Kid Friendly Japanese Recommendations- near Financial district
Quick weekend trip to the city, staying in the Financial District, looking for casual Japanese restaurant recommendations. Ramen and shabu-shabu would be my preferences, but something with a variety (teriyaki, etc...) would be better to accommodate the SO. We don't mind taking the subway or a taxi, but closer is better when you have a little one in tow.
Bridal Shower Brunch Recommendations
Planning a bridal shower for about 15-20ppl on a Saturday. Looking for any recommendations in the DC and Mont. Co area, private or semi-private room would be nice but not a deal breaker, looking to keep costs managable (entrees $15-20/pp). Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks!
Help with Prime Rib Roast
I'm cooking a prime rib roast this Christmas, what is the internal temperature that I need to reach to get a medium cooked roast. I like my meat medium rare, but my guests are not too fond of bloody meat, so I don't want to under cook the meat to my liking. What should the meat thermometer read when I take the roast out of the oven before resting takes place and the carry over cooking raises the temperature?
Birthday cake recommendations
Thanks for the Costco suggestions. While I love Costco cakes, they are very limited on designs... looking for a cake that can be customized. Something with fondant decor would be a nice find. Definitely going to look into the other recommendations.
Birthday cake recommendations
Looking for bakery recommendations for a child's birthday cake. I am not looking for cakes from Safeway nor do I need Ace of Cake priced cakes. Looking for something that is tasty and artful at a reasonable cost. Location in the Bethesda/ Rockville vicinity is a plus.
Recommendations for caterers for a 1st birthday party
Looking for restaurant/ caterers in the Rockville/ Bethesda area for a casual baby birthday party. Looking for a caterer that will do a small lunch buffet for 30-40ppl, nothing formal or fancy. Maybe BBQ or some type of kid friendly themed menu.
Brunch buffet in Honolulu for 50ppl
Planning a celebration in January, looking for Sunday brunch recommendations for a group of 50ppl, probably needs to be a buffet for 50ppl.
Soft Shell Crabs in DC
Family visiting in town, looking for soft shell crabs in the District or Bethesda area. Any recommendations welcome!
3 days in Paris
my husband and I tried for Chez L'ami Jean lunch today, food was fabulous! It is 9pm now and I still can not eat dinner. Their pre-fix menu is 3 courses for 35 Euros. If you don't read or speak any French, this is probably the way to go. There is a blond lady with short hair that works there and speaks very good English and will help you translate the menu. As soon as you get to Paris, have your hotel concierge call for reservations, as there are only about a dozen tables, it's quite hard to get in. Highlights, the skate wing and braised beef main entrees are excellent, the lemon mousse dessert was devine. There were lots of additional dishes that looked great, but as I was not able to read the menu, we stuck with the pre-fix items. Enjoy! We are trying Les Papilles in a few days, another tough reservation to get.
Did I just get unlucky at Scarpetta?
What are the menu prices like? I'm headed there this weekend, and interested to know if it's worth the hype. If the price point is not too over the top we'll keep the reservations, but based on your review, if the prices are outrageous, we may reconsider.
Food Gifts from the area
Just moved to D.C. and looking for omiyagi, small gifts to take home to family in Hawaii. What are some regional food favorites that would be easy to pack?
Looking for Pub's Virginia peanuts, does anyone know where they can be purchased in the D.C. area?
Need recommendations for anniversary dinner
Coming to Manhattan in a few weeks to celebrate our anniversary. Would like suggestions for a nice restaurant that doesn't require reservations made 2 months in advance. Price range- main entrees about $30-$50, cuisine- New American or Italian, atmosphere- trendy, neighborhood- some place that we can walk to a bar or club down the street. Thanks in advance!
I need some info re fresh pineapple
If the brown areas are on the outer part of the flesh, they are normally just bruising or over ripeness. I would just cut off the brown areas and the rest of the pineapple should be fine, especially if it smelled OK.
Where are they hiding the garlic NOT made in China?
