Fresh Strawberries in glass jars - two weeks and still perfect

Reporting back a week later - I did the glass jar, no wash, no vinegar, just don't include any damaged strawberries - and it's great. Had some strawberries in my cereal this morning and they were almost as good as day of picking. Grateful for this tip.

I agree of course that fresh is best - the best I ever had were handpicked by us at an Amish farm - we had to wash them using their hand pump - and they were amazing jewels that tasted like strawberries should. Now when I buy them at farmers markets we always have more than we can eat immediately. So this is great.

Fresh Strawberries in glass jars - two weeks and still perfect

Thanks for the reply! I have my beautiful Cape strawberries in the glass jar in the refrigerator and I will be waiting to see what happens. This may be the best food tip I've ever seen!

Fresh Strawberries in glass jars - two weeks and still perfect

Coming in here years later - I'm trying this method with farmers market strawberries right now, but was wondering if anyone has tried mixing berries, like strawberries and blueberries, say, or if it's best to segregate them. Hope people are still reading this thread - sounds like a great tip.

Best Pizza in Westchester (again)

Again, CICCONE'S in Ardsley has excellent slices as well as pies as well as really good food. They're also called "Ardsley Pizzeria" - check them out, they are really good. Center Street in Ardsley - up the hill from Saw Mil River Road, next door to DeCicco's Market.

Riverdale Restaurants

I hadn't heard it re-opened - where is it?

Worst restaurants in Westchester

This is an odd comment, dated August 14 2011, seeing as the restaurant has been closed for over a year - see http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/713927 . Just sayin'.

Best Pizza in Westchester (again)

Also known as Ciccone's - terrific pizza and food, hidden away next to the DeCicco supermarket up the hill from Starbucks. Worth looking for - tasty thin crust pizza prepared with a light touch. Excellent veal cutlets in any preparation- prepared with a light touch, not heavy or deep-fried.

Best Pizza in Westchester (again)

Catania's salad pizza is amazing, but don't leave without a cheese calzone. Smaller than the usual, round/square, so you can really savor the interplay between the cheese and crust - these are perfection. Also excellent chicken parm rolls.

Tapas in Croton?

Had an early dinner here tonight and it was fabulous. We had succulent baby lamb chops served with fingerling potatoes, pan-seared salmon with roasted cauliifower and a delectable orange zest glaze, shrimp "gambas 44", pork tenderloin, and a spinach salad with toasted almonds, pear and a goat cheese ball. Also a great glass of wine - tempranillo. $70 for two including tax and tip - and really, really good.

ok, thanks - next time I'm in Tarrytown I'll definitely take a look! Do you know if he's cash-only?

smashed Yukon Gold potatoes and caramelized onions?

She made them, and they were delicious.

Excellent New Greek Restaurant In Westchester

Have to add: the food is even better the next day - seriously! Moussaka and pastitsio especially, but the gyro too. Fabulous.

Worst restaurants in Westchester

Biggest disappointment was PF Chang in White Plains. Food was cold, tasteless, and uninspired. Not much is worse than bad Chinese cuisine, to me - this was worse than the late and not-at-all-missed K Fung formerly in Hartsdale.

Can't believe I've never noticed this place - does he take credit cards? And where exactly is it on Main Street? Thanks!

Group of 10 for dinner in Lower Westchester

Yes, should be good - we've eaten there a few times under the new regime. Enjoy!

Excellent New Greek Restaurant In Westchester

Thanks to all of you for suggesting this restaurant - we went there tonight and had a fabulous meal. Brought home a load of leftovers too - will be enjoying this all weekend. The complimentary homemade hummus and tzatziki were delicious, and the accompanying pita was exceptional as was the Greek salad that comes with the entree. My husband had the shrimp saganaki appetizer and raved about it; I ordered the Zeus combo so that I could sample several dishes - the moussaka and pastitsio were better than I've had in fine Manhattan Greek restaurants, and the gyro and spanakopita also excellent - this platter is huge, as others have said - I tasted everything and brought most of it home. Because we also ordered lamb souvlaki which came with well-prepared rice. My only criticism is that the lamb was a bit more done than we like, so was a touch dry - I would have preferred it to be medium rare, and we realized when it arrived that the waitress hadn't asked us how we wanted it prepared (and we forgot to say). But it still was very tasty - next time we'll ask for medium rare. We took a lot of it home -- just too much to eat! As a result, sadly, we didn't order dessert - but I looked at them and have my eye on the galactobureko for next time. Coffee was very good - and they are about to get their liquor license we're told. The prices are quite reasonable, especially for the quantity of food served. Service was attentive, fast and friendly, the place is very clean and bright. The ambience is not fancy - no tablecloths or frills - but it is pleasant and comfortable, and who cares about fancy: the food is truly spectacular. What a great find - and yes, much better than Lefteris or Niko's. We had no problem finding street parking, but it was a Thursday night - I saw a sign that they do have valet parking now, so that shouldn't be an issue. I highly recommend Santorini and will be going back many times, I'm sure.
