co-worker. He loves good chow but budget must remain part of the equation. What's a good place for 15 or so people? We want something nice. A sit down dinner. Not a pub or a chain. The office is in Melville so we can head in any direction. No cuisine considered off limits. Thanks!

New York's First Sonic Opening in Kingston!

All those commercials have been driving me nuts. Why do they advertise so much in NY when we can't eat there? But I finally got to try one out in Reno last year. My fav part was that they bring the food to your car on roller skates. Not sure how that's gonna work in Kingtson when there's a foot of snow on the ground but never mind that. The burgers a good. I maybe prefer 5 guys but it's close. The drinks are good. Onions rings - not good.

What are you a stubborn purist about?

I was 20 years old the first time I saw mustard on a burger (McDonald's Poughkeepsie, NY) and I took it back. It's funny because I grew up on Long Island less than 100 miles from Pkpsie and I felt like I had traveled to a different country. Still prefer ketchup only but I repect the local traditions on stuff like that..

Kentucky Derby on Long Island

It's been years since I lived in the area but Sweeney's (back at the original locale) used to be a blast on Derby Day. So I would second GCGuy's opinion. The Kentucky Derby Calcutta was one of the great traditions.

What's good in Fort Lauderdale?

We have one night to enjoy Fort Lauderdale while waiting for a cruise ship. Haven't booked a room yet but that's minor compared to the food issue. We like casual places where the food and people are the attractions. If there's a fun little joint near the beach where we could get a nice fresh piece of grilled fish that would be perfect. Any suggestions?

Bon Chon Chicken - downhill alert?

Went to Bon Chon for the first time ever on Jan. 2 (5th Ave. Loc) based on the raves I've seen on this board. Going there is a strange experience. Odd music. Menu seems a little strange. But the chicken was first rate. Spicey. Hot out of the fryer. Nice meaty pieces. If it's heading downhill you coulda fooled me.

Lunch Buffet in Hong Kong?

The Sheraton on Nathan Rd. has a restaurant on 17th F. Don't know if they do a lunch up there or how many $$$ go with it but the view of the harbour is great from up there. Happy New Year.

Good chow East 50's

Meeting some friends on 2nd & 51st for a year end gathering. We do this every year but we never find anything really good to eat in that neighborhood. What would please a chow hound? Not looking for fancy or expensive. Italian or French bistro would work. We can certainly walk a few blocks if we have to.

Been to the Strip House?

Some college buddies and I are having annual Christmas steak dinner at the Strip House (12th St. bet 5th and University). Two questions: what are the best sides at that place and what's a good place to meet for a beer or 3 before dinner? As I said, we're college buddies but note that Jimmy Carter was president when we were in that college so nothing too frat house at this stage in the game please. Thanks!

Pie on North Fork

Love Briermere! Grab a pumpkin square and a peach slush. (Like biting into the best peach you ever had.) As for the pies we always go with a strawberry rhubarb for Thanksgiving and one of the cream pies. Blueberry cream is my fav.

EAST PATCHOGUE?

Check out Pera Bell Food Bar on W. Main St. in Patchogue. I've been in there 5 or 6 times and the food is always good. Nice specials. Real nice burgers if you want something easy. Fine mojitos too. They do a pork chop that is really good. If the short ribs are on the specials board grab 'em. The place is small wtih a bar up front and small dining area in the back. Not fancy and the prices are fair for sure.
