Having breakfast on Long Island
just went here for the first time this morning. i was happy with the breakfast.
Paris this weekend - no reservations
thank you. I also continued searching on this board and see that there are recommendations to even stop in places 'day of' to secure a spot for the evening. I just got a little worried because the first few searches I did came up with mention of reservations far in advance.
Paris this weekend - no reservations
I am meeting my husband in Paris tomorrow for the weekend. Last minute trip. Never been to Paris before. I have been looking on the board for restaurant recommendations. However, seeing as it is last minute, we do not have any reservations. I realize that there are many people who go to Paris and plan well in advance. A few posts I saw were for restaurant itineraries 1-2 months in advance of the trip and reservations were already being booked. What are my options like in Paris without reservations? Should we try with 1-2 days notice? Or just look to go to casual places? Do more popular or higher end restaurants have tables set aside for walk-ins? I am from NYC and have a general understanding of what my options are here regarding advance reservations, which places accomodate walk-ins. I was just looking for an idea of what my dining experience can be in Paris at this point.
bagels?
i have. he doesn't remember the bagels nor the shop. i was hoping someone else found them as memorable as I have and would have a suggestion.
bagels?
my father in law picked up some bagels a while ago from a place (want to say he told me it was in amityville? maybe farmingdale?) that had great chewy small bagels. they were plain (or at least that is the only kind he got) but they didn't appear to be mini-bagels, just smaller than your standard bagel. probably closer in size to a lender's bagel.
Does anyone know what i am talking about?
what can't you get?
here on Long Island there was the Charles Chips man. drove around in a large tan truck and refilled the tins.
we never got it but a friend of mine did. Haven't seen that in ages.
Visit to Boston near Charles Street
I did want to come back and say thank you to all who made suggestions. Our trip isn't planned until mid July but I now have a great plan to work off of. And my friends are thrilled that we've started the game plan so we can hit the ground running.
Will advise after our trip.
Visit to Boston near Charles Street
Not sure what the area is called, but I spent some time in Boston a couple of years ago and headed down (up?) Charles street and really liked the area. Am trying to plan a weekend in Boston in July and would love to try to see if I could plan a weekend based on staying in that general area. Looking for ideas for food/drinks suggestions for three women. All open to anything in terms of drinks (cocktails, wine, beer) and food (any ethnicity, price range, style).
one thing i love to do, in NYC, is stop by a lot of places. Have a drink here, a dish there, move on to the next place. stopping in a bunch of places and get the best of what they have to offer. lots of eating and a high tolerance throughout the day.
oh, might see if we can catch a day game, so i know that takes us to a different area, so anything that will take us there on Saturday would be lovely.
Cheap-eats food itinerary for 4 days in Manhattan?
haven't been by in a while but i always enjoy stopping by otafuku on E.9th street between 2nd and 3rd aves. they sell okonamiyaki and takoyaki (spelling is not my strong suit). veggie friendly japanese street food.
i find it filling and cheap.
Eating well, while being poor.
"you don't need to resort to eating thighs"????
I will take a chicken thigh over chicken breast any day. it's not a cost issue, for me, it's a taste issue.
I've always been the resident "dark meat-eater" in my family and my daughter is the same and i understand that there are many people who prefer white meat, but to think that people who eat chicken thighs are "resorting"? c'mon.
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
nope. i've had mulligatawny. kind of an indian chicken soup, no? this was just a term that they used for leftovers. magipani (or something that sounded like that) stew
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
my parents were pretty good about not making us eat many things that we just did not like (i hated macaroni & cheese while my siblings loved it. they would get it as a side but i was excused from eating it). the only thing i remember being forced to eat was cubed steak. AAARRRGGGH! i would gag at the mention of it. i would chew and chew and just could not break it down enough to swallow it.
one thing i do remember was that my father used to refer to hot dogs as 'tube steak'. i would always have to have him repeat and enunciate his announcement of what was for dinner because i would often find myself looking forward to hot dogs only to have 'cubed steak' served. what a let down.
oh, his term for leftovers was 'magapani stew'. not sure of the spelling of that as i had never seen it written and haven't heard the term anywhere else.
Cupcake Stop Not Worth the Stop
I am not a fan of Cupcake Cafe either. Agreed that they are beautiful. But they are best looked at, not eaten.
Really dry cake was the most memorable thing about their cupcakes.
