Brunch in Fort Lauderdale
Completely agree. The views are absolutely beautiful. Also, the $30/person includes bottomless mimosas and bloody mary's. It's a great deal given the drinks, the quality of the food and the amazing views. The seafood pasta is not to be missed.
Stone crabs packed to travel at Miami Airport?
Not sure about anywhere in the airport, but this might help if you can leave the airport and buy them:
Security will not let you through with a regular gel ice pack or ice due to the liquid/gel restriction, but they will let you through with dry ice. This is available at many grocery stores (specifically Publix here in South Florida). I have done this many, many times and have never had a problem. I normally pack the claws in a soft sided cooler with the dry ice wrapped in plastic.
Stone crabs need to stay very cold or they spoil quickly...the dry ice is absolutely necessary.
What was your favourite childhood concoction, which you now think is disgusting?
My mom used to always serve a block of cream cheese with A1 poured on top of it, with crackers to spead it on. it was always a big hit. I loved it then and love it now. Seems so lowbrow...but she served it recently again at a party....guess what--still a big hit :)
Dim Sum in West Broward/ Ft Laud
I'm not sure if it is the same place, but Hong Kong City is once again serving dim sum. It's only limited hours, I think until 4pm most days. Call to check.

food prep tragedies
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner at our house for all 32 relatives.
My mom and I were very stressed as we were in charge of the turkey and most of the sides.
We had a HUGE turkey. That 30-or-so pounder took almost two days to thaw out and just about as long to cook.
When it finished the bird looked absolutely beautiful. Deep brown, crispy skin, tender and juicy on the inside. It was perfect.
We set all the sides buffet-style along several tables, but mom wanted my dad to carve the turkey table side since it was so beautiful.
Dinner that year was served outside on the patio since the weather in Florida was very pleasant.
With everyone seated, Mom loaded the mammoth bird up on a huge platter and began walking from the kitchen onto the patio.
Everyone was watching the majestic bird’s entrance when…
Mom’s foot caught the door-stop leading out to the patio.
That 30-pound bird took flight once again…this time without its wings…and SPLAT, hit the ground and then rolled, end-over-end, across the patio.
Everyone was shocked into silence.
Mom and I both knelt down to examine the bird.
Covered in dirt.
I was devastated, but mom, always quick on her feet, scooped the massive bird back onto the platter and announced:
“Don’t worry everyone. I’ll just run inside and get the “other” turkey out of the oven. There will be plenty for everyone. Go ahead and help yourself to the sides.” Big and gracious smile on her face.
I was so confused. Where was this “other” turkey? But I was so impressed, that’s my mom, always prepared for anything…
I lost my admiration when upon entering the kitchen my mom started frantically wiping the dirty turkey off…
But where is the other turkey, mom?
To which she replied, “There IS NO OTHER turkey. Help me get this one cleaned up before anyone comes in here!”
So we did. We got as much dirt off as we could and then had my dad come in the kitchen to carve it. We laid all the nice pieces on several large platters and walked them right back out and served them.
I’m sure some of the guests were suspicious, but no one said anything.
At the end of the day there was no turkey left. A little dirt never killed anyone…
Moms: ready for anything!

What a lovely menu...I'm funny, invite me over next time!
ISO your best "grains" salads - scorching hot
Here’s another one, but just with plain wild rice:
Wild Rice and Pea Salad
Cook wild rice accordingly.
Cool rice.
Add to cooled rice: one diced red bell pepper, a few sliced scallions, a package of defrosted, frozen (or fresh, if you are lucky enough to have them) sweet green peas.
Mix this with bottled or homemade creamy Italian dressing to taste.
Salt and pepper.
I have also added walnuts and shredded chicken to this recipe with success.
ISO your best "grains" salads - scorching hot
I love to make a greek quinoa salad that is very similar:
Cook the quinoa per the box instructions, let cool.
Add to cooled quinoa cut up cukes, tomatoes, bell peppers, (and any other veggie you have around-even if not traditional), pitted kalamata olives, sliced pepperocinis, and lots of delicious feta cheese.
Make a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, and oregano, salt(very little since the feta is pretty salty) and pepper.
The flavors get better over time.
You could add chicken, fish, gyro meat…really anything!
Lychee sightings - Miami
Saw them at my publix last night...they wanted $1.49 for TWO individual, dryed-out lychees!
Your week of easy dinner meals please
Finsmom-
Great menu. Do you leave the chicken in the slow cooker all day? How many hours? also, I assume you use the low setting...
Thanks
Need ideas for ground beef
I like this take on "Spanish Rice"
I roast pablanos, remove the skin, seeds and veins, and dice. I add this to onions and garlic that I sauté. I add cooked ground beef/turkey and season with chili powder, cumin, and cayenne. I add black beans, corn, and pre-cooked rice to the pan to heat up. I then cover the mixture with Mexican spiced cheese and put it under the broiler until it is nice and bubbly. I finish off with homemade salsa and sour cream, and some sliced fresh jalapenos for SO
An added bonus...only one pot gets dirty!

could you provide the address or cross street on Coral Way for the Oriental Grocery. Thanks
Smoking in Rosey Baby
Thanks Rick, we will look into those. The appeal with Rosey Baby is that it is literally two miles from our home. Oh well, I guess we'll have to find a new place. Thanks for the suggestions!
Smoking in Rosey Baby
SO and I ate at Rosey Baby for the first time this weekend. Let me start out by saying that although it took a very long time for the food to come out, it was worth it. I had the crawfish sampler (one pound for 12.99) and SO had the chicken and sausage jambalaya, which was awesome.
The beer selection was fun. Apparently they change the bottled beer quite often and it great to try new brands.
Also, the band was really great.
Now the negative--the place was FULL of smokers. I thought this was illegal in Florida? Nothing against smokers in general, but I HATE trying to enjoy a meal and with every bite getting a nose full of smoke.
So what's up? I've heard that as long as the food-to-alcohol ratio is heavier on the food side, no smoking allowed. Am I incorrect? Does Rosey Baby have a special exception?
Thanks for your imput!

