Low Calorie Snacks

I am looking for some low calorie snack ideas for predinner snacking. I don't get home from work until 6:30 and my husband doesn't get home until 8. Plenty of time to make an awesome dinner, if I'm not so hungry that I just start eating anything I can get my hands on. Right now I have some Dolma in the fridge. I don't tend to like carrots and celery as snacks. Any other creative ideas of something I can snack on so I don't ruin my dinner? I'm not afraid of difficulty, foreign cuisines, or allergic to anything (the carrots and celery aversion is actually that I'm bored with them). Thanks in advance!

Best Gnocchi Mix-in Suggestions

Could you possibly give more information? Do you precook the gnocchi? Do you make a ricotta or potato gnocchi? Do you use a meat combo for the meat balls? This sounds amazing!

What to order at Bistro Du Coin?

I have had the mussels on multiple occasions and have really liked them. The blue cheese ones were a bit much for me, but that's only because I got sick of the blue cheese.

If you make it the day before, you can stick the cooked beef in the freezer, for a couple of hours, and then slice it much more thinly. I did this with a beef tenderloin and it came out beautifully. Especially if you reheat the next day in the juices, I think it would come out quite well.

Does Anyone Make "Frozen Dinners" for the Office?

Do you cook in the evenings? There are two of us, and I cook every meal for four people. I then turn the remaining food into tupperwares for lunch. If I cook for more than four, I freeze the remaining portions (keeping in mind that certain foods don't freeze all that well).

Need help with my tortilla espanol

Another question for everybody - I make my tortilla espanola in a cast iron skillet, because my only nonstick is a 12" pan and that is too much for 2 people. I heat the oil and pour in the egg/potato mixture. Once it has set a little, I stick it under the broiler. By the time the middle is set the bottom has a thick, dry brown layer that is not great. Any ideas? Do I need to use a different pan? I

Breakfast that can be frozen

I don't have any sweet ideas, but in the South Beach Diet Cookbook there is a recipe for mini quiches that you make in advance and freeze. They use eggbeaters, but I don't know why just using whichever quiche recipe you prefer with fillings wouldn't work. Bake them in muffin tins and they are a great reheatable breakfast.

I really like Mark & Orlandos. One of my favorite parts is that you can eat upstairs in the more casual dining room, but still order from the downstairs menu if you like. Their burgers are phenomenal and they have a great cheese/charcuterie plate. And if you are up for dessert the blueberry financier is incredible!

Why/when is cast-iron better than non-stick? [moved from Home Cooking]

Lots of people here will be able to give you much more technical responses than I. However, I will tell you what I believe to be true. You don't want to heat nonstick skillets with nothing in them because the nonstick coating can emit bad things if it gets too hot. However, when you are looking to sear a skirt steak you want to put the steak in a pan that is already very hot. That's where the cast iron comes in.

I tend to use them somewhat interchangably. The cast iron has the added bonus that it can go in the oven, so I take that into consideration if it is relevant. I use the nonstick if I'm sauteeing and I would rather not use quite as much oil.

Pls help bring it together

I am cooking dinner for some friends tonight. One is pregnant and a vegetarian (but she eats fish). The other is on a migraine diet that doesn't allow her to eat cheese and citrus among other things. I have in my mind some kind of pasta dish with shrimps, scallops and squid. I'm thinking more of a garlic, olive oil with fish broth finish, but I'm having trouble making it congeal in my head. Any ideas?

Great Burger on a Sunday night.

Mark & Orlando's has a great burger. I also really like the burger, and the turkey burger at Clyde's.

Good food near Wardman Park Marriott (DC)?

Lebanese Taverna is a 1/2 block from there, and quite good. I believe they take reservations for a party of 6 or more, but I wouldn't swear to it. Lots of veggie options, and very relaxed atmosphere.

Another popular suggestion on this board is Dino's. It is up one metro stop (opposite direction from Dupont). I haven't eaten there, but I hope to in the near future.

If you go upstairs at M&O's, the entrees are even less (I think the most is $15), and you have access to both menus should you want the stuff from downstairs in a more casual setting. I think the food there is great!

hostess gift suggestions

I have to agree with the OP here. When I have sent invitations to a birthday party indicating "no gifts", I am referring to the birthday boy. I would never be offended by someone bringing a small hostess gift.

I have to agree that wine or flowers are great as hostess gifts.

Restaurant Advice for Date in Dupont Tonight!

There are a lot of options:
Mark & Orlando's - you can eat downstairs for a nicer "white tablecloth" experience or upstairs for something more casual

Montsouris - French food, owners are the same as Montmartre, we had an excellent dinner there a couple of weeks ago.

Hanks Oyster Bar is great, although a little loud sometimes.

I also love Bistrot du Coin - although I know that many on this board disagree.

Sette - Italian food - quite good.

Buying wine

We go to Schneider's. They have an excellent selection, and more importantly to me, phenomenal service. As a wine newbie, I have found that I can walk in there with a price point I would like to hit and they have some wonderful recommendations.

I love the mojito's at Cafe Atlantico. I believe that we had them at Bar Pilar, but they weren't anything memorable. I guess we just have different tastes, huh?