Benjamin's Steakhouse...I will pass next time
i don't expect bright lights either but had a ridiculously hard time reading the menu one time at Strip House. Watched neighboring tables use a light on their keyring to read the menu. We asked to be moved to another table (that happened to be in an area with more lighting).
Best fried clams, lobster, chowder in long island?
It might just be that i am not a fan of whole belly clams but i decided that if i ever find myself at Bigelow's again, i will not be paying the premium for the whole belly. I'd probably just stick with the strips.
my new hamburger ranking
i thought that Paul's closed. is this the one on 2nd ave at about 8th street?
i also really enjoy the burger at black iron burger. i think that's the name. on 5th between A and B.
Best Ice Cream Brand
Not sure if it is still around but Double Rainbow ice cream is very good though not easy to find. Their Mint Chip is the best I have tried.
Murray Hill
Penelope - Lexington @ 30th. casual sit down.
Barking Dog - 34th St. btw Park & Lex. casual sit down.
These aren't really in Murray Hill but I will generally walk down for breakfast if I am in the mood
Sunburst - 3rd Ave @ 19th(?) - really cheap sit down or take out
Petite Abielle - 1st Ave @ 20th
Pat Lafrieda Burgers
While I can't speak to the burger mixture used, I am very fond of Black Iron Burger. My husband and I (and our 21 month old daughter) enjoy the casual setting. Great place for a very good burger and a beer at a reasonable price. Fries are also very good (and peppery).
Family foods I thought was normal
There is (or was) an old restaurant in the restaurant row area (might be a on that block or one or two off) that was a real old school type place on the garden level. My husband and I stopped in for a drink at the bar (after spying it through the window and becoming intrigued) and checked out the menu. They have something like this on the menu. However, you have to order it a couple of days ahead of time.
Sorry, this is in Manhattan. I forgot that I was on the general board.
Walking Out due to the Menu Options
I'm there with you on all things licorice / anise flavored as well as dill. I have recently been able to add very small amounts of fennel (only if it is a dish that i'm dying to have except for the fennel). plus there are some biscotti that have anise flavor that i'll manage to choke down.
How do you use white truffle oil?
My thought exactly on the white pizza. The thought of that actully just made me drool a little.
Early breakfasts - for the uncool
Yesterday, my husband and I had the luck to 1) both have the day off and 2) have the sitter coming to watch our 16 month old. We decided to head out early and have breakfast .
This is the issue we came across. While I know that there are plenty of diners that are open early (7:00 or earlier if not 24 hours) we had a hard time finding a non-diner place for breakfast at about 8am. We originally intended to go to Penelope but then we had the "brilliant" idea of heading down to the lower east side (hoping to dine at Clinton street baking Company). I know it is our fault for not doing any research on the subject but once there, we realized that Clinton St. Baking company does not open until 10am. We decided to walk around a bit and found that this was the case at most places. So I guess here is my question. For future reference, can anyone suggest breakfast places that open up early. Since my husband and I tend to be out and about on the early side (on weekends), we have found some places but we are hoping that we are not even scratching the surface.
Here is a list of the places that I know are open early. Any additional non-diner suggestions would be appreciated
Penelope
7A
Kitchenette
Egg (Williamsburg)
Sunburst
Balthazar
We live in Murray Hill/Kips Bay but we will generally travel a bit.
Thank you for any and all suggestions
P.S. We would up dining at 7A
Need a suggestion for a bar/restaurant near Penn Station
thanks. went to keen's. just what i was looking for.
Need a suggestion for a bar/restaurant near Penn Station
Meeting someone this afternoon for a quick meeting. Hoping for something near Penn Station as the person I'm meeting will need to catch a train. Any suggestions on a place nearby to grab a drink where we can hear each other speak? Restaurants with a bar area are fine. Hotels with a bar are fine as well. Don't need anything super swanky but not a hole in the wall either. This will be a business meeting.
Thanks.
Your worst service experience?
I worked at a restaurant for 9 years and we always pooled the tips. And never heard of it being that rare.
joes pub
We generally get a table and order some food during shows. Haven't really tried all that much but we used to find the platter of italian meats and cheeses (name escapes me right now) to be decent. On a recent visit however, it had been changed and was just some slices thrown on a plate. It used to be served on a wooden board and appeared to have a little though put into it.
The mozzarella and prosciutto panini is fine. And i think I might have tried an okay pasta once.
Basically, we just look for something to go with a bottle of wine. Doesn't really count as a dinner out.
