Your pic for a lunch in Galveston
Benno's at 12th & Seawall. Local fare, blue crabs cooked all kinds of ways, soft-shell crabs, stone crab claws, indoor-outdoor.
Crabs in Galveston
Benno's on 12th & Seawall should have fresh crabs, cooked several ways. Get there early as they can run out.
Maryland Style Crab Cakes in Houston
as usual, Airline Seafood on Richmond is a good source. They do have crab cakes currently, but I'm not sure how "Maryland-style" they are.
10 BEST THINGS TO EAT IN HOUSTON
I just had some muy tasty cabrito tacos at La Michoacana Meat Mkt on So. Post Oak. Topped with fresh cilantro & onion, salsa on the table....good stuff.
New to Houston (from NYC) and looking for recs
b4-u-eat.com is good - so is

Best authentic mexican torta on West side of Houston?
try Mexico Deli on Dairy Ashford. They're from Mex City, have some creative tortas & home-made refreshments. Good stuff.
Oaxacan Style Taquerias - Houston
Thanks for the clarification, just got back from there for lunch.
The place is NOT Oaxacan, despite the name. I asked her what she has that's particularly Oaxacan - nothing. I did get 3 tacos (fajita, chicken, pork), same as you'd get at any other truck & they were tasty. No complaints about the quality - just nothing unique about the food menu options. It tasted really good as I ate the tacos CherryHurst Park, taking advantage of our lovely weather.
She does have a sign advertising champurrado - but she didn't have any.
I actually have been there before. It's about 100ft from Airline Seafood (great fish market, top quality stuff). I had been at Airline awhile back & stopped at the truck for a quick bite. Didn't note the name of the truck back then.
Oaxacan Style Taquerias - Houston
I went by Richmond/Mandell intersection today looking for your truck. Not there.....could it be somewhere else??
on trucks - behind Canino's is good (Bravo) so is the one on Gessner, north of LongPoint (in front of a restaurant). Run by an Argentino, very hot green salsa, excellent ground red salsa, terrific meats.
Homemade corn tortillas at the truck on Irvington near Cavalcade, by the car wash.
Good rotisserie chicken at the truck / school bus on far-east Harrisburg (been awhile, I hope it's still there).
Houston - need Third Ward lunch - veg-friendly!
Givral's will have veg-friendly stuff. Same for Kanomwan Thai (not far from UH).
SoCal to Orlando roadtrip on I-10--Good Eats??
as you leave San Antonio, you'll go a several miles to the town of Luling. It's just about 3-4 miles north of I-10. Stop in at City Market - it's a BBQ joint & one of the premier places in TX (it's on the left if you standing on the RR tracks facing the shops - there's another on the right which is not as good). There will be a line, but don't worry about it. You get your stuff in the back by the pits. Get some brisket, sausage links & ribs. No forks (which the sign will remind you!). Don't bother with any potato salad or slaw. You'll be happy.
SoCal to Orlando roadtrip on I-10--Good Eats??
Just east of downtown Houston, exit Lockwood, go 1 block north to Lyons Ave & take a right. Just over the RR tracks another block is Burt's Meat Mkt. They serve steam-table soul/creole food to go. Get some red beans/rice, gumbo, peach cobbler, greens, boudin, etc. Very cheap & very good.
[Hou] Crabs
as above.
Also today at Airline Seafood on Richmond Ave they had some soft-shell crabs ready for cookin'.
To-go in Houston
don't see my favorite listed....Burt's Meat Mkt on Lyons, soul/southern/creole to go only.
Frenchy's Fried chicken on Scott
Taqueria Laredo on Washington - Mex
Givral's on Milam - Vietnamese
a bit further out, but worth a mention is Hebert's Meat Mkt on Dairy Ashford - lunch to go only
BBQ in Houston
Goode Co. BBQ on Kirby (fairly close to downtown) can handle your crowd & they'll treat you right. Very professionally run place and knows how to treat a corporate client. You'll get mixed reviews on the BBQ itself from here, but other places might not be able to handle a crowd of 25 corporate out-of-towners.
Barbecue -- Mueller's and Cooper's
Last time at Cooper's, I got what the server called "steak". It was unbelievably incredible. Is that the same as what you're calling "prime rib"?
In for final four.. BBQ roadtrip..anyone open Sun?
Cooper's in Llano is open Sundays.
