Catfish Alley, Las Vegas

I agree, I read somewhere that they closed down but had to see it for myself two weeks ago. I've visited Catfish Alley every time I'm in Vegas, about 3 times since it opened and got visiting friends to dine there. Everyone similarly commented on the friendliness of the owners.

We were heartbroken driving up to the empty space. Does anyone happen to know if the owners will continue to venture in the restaurant business?

Lunch at Jai Yun

I came here here for lunch and had the $18 option and thought it was an incredible value. The many dishes with the effort and time is well worth the price. The place had 2 other tables at noon but I don't think Jai Yun relies on lunch.

I agree with others who complaint about the price since my chinese parents would do the same which is a bad mentally for chinese cuisine, I believe this mentally hurts chinese businesses who compete with each other for the lowest price. I spent $20 at Nick's for 3 tacos and a drink so Jai Yun's banquet lunch is a steal.

From reading the boards I expected the service to be curtly and unaccommodating I felt it was partly true. When we told the waitress we wanted the $18 option her first response was "I'm a waitress I don't know anything it's the chef" I think she throws this line at everyone despite the question.

The dishes were simple, elegant for $18/person with abalone is an amazing offer. I especially like the fried mushroom, veggie goose, chinese broccoli steams (lots of prep work for this dish), beancurd and edamame and the glass noodle and belly bacon. I wish he had the eggplant but I will be back and often too.

banh hoi

I just came back from Pang Kee in Chinatown and they have banh hoi and a fantastic nem nuong. You have to cook the nem nuong at home but one of the best I've had not including Bodard's in OC. The nem nuong is not rubbery or too sweet. Nem Nuong and banh hoi was a good combo for dinner.

banh hoi

Yes, it's what you are talking about. I've gotten them at both places before, I like to use it when I make fried tofu, boiled calamari, boiled pork slices with the shrimp paste dressing.

I think it depends on time of day and when. If you ever see the truck unloading the rice noodle (chow fun) packages you should ask the driver directly, worked for me a few times.

banh hoi

I've seen them at May Wah occasionally and sometimes at Wah Sing Supermarket on Irving and 20th ave. I guess it depends on the day and what time because I don't always see them.

They must have recently changed the sauce. I was there the first week of May and it was the scotch caramel http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonnibel...

Wine Deal: $12.99 - Pierre Sparr Crémant d’Alsace Brut Rosé @ BevMo

Good call, I went to pick them up today at the BevMo in Colma WHILE they were unloading it. They just got it in when I was picking it up.

Rosemary Restaurant Las Vegas

I agree the goat cheesecake is delicious. I don't usually like goat cheese because the aftertaste is too pungent for me, however the goat cheese cheesecake was very subtle because it was sweeten.

I went for Rosemary's lunch which was only $23 (usually $28) with the coupon printed off their website. I can't wait to go back for dinner as Wednesday is 50% for ladies. A stellar deal. I will have to try some of the dishes you mentioned.

Any DAT (Dine About Town) Reports?

Did they charge 21.95 for Luce DAT? They have the menu special all year for $20.09. I wouldn't go to Luce or most of the places for DAT. Imho, I think Sutro's, One Market, Spruce, Campton is the best bang for buck lunch DAT.

My blog post for One Market http://cocochanelella.blogspot.com/20...

I also went to Sutro's and the value is fantastic and delicious too now that they have a new chef. I hope they participate in Jan's DAT

the search for the ultimate steak

One more thing to add, since it's Dine about Town from June 1-15 I would recommend going to Ruth chris for the $35 prix fixe. The ribeye is not bad especially at that price

the search for the ultimate steak

I've had the filet mignon at Chez Spencer and agree it is rich was the sauce but I prefer the filet mignon rossini with foie gras and black truffle cabernet sauce; and it comes with a side for about $46. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonnibel...

The best ribeye I've had was at bacar about 5 years ago and had it recently and it's doesn't even beat Outback's quality.

Shanghai Dumpling Shop in Millbrae?

I prefer Shanghai Dumpling over Sunny Shanghai. SD is much more plump and juicy, as for SS I seem to taste a dishwater scent in everything I ordered it was very off putting. I heard that SD is owned by the original owner of Shanghai dumpling king in San Francisco. Does anyone know if this is true?

