dinner for 4 ideas...

Thanks guys for the ideas. I ended up making the soup, some rolls and a nice salad. And then I made apple crisp for dessert. Overall it all came out pretty good. I made some bacon bits for the garnish of the soup along with some shredded cheese. Everyone loved it and had seconds!

dinner for 4 ideas...

thanks..i think I'll throw some carrots, i think I'll skip the celery and put a few green beans in the soup instead. and then I think I'll do some light dinner rolls and a few cheeses.. Maybe the cheeses that I use in the soup to incorporate the flavor a bit more.
Either way, I'm gonna make some stock out of the ham bone and use some of the stock to cook the potatoes in and then reserve that for the soup. I think that'll get a good ham flavor in there.
And then apple crisp for dessert.

any ideas on wine selection?
Thanks for the ideas...

dinner for 4 ideas...

Ok...so we're having some friends over on Sunday. I am definitely making ham and potato soup (cream)
I'm not sure about:
should I put veggies in the soup or on the side
if i did in it would be: carrots and celery, corns, green beans..
if on the side: carrots or corn
Then, what do I serve with it? I know I'd add a salad.
I don't want to just do cold cuts...any ideas?

and dessert: i was thinking some apple crisp...other ideas?

Thanks!

beer noob tried Southern tier

I would totally agree that Ommegang and Southern Tier are different tastes. I was merely comparing that Ommegang has established its tastes while Southern Tier is still finding their niche in the beer world.
I enjoy both tastes for different reasons. They are both bold. But, if in an arm wrestling match between Ommegang and Southern Tier, Ommegang's strength would overrule.

beer noob tried Southern tier

yeah, overall, I think its a "good" beer. It definitely not the best out there. I don't think its as precise as Ommegang. But the taste is certainly good.

"Chicago Fried Chow Mein": What was it? Do I want to know?

Chicago style noodles - Deep fry. Loosen your bundle of noodles and lower all into a wok of hot oil. When noodles are light, crispy brown, use a big strainer and remove from oil & drain. Set aside. Place noodles in large serving platter few minutes before eating. Pour your prepared meat, vegetable, soy sauce & salt in gravy mixture over top of noodles.

i found this from: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060913130948AAE87ZE

I had also found some menus online for chinese restaurants that offer Chicago Chow Mein... Apparantly that means the noodles are deep fried...YUMMY!

So... I went to a friends house and he'd gotten Southern Tier Brewing Company. It was their raspberry wheat. To me it was a semiheavy taste. The raspberry flavor lightened it up a bit. Obviously, it was fruity.. There was a mild aftertaste, but it was good. It is a good all around beer.
I know this isn't the best review...but its a start...
oh and here's a link for anybody who wants it:

Do you use coupons at restaurants?

so don't use them. I'm just saying that most people if they have a coupon for someplace they like or someplace new, they're going to use it. When I'm cutting out coupons, I look at whether I would actually go to that place or not. If its a new place..I say sure, I'll try it. If I know I like the place, I'll use it.
If it is a place I don't go to, then I toss it. Its the same as food coupons. If I know I'm going to be buying it soon, I'll keep it. If not, it goes in the recycle bin...

U-bet syrup

I've had a few egg creams growing up. My grandparents are from NYC and they always talked about all the flavors they enjoyed. My grandpa will make mock ones with rootbeer and milk. I think once I get the U-bet and I'll try to find a good seltzer sprayer and surprise them with the stuff and we can make some. They'd really enjoy it! thanks guys...

U-bet syrup

I will keep that in mind...thanks!

U-bet syrup

yeah...I was on another forum and they were talking about egg creams and needing to us U-bet syrup. So I decided to see if I can get some. We'll prolly end up doing it online, we'll see. Thanks guys!

U-bet syrup

ok..so I'm from Buffalo NY. I have a friend visiting from NY. I was wondering where he can find U-bet syrup. I would like to try the flavors, I've heard that its really awesome stuff for egg creams. If anyone knows, let me know...thank you!

beer noob tried Ommegang

i'll keep that in mind with the philosophers...