Wine Tasting in the Hill Country
Flat Creek is prettiest place & has good stuff.
Becker is consistently good wines across the board.
Comfort Cellars is awful.
Houston: Where to find veal bones?
B&W rocks! I forgot about them.
You can also try Burt's on Lyons Ave....but I would go with B&W.
Tortas in Houston
Tortas all over town are made with better bread than a typical bolillo. Most use refried beans as the "mayo" equivalent to help bind all the ingredients together.
I usually get them at carnicerias or taco trucks. Tasty.
But for a torta-virgin, I suggest you try Mexico Deli on Dairy Ashford. A truly terrific joint with creative tortas, beyond the typical fajita & pastor choices. They also always have some homemade drink refreshments that are truly fantastic, better than the typical horchata, limonada choices elsewhere. And....they're fluent in English.
big thumbs up for Mexico Deli.
Interesting Day at Seabrook Fish Market
nothing is as it seems. It's a worldwide economy, with stuff being shipped all the time, everywhere. Even the dockside fish market on the bay is selling imported stuff. You have to do some real detective work to find local stuff and maybe ask some specific questions as to where everything comes from.
In all fairness, a pickup truck pulled into the lot with a few burlap bags full of oysters (labelled as from the bay) ready to unload as I was leaving.
Interesting Day at Seabrook Fish Market
I was out along Galveston Bay earlier today, thought I'd stop by Seabrook at one of the string of fish markets. There's a whole block full of 'em, just on the north side of the bridge connecting 146 between Kemah & Seabrook. So, I pulled in the parking lot of one of the places. You know, I want some of the local stuff.
First thing I see is some guys unloading fish from a truck. Turns out it's all boxed fish, labeled as being from California, other boxes from China!
I sat in the car thinkin' this through for a minute.
Finally decided to come on home & cook chicken soup for dinner!
It was a very good year.... (2007/Hou)
Bissonet is fun. The stretch north of 59 & east of Beltway8 has lots of choices, including some Nigerian places (Finger Lickin' Bucketeria was good a few years ago, haven't been there in awhile).
I wasn't impressed with Burns (or Thelma's) a few years ago either.
At La Michoacana (and other carnicerias) the routine is usually the same. You pay at the cashier (who probably speaks English). An order of a "platillo" or "plate lunch" is the same thing (both names commonly used) and is 1 large portion of meat or 2 smaller portions of different meats along with rice & beans & tortillas. Cost about $5. Then you go to the lunch counter where they might not speak English. They will want to know 3 things: to-go (llevar) or eat in (aqui), which meats (you can point), and corn (maiz) or flour (harina) tortillas. You might have to hunt around for some salsa. Caldo de res (beef soup) is usually pretty tasty as well. Don't expect consistency - this isn't McD's.
It was a very good year.... (2007/Hou)
comments to your comments....
gotta include Vieng Thai on Long Point. They continue to impress. The papaya salad & anchovie salad are incredible. Be aware everything seems to be homemade, so sometimes 1 or 2 dishes may be off. However the vast majority are truly outstanding. I'm a big, big fan of them.
agree with Himalaya - good stuff
always been a big fan of Burt's
tried Gerardo's & was disappointed. I tend to get better lunch counter tacos & platillos at the "chain" (yikes) of Carniceria La Michoacana.
agree with the super with bacon at Villa Arcos (they should be re-open after their annual winter break)
I might get blasted, but I've enjoyed the brisket at Houston BBQ on Eldridge
but Williams will be missed....definitely the saddest story of '07
Good fishmonger in Houston
clarifying your old post....
that Fiesta is soon to close, thanks to the Katy Frwy expansion.
I go to Airline Seafood on Richmond. Not sure about sushi quality, but they are quite high quality, with good variety (and excellent campechana).
[HOU] Going to try Beaver's this weekend. Anyone gone yet?
I've been once & was disappointed in the ribs. I've heard very mixed reviews on the other bbq, but heard good reviews on the side dishes & non-bbq stuff.
Note that the bartenders are very good & can mix just about anything and will happily make suggestions.
Cajun / Creole / Po Boys in Houston
Catalina on Washington fires up a chinese box on Sundays.
Barbecue in Houston
I heard it was electrical (don't see how as it was at/near the pits but maybe they had an outlet there?). Also heard it started at 4:00am; could be when they get there to fire up the pits?