This was so nice of you to do. I can't wait for the mango update as well. Thanks!
How do you prepare haricots verts?
This is truly delicious and so so easy.

Hong Kong City is reopening!
Inspired by this post, SO and I will be going either tonight or tomorrow night. What dishes are "not to be missed"? Thanks for the advice! I'll report back after we go.
Recipes for my brother
When I had my wisdom teeth removed I made or bought my favorite kinds of soup (lots from panera) and blended them until I was able to "eat" them through a straw. There are so many options and it's nice to have some variety.
I also made mac and cheese (out of a box-don't judge), put it in the blender with a little extra milk and blended it until smooth enough to drink.
Best of luck to you and your brother.
Chef's Palette Fort Lauderdale
I have not been but would greatly appreciate your review if you end up going. I've always been curious, but never bold enough, to try it. Thanks
Clearwater: Where would you eat before a show at Ruth Eckerd?
Tio Pepe's gets my vote. It is close and wonderful. Try the grouper (or whatever fish) a la rusa. There are many reviews on here, just do a search.

Fuddruckers in South Forida?
There is a new Fuddruckers open at the Shoppes at Pembroke, the new outdoor shopping center off of Pines Blvd and 75.
We went to RA (sushi place) for drinks, no food, last weekend. The cucumber martini was pretty good, but a little too sweet. I'll ask for less syrup next time. The staff was very friendly.
the Grape Merchant is also there with a pretty wide selection of wines by the glass in a nice, comfortable setting.
They also serve cheese, pate, and other bites for relatively inexpensive prices. We snacked on a large wedge of brie, a whole baguette, and two red wine flights (three 2 or 4 oz pours) all for less than $30. We ended up taking over half the cheese and bread home with us to snack on later.
Nice to have something new in this part of Broward.

road trip, in search of "local" chow
Ok, in response...Rustic Inn has a dolphin lunch special on Tuesdays that is amazing...if you are looking for something less expensive, but still want to take in the atmosphere. It's a huge piece of mahi, rice, drink, red pots, and veggies all for $7 or so.
An aside--I do not work for them or have any interest in the place other than I have had many satisfying dining experiences there and like that it feels a little like "old Florida".
Hope you find exactly what you are looking for.
road trip, in search of "local" chow
What about Rustic Inn in Ft. Lauderdale. Garlic crabs that you crack at your table...absolutely delicious and perfect with a cold beer. There have been mixed reviews on this board, but we have always enjoyed the food and the experience. It is truly a local staple-it's been around since 1955.

Hope you enjoy
Update us when you get back...I wouldn't mind making that trip myself...I hope your husband comes back restored.
A Biscotti recipe to share
Here's a healthier recipe that I've tried and enjoyed...compliments of Link930 (cut directly from her/his previous post-link at bottom)
(caveat: I'm no good at writing down recipes) Adapted from elise.com/recipes (one of my favorite food blogs!).
whole wheat flour 2 cups
baking powder 1.5 tsp
salt 1/2 tsp
brown sugar 1/4 cup
Splenda 1/2 cup
eggs, extra large 2
vanilla extract 1.5 tsp
almond extract 1 tsp
cinnamon dash
nutmeg dash
ginger dash
star anise dash
pumpkin puree, canned 1/2 cup
1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. Sift together all dry ingredients.
3. In a separate bowl, beat together the wet ingredients. Add this to the dry ingredients, and mix until it just comes together. Mixture will be slightly crumbly, but will hold together well.
4. Shape into a large, flat log with a slight hump in the middle. It should be about 1/2" thick. Alternatively, you can shape into smaller logs, or even make into cookies. Reduce baking time to about 20 minutes for the smaller biscotti, and about 15 minutes for the cookies, or until you get the degree of crispiness that you like.
5. Bake for 25 minutes, take out of oven, and let cool.
6. Slice on the diagonal, place biscotti on their sides, and bake for a further 10 minutes, or until as crispy as you like.
These will store well in airtight containers for about 9 days.
Yields 12 regular sized biscotti, 24 small

St Petersburg Beach pre-wedding eats
Jenny--I just got married at the Don three weeks ago. We had a get together like what you're doing at Gators on the Pass. It was a great atmosphere, good food, good drinks, and reasonably priced. We were able to completely rent out the top bar area for the evening. we had about 30 people and it worked perfectly.

So what did you make this past weekend?
Arika--
I'm new to "crockpotting", can you give me the recipe for your bbq sauce and the directions for the cooking? I'm sure it's simply, but I have to start learning somewhere! Thanks in advance.
