My post will not be as graphic as others (which I loooove reading because they're so inspiring) nor as detailed, but I do have a recommendation!
Teriyaki Cowboy is a small little Japanese restaurant located at Fort Stockton and Hawk Street. It's tucked away in the corner of the shopping plaza next to a coffee cart and cute little clothing shop called Christie's.
The food is inexpensive, and they are not the typical Japanese sushi restaurants in San Diego (thank god! something new!). I mean, I love sushi, but come on, the Asian restaurant picks in San Diego need more something, IMO. The restaurant has a menu featuring bentos, noodle soups, fantastic donburi's (I love), curry rice, etc. You get the picture: it's Japanese casual dining. =)
First off, the customer service is really sweet. The owner/ cook and his wife run the place. I found out their brief history while waiting for a to-go order from a cut-out piece in the NY Times they posted but I can't remember all the details. The piece is like 1/4 of a page and goes into great detail about the food as you would expect critics to do.
About the food. I just recently discovered this place when I moved to the area 2 months ago so I don't have much here.
The edamame is great, not soggy and I think they use a rock salt because they use larger crystals that don't go away (I love that).
Their fried chicken is as you would want it, actually crisp and tender - not greasy and heavy.
The katsu is moist and crunchy - yum!
I tried my boyfriend's shrimp tempura (he doesn't care for shrimp) and it had great texture - crisp, light and non-greasy as well. I wanted his vegetable tempura, but he ate them all. =(
The miso soup, by the way, is simple and just right. Not too salty -- the large miso is served in a giant soup bowl, btw. It's huge!! haha
I had the gyu don which was sublime. I was in heaven when I was eating this - the sauce is so delicate and the meat so tender, I wish I could eat 3 more bowls!! It's so simple: just rice, with the meat, and maybe a couple shreds of ginger or radish - I don't know what the pink stuff is.
The chicken katsu don is my other favorite. The rice and katsu are not soggy, but a light sauce imbues the entire dish so I didn't need to dump any soy sauce in it.
I've tried their sushi, and it's well made and proportioned just right for me. No giant mounds of rice, no huge slabs of fish. I've only tried their specials, which they post on the a board in front of the door and the spicy scallop roll, so I don't have much to say except that the rice was perfect, the fish tasted fresh and clean, the texture and color were just right. Tasty and pleasant.
The nabeyaki udon is really good too.
I heard that the curry rice and cold soba are just right.
Anyway, that's it. I'm getting hungry!! Happy eating to you-
