Whole Fried Catfish in/near Hollywood?

My wife is craving the above...any suggestions?

# 3 nights at Sunset Plaza

Wilma: yinyangdi has the right idea...Yatai is within walking distance (a short walk, in fact), and is excellent food and service.

Jian Korean BBQ

My wife and I went, and were kind of surprised by how much we liked the food.

Pros: 1) The service needed some polish, but was friendly. 2) The Bul Gol Gi and spicy pork were delicious, and the mushrooms platter was generous. 3) The cocktails were well-made, well-balanced, and reasonably priced, given the location.

Cons: 1) the price was kind of expensive for the portions. 2) the server had to keep going to the kitchen and the bar to get answers to our questions. 3) The panchan was (very) limited, unfortunately. But when we wanted some more, the server was quick to replace. 4) The music was BLARING at 6pm when the place was empty. I understand later in the evening when the bar is jammed to turn the music up, but it was too much for the three tables in the dining room. 5) the Bibimbap wasn't in the stone bowl...just on a plate. None of that delicious texture that comes with the hot stone bowl that I was accustomed to.

Overall: Not a bargain, but good enough when I don't feel like driving to K-town.

R.I.P. Azami as we knew it...

Damn! Couldn't have said it better myself...or maybe I could have in the OP!

R.I.P. Azami as we knew it...

Niki told me and wifey that it was just too much work and not enough payoff. She worked Azami for years, and it just wasn't rewarding. Her parents own the seafood purveyor where she is now located, and she lives out there, too, so the commute wasn't very fun. The new owners made her a nice offer, and she took it knowing that she could focus on "chef's table" service.

I am having trouble with the same problem.

Chowhound email?

Is there any way for me to contact the Chowhound team that is NOT on a message board? Ideally, email, but phone number woul dbe fine, too.

Thanks! Love the site...

loteria goes hollywood

Had a great lunch there yesterday...well, partly great, anyway...

Have loved the Farmer's Market location for a long time, and took mom in for the sit-down version of Loteria.

Empty dining room...literally, only Mom and me at 11:30am...server was quick to approach the table and offer drinks. Aguas frescas all around, please!

We also ordered the queso fundido with mushrooms to get us going. Drinks came soon, fundido soon after. We ordered two dishes: Mom had 3 sopes with one of the chicken preparations, and I ordered the burrito with habenero pork. Not three minutes after we'd ordered it, the server brough the dishes to the table. We had each only taken a bite of the appetizer, and I guess that's a riskj you run when the kitchen is waiting for something, ANYTHING to do. But it also seems like the server should have thought about this, especially with no one else in the room.

That said, burrito was super tasty. The sopes seemed a little stale, but the filling was great.

The room is clean, open, and really welcoming. There is no sign on the door, so we drove by it twice before seeing the entrance. But the server and host were very friendly, and the food was just as good as it should have been (except maybe the sopes).

Looking forward to going back in a couple of weeks when some of the hiccups have been ironed out.

Anniversary dinner

Maybe l'Opera?

Restaurant at the Getty

Interesting Scotch Recommendations

Have you had the Charbay whiskey? It's about $300 a bottle, but what I've read of it is AMAZING...Someday my lotto numbers will come in.

Charcoal: Reviewed

I might actually go back, order a similar meal, and pay in pennies!

Crab Fest 2008 @ The Hungry Cat

I was there, too, with wife and Mom (her birthday) and Dad.

Being from Virginia, and growing up with Blue Crab, we were really excited about Crab Fest.

We had a great time, even though we were seated on an outdoor table (the inside was full) and the heat was OPPRESSIVE.

To be frank, we thought that the whole crabs were good, but not great. Every single other dish, however, was FANTASTIC.

The salad of tomatoes, onions, provolone, and light vinaigrette was perfect on a hot day. The grilled corn on the cob with paprika butter (and the Old Bay Seasoning I added) was as good as any I've ever had, and the strawberry cornbread shortcake was delicious.

But the crab soup was an A+. When the server placed my bowl in front of me, and it was steaming, I was certain that I wouldn't be able to eat morethan a bite or two. But, sweating and drinking beer, all four of us drained those soup bowls. It was terrific.