Guy Savoy pre-theater menu?

has anyone done the pre theater menu? The a la carte sounds wonderful but I'm looking to spend about $150 since I was to take advantage of Alex's $98 prix fixe as well. I was wondering how the meal was presented (if any amuse was given) and if it was worth it.

recession deals in las vegas

I looked at the $75 menu and with the normal prices it looks like the deal is getting dessert for free. Any reports on CUT? I've been interested to go but very pricey.

5A5 Steakhouse?

I went during the soft opening and had the A5 wagyu at $16/oz. I was quite disappointment as the meat was overly salted and it was even a little tough. I don't know if some things changed since they were very eager to heard feedback. The aged rib eye NY steak was much better than the wagyu.

I was at Burger Bar about 2 weeks ago on a thursday night at 7 pm. I waited for only 15 mins and then there was no wait when I was eating my dinner. I didn't do the egg and truffle sauce topping, here's my burger http://cocochanelella.blogspot.com/20...

Redwood City - new Gastropub Martins West - any reports?

Martin West is new and gorgeously designed so I'll get out the bad points of my visit. I came here after seeing the drool worthy pic from Melaine Wong's flickr set. I was first to arrive at the empty restaurant when we were seated at a small two top I asked for a bigger table, no big deal... but when 3-4 two tops arrive after me and none of them are even asked to sit at a two top infuriates me.

MW also stated tabla is offered with coffee but my bluebottle latte was lonely. The fish and chips dish was a real disappointment on a couple of factors. YES it's deep fried but blotting it on a towel for a few seconds after the fryer would make the fish sing. The dish includes 3 pieces but 2 of the pieces were stuck together during the frying process. If it was a dish of many small fried fish it wouldn't be so annoying but it was only 3 pieces. I thought the cook should have noticed this when he was plating the dish, obviously he didn't care. The batter crumbled apart as I took a bite. The homemade tarter sauce is delicious. I did mention that we didn't like the fish and chips and they sent us a dessert on the house and asked what we didn't like about the fish.

The server was very friendly and attentive but somewhat clueless about the menu as she couldn't tell me much when I asked her questions. I asked her about the pot of pickles and she didn't tell us they accompanied a lot of our dishes so I was "pickled" overload. We were also not offered soda bread like MW's pictures, maybe they didn't have any that today.

The duck mousse $6 was a good portion and tasty with some citrus tones it is not served with dijon mustard so we asked for some. Pheasant and leek banger needed more of the puree fava bean mash since it was a little dry.

The organic burger, scottish eggs and toffee pudding were really good. The scottish egg was fried to a golden color with the yolk still runny; $6 for 3 pieces. The organic burger is very juicy and "beefy" flavored, I also liked the bun as it was substantial and not flimsy. The space is beautiful but too dim even for lunch time. I may return once they work out the kinks.

Lunch with 2 lattes, duck mousse, pot of pickles, scottish egg, burger, fish and chips, pheasant and leek banger cost $65 not including tip.

I know La Nouvelle closed about 5 years ago because of a family situation. I've been going since I was kid and LOVE their napoleon. I've tried many places and can't find a similar one. Does anyone know where I can a napoleon like La Nouvelle?

hot and juicy crawfish (Las Vegas)

I went to Hot n Juicy tonight and the "hot n juicy" sauce was exactly how I like it: lots of garlic, lemon and spicy. The blue crab was really fresh and the meat was sweet.

PLUS: Adam from Man vs Food on the Travel Channel was filming there! He was really nice and took pics with everyone. On one segment Adam explained that the crawfish was from NOLA, blue crab from Texas and Crab from San Francisco.

Michael Mina's RN74 in San Francisco

The prices are not exceptionally cheap given the quantities everyone is talking about. The train station theme is kinda cool with the changing wine board but I agree given the economy I don't know how long the restaurant will last. The service was sooo slow, our dinner took 3 hours for 3 courses.

The tasting pours are a pretty good amount and surprising affordable. I just finished a decadent meal at BIX last week for about $100 a person including a bottle of wine (with tips and tax) and the same at RN74. I would rather go to BIX, One Market or Murray's Circle.

Pictures of the food.

I went to catfish alley along with my friends about 8 months ago. The catfish coating is light and not oily. The owners were super friendly and my friends and I still talk about going back when we are in vegas. I thought the hush puppies were awesome and I'm excited to try their ribs.

Ok, ok I'll MAKE sure this time to save room for Ronald's. I'll buy them first and snack on it by the pool. I'm going to try retro bakery too, is it worth the 20 min drive?