Garlic from China tends to be a lot drier in consistency as well when chopped up. I just buy whole heads from the local American supermarket. I find that the garlic from the farmers market does not last as long in my pantry, it tends to rot rapidly.
Dungeness Crab Season yet?
Headed out to San Francisco this weekend, was wondering if dungeness crabs are in season? What is the price per pound at the Asian markets?
Sei & Central
I tried Sei about 2 weeks ago, and I don't know why I didn't realize that it's a small plates restaurant.
Food is not bad, but not very filling. Their fish & chips sushi roll is not bad, but I don't know if i'd order it again at $10 an order. Toto scallion roll was excellent. Chicken wings, odd thing to eat at such a nice restaurant, but they were very tasty. Avoid the garlic shrimp dish, although I don't see it posted on the online menu today, maybe they removed it. It was 3 shrimps butterflied, shell on. They must have been overcooked, because it was impossible to remove the shell. The manager later came over and told us that we were supposed to eat the shell with the rest of the shrimp. Asian pork buns were overly salty and inedible.
On the flip side, cocktails are very innovative and tasty.
For dessert they served us a black sesame ice cream, delicious!
Buttermilk Powder?
Powered buttermilk can be purchased at Super Wal-mart, it's usually in the baking aisle.
Making puff pastry from scratch?
The PF packages that I purchase are always made with margarine, is there an all butter version from PF? I despise that they use margarine, I will have to try the TJ brand.
Pillsbury thin crust pizza dough in a can!
At what stage can you freeze the dough? Do you let it rise 1 time first?
Fun with Foie Gras
I recently received a can of foie gras from France, what can I do with that?
Help with holiday chocolate making
You can order them from Spun Sugar in Berkeley in 1lb packages, and have them shipped.
English Toffee question
I made a macadamia nut toffee twice this season with great results. The recipe that I used has Karo and baking soda in it, brought the sugar mixture up to 285, results: crisp and not bendable. I also poured the candy onto a silpat mat which makes for easy release and cleanup!
Fresh Recipe Ideas Needed
thanks, the pork recipe sounds delish. Would love non-pasta shrimp dish recipes as well
Fresh Recipe Ideas Needed
I am cookind dinner this weekend for a few guests. I have pork tenderloins and jumbo shrimp in the freezer. I usually marinate the tenderloins in garlic and rosemary and grill, and the shrimp are usually used for a shrimp scampi pasta. I need some fresh new ideas, will probably only cook one of the proteins for this meal.
Beijing, New Years Eve
Heading to Beijing this winter and spending American new years eve there. Looking for suggestions on events to check out there.
Dinner guest requesting chicken
Can I use dried marjoram for this recipe? I can't seem to find the fresh at the supermarket. Do I cut the amount down? Is it just as good or should I choose another recipe?
Help with holiday chocolate making
I took a chocolate class a while back at a chocolate shop, and oddly enough we used tempered chocolate coating for molded chocolate. Because the shell is thin, the taste is really not that noticiable, and very user friendly. Taste your chocolate coating chips, some taste better than others. I previously used Guittard coating apeals, but found that a brand sold at the hobby shop tasted better. Use a good quality chocolate for the filling though. Usint the chocolate coating apeals prevents the blooming and issues with keeping the chocolate at the perfect temperature.
ISO: non old-school sweet potato dish
Last year friends of mine made a butternut squash casserole. I have the basic ingredients, but tweek to your liking. Smash cooked squash or sweet potatoes, season with lots of butter, S&P, etc. Put 1/2 the mixture in a casserole, place a layer of brie, cover with remaining squash/ sweet potato. Top with sliced almonds, bake until golden and bubbly. It was absolutely delish!
Cocktail Menu help
I've invited a bunch of co-workers for cocktails and appetizers, most of them have pretty basic tastes. What should I make? I love to cook ethnic dishes but I think it may be too different for them. Share your favorite all American appetizer ideas.