The star of the day, however, was the softshell crab sandwich. I've probably eaten softshells 30 times in restaurants, and this was, hands-down, the BEST softshell I've ever had. Honestly, I felt like the $50 pp price tag was worth the soup and sandwich alone. Everything else was (very nice) cherries on the top.

As a side note: Of the 5-6 times I've eaten at HC, our service today was hands down the best we've had there...

Suzanne Goin was there, chatting with Nancy Silverton...pretty cool.

Trendy, Hollywoodish, reasonable place for visiting 13 year old from KY

Uwink at Hollywood and Highland seems like it would be great for a 13 year old girl from Kentucky, but I don't know about the rest of the group...

Anyone going to Crab Fest @ Hungry Cat next weekend?

I have my reservations (never been before)...what should I expect?

Jian Korean BBQ

Has been open for two weeks now.

Haven't heard much, but what I have heard hasn't been good (aside from a free tasting review up on CH)...I am going to give it a month or so to settle in before I give it a shot.

Happy hour in Burbank that won't kill me - impossible request, it's challenge!!

Minibar has been closed for at least a couple months

Yellowtail Collar

Azami Sushi on Melrose has Yellowtail collar that is perfection.

Jian Korean BBQ

Called Jian yesterday, and they said May 26th is the new "hard" opening.

No Salt at Rustic Canyon?

I had a similar experience, except I wasn't snide to the server.

Urasawa - World-Class Excellence in L.A.! [Review] w/ Pics

So does Urusawa include the gratuity in the $300 price, a la Mizutani or French Laundry? Because if it doesn't, backing out the gratuity from the French Laundry's $240 brings the food cost down to somewhere near $195 per person.

If urusawa includes gratuity, then the total of the food is around $250 per person, right?

Gonpachi

Went once, about two months ago, with my wife. The place is amazing looking.

The food...eh. We spent about $250 with drinks and tip, and left hungry and disappointed. The one exception was the mushroom yakitori, but it hardly seems like it's worth going there just for that. Even their vaunted soba noodles were nothing to write home about. We ordered the prix fixe, and then filled it in with some sushi, some yakitori, and the whole grilled fish, and none of it made we want to go back again, except maybe the architecture and garden.

Have you been to Yatai on Sunset? I know it's not as "fine" dining as Gonpachi, but they have many similar items, and everything I've had there is delicious.

Need a celebration dinner midway between Camarillo and Hollywood

We ended up going to King's Fish House. We had a very nice time, and with drinks and apps, it was noly $150 for four people. A very good value for pretty good food.

Thanks so much for the rec!

Need a celebration dinner midway between Camarillo and Hollywood

Oxnard will not work...We are all meeting from work, and in order to make it at any time resembling dinner time, we need more like Thousand Oaks-ish, I think...

too bad...looks like a cool place...thanks for the rec

Need a celebration dinner midway between Camarillo and Hollywood

Celebrating my first job in TV!

I want to take Mom and Dad out to celebrate...they will meet me halfway. Want to keep it around $200, if possible.

What have you got?

Thanks!

Vodka Watermelon Crisis (HELP!!!) [Moved from Los Angeles Area board]

This is a sweet-ass post.

Very nice...

One bottle of Stoli Elit...and One Problem...

It was a promo from my rep. But I am a scotch/tequila drinker, so its greatness was lost on me.

One bottle of Stoli Elit...and One Problem...

I know what you mean...and I am absolutely not one to go along with those "pricier is better" ideals...but everything I've read about this vodka is that it really delivers...Maybe not $65 worth, but exceptional.

What I ended up doing was having my bartender pour a chilled shot and had my Chef make a blini with smoked salmon and American Caviar (paddlefish roe)...It's a $30 amuse bouche. Let's see how it goes!

Has a chowhound done a vodka blind tasting? Post results please.

It was actually just a snarky post in response to a snarky post. Less pedantic than prissy.

Filipino Food @ Max's Restaurant in Glendale

There must be something wrong with my in-laws, then, because they swear that it's "just like home".
