I disagree. The service was slow. The rice was tasteless, cold, and disproportionate to the amount of fish in the sushi. For me, sushi rice makes or breaks the sushi.

Beard Papa? [moved from L.A. board]

meek - if you go to monterey park, there's almost never a line. it's 8 miles from DT, about the same time it'd take you to go Highlands.

Tamales (Dangler and Cesar Chavez)

I drove by a tamale shop on my way home, and saw literally hundreds of people waiting in line. Now I didn't have time to stop, but if there's that big of a line, I imagine it's cheap, authentic, and good.

Anyone give it a shot before? Would love to see a quick review.

Hey all,

School's back in session and I need some advice for grub. I don't discriminate, as long as it's good, hearty, and easy on the wallet.

Suggestions, please! I'm tired of Pollo Campero and the Rodeo Grill.

Late Night Coffee Shops

Need recs for late night coffee shops anywhere within 10-20 miles of Downtown LA. Preferably, this place is good for late night studying / students. I know there are 24 hour places in K town, but I can't concentrate when there's K-pop and hot girls.

Well, I can deal with the girls...

;)

Best Bang for the Buck - Omikase Style - General LA Area

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I should have made more definite what I meant by bang for the buck. I understand sushi never gets cheap, and if it is, you might be in for a bad surprise. I guess anywhere under 80 a person is okay. That $46 dollar meal sounds too good to be true. I'd have to try that.

Any help here? I know there's a lot, but I'm looking for the cheap, good ol' hole in walls without any pretentiousness.

truly authentic Buffalo wings in San Diego

My brother told me about a place called Callahan's in Mira Mesa that's supposed to have good, cheap wings.

I don't trust my brother's judgment. Can someone verify?

Wings

You should check out the Korean hot wings at Orchid Lounge in DT LA.

Spicy and sweet (though sometimes too sweet).

Maritza's Best Carne Asada? Was this a Joke?

i tried Maritza's last week and it was pretty good. The meat was soft and flavorful, and everything just fit right. I was surprised how hidden this place was.

How are the carnitas? I heard they only have it on Wednesdays.

Please don't hurt me! I'm a newb.

pardon the terminology. I don't cook much.

I did, however, have some carnitas that had jalapenos and chiles, and the flavor was all over the pork. It might not be the carnitas you're referring to, but that's what they called it on the menu.

Thanks for the previous suggestions.

Downtown Fish Taco Shop - San Diego

yeh can't really run off during lunch time. This is more for the hoofers who need a quick bite and can only do it in dt. DT joints tends to be expensive, but this is pretty big and filling for what you can get around here.

Best Bang for the Buck - Omikase Style - General LA Area

I love sushi, but haven't done Omikase style before. I heard it's the best way to enjoy sushi. But I heard it's also expensive. I would like some recs for good omikase that won't break the bank.

Please help, food gurus/chowhounds.

Downtown Fish Taco Shop - San Diego

I'm not experienced in terms of Fish tacos, but there's a place here that's pretty good and cheap for downtown standards. So student interns/fellow cheapos, there's a place at 4th and C. 4 bucks gives you a fish taco with 3 pieces of fish, enough to hold in two hands, pretty well seasoned fries, and cold slaw.

Cheap Eats in Downtown San Diego, near Horton

Yeh, I want good carnitas, short of going to Mexico or marrying a mexican wife.

I've had two general types of carnitas: one that seems like just normal stewed pork, and ones that seems to be stewed with jalapenos and chiles. Where can I find more of the second type?