Do you use coupons at restaurants?

who cares? a coupon is a coupon is a coupon...either you use it or you don't... I'm one that uses them. I don't care what restaurant it is. I don't care if its a mom + pop, a chain, a place that's prolly going under and using coupons to save... I don't have rules for when I'll use a coupon and when I won't. I just do it.

beer noob tried Ommegang

the weg's by us has a beer cooler..and aisle. You can walk into the cooler and look around. The Ommegang beer's are located on a dusty shelf in the corner and are perpetually on sale for $5 a bottle. Its a very good beer. Although, you can't get every type they offer. And there was no gift pack in our store. I'm sure Ommegang is not one of the most popular for Weg's....
PA is the same way with beer. We went into a grocery store once and asked where their beer aisle was and they said we'd have to go to a liquor store...

beer noob tried Ommegang

will do

i agree that wegman's is def. not the best place to go for the best price or the best beers. Sometimes you get a good deal, you just have to look... I didn't know they had wegman's in NJ...

Dieting Foodie??? (moved from General Topics)

i've lost 40 lbs. since last year...
I went on my own diet. I regulated how much I ate at meal time...i ate less throughout the day, I drank more milk (you need the calcium for your bones and it helps burn fat better)...took a daily vitamin. I still ate whatever I wanted, I just ate less of it. If I wanted dorritos, I'd eat a handful and be satisfied with it...
I call it the Putting down the fork, picking up the milk diet. That's what its about. Its better for me than any diet because it worked! It teaches self control and that's what a lot of people need to learn. You need to be able to say, I've had enough, I'm putting down the fork! it worked for me

Do you use coupons at restaurants?

Restaurants as stated before use coupons for various reasons. Generally it is to attract more people. I'm all for using coupons at any restaurant, whether I'm a regular or not. Although..I'm not really a regular at any one restaurant...
it doesn't matter to me what kind of restaurant it is. If they felt the need for a money saving coupon, I'll use it. Anyway, generally when people use coupons some feel compelled to spend more in other areas. I generally give more in tip just because the waitress has taken a cut pay for the coupon... she does the same amount of work, if not more...she (he) deserves the tip

beer noob tried Ommegang

Hmm...I'm going to keep that in mind. I liked the Ommegang. I'll be getting that gift pack too. Thanks, so where are you located that you have Wegmans?

beer noob tried Ommegang

I'm glad i live in NY. I'll be ordering some soon. It is really good stuff.

beer noob tried Ommegang

While I am a beer noob...maybe you should take a look at the pictures and pick out which one it is... Ommegang is also the first beer they made!

it was Ommegang

beer noob tried Ommegang

so... from the last thread someone said..try Ommegang.. before I got the chance to order some online my husband and I went to a friend's house. He is always trying new beers because the only one he likes is Guiness and he's always trying to find new ones. Well he found Ommegang at the local supermarket and decided to try it. I saw it and got really excited!
He had it in the fridge and I said that it needed to be cool, not cold. So, we let it sit with us through dinner and dessert until game time. (We play board games....Catan, heroscape, trilogy, etc.)
We poured some out between us all. When I first smelled it, it reminded me of something fruity. Not a super sweet fruit, but a deep fruit.. It was very aromatic. I smelled it and knew this was going to be good, and it smells like it has a big bite. So, I took my first swallow. It doesn't taste as fruity as it smells. It is a very hearty taste to it. It is in my opinion very smooth. It did have a slight sweet taste and then a kick. It is really good beer. I will definitely be trying the other kinds! I enjoyed every last drop of it. My friend, he said it was good, but wasn't changed by it. But, I loved it. My husband enjoyed it too.

Help complete (or comment on) my Italian dinner

The meal sounds good and even better with the changes...let us know how it comes out. When I do an italian dinner with the eggplant parm. I'll usually make that as the second course and have very light before and after. The roasted greens sound good with it all. Give it a variety of colors. and in the end, enjoy!
