Party for 35-45 near South Street Seaport
Looking for a place that can serve a group of around 40. Would be a weeknight. Open to various cuisines, so I won't specify any in particular. Mid-Upscale. Bar of course. Help please?
Victor's on 52nd St
What's the consensus on Victor's? A friend is thinking of going there tonight. Thanks.
Tipping on a wrong delivery order
This just happened at work. We placed an order which was delivered. The delivery man was tipped. When we looked through the order, instead of lentil soup, there was a chicken and mushroom soup. When the restaurant was called, they apologized immediately and sent over the proper soup. Now... the delivery man is obviously working and looking for a tip, but... the customer has received a wrong order and has to wait until the new, correct order arrives. Should the customer have to add another dollar to his/her dinner bill for the 'priviledge' of getting the correct order? Just wondering what's the norm?
ISO Subterranean Drinking and Dining Spots
Coliseum Bar on 58th just west of 8th., Rocky Sullivan's on Lex. at 27th?, There's a bar on 9th Ave btwn 56th & 57th... west side of the street, Black and White on 10th St. btwn 3rd and 4th, There used to be a McAnn's around 45th and 5th. I'm sure that space must be another bar/rest. now. Of course there's Wo-Hop at 17 Mott St., The Bar at Bowery Ballroom, Bar/rest. at the Rock Ctr. ice rink. There's an italian rest. on 56th St., a door west of Patsy's that's downstairs, Prune has a (very) small downstairs room.
Babbo fully booked! - now I'm lost!!
Go to Babbo at 5:00 - 5:30 on July 1st and ask to be put on the waiting list. You'll get in, no problem. I've done this twice, once on New Year's Eve, and had no trouble.
Lower East Side, need cheap or reasonable and good!
Agree with Schiller's. Get there early (six isn't bad) before the deluge of people. Inoteca at Ludlow and Rivington has excellent 'small plate' italian and a killer wine list.
Del Posto Last Night- A bit of a disappointment
Went to the enoteca last Sunday for my girlfriend's b-day. We had the tasting menu. Everything was excellent. The service was even more than excellent. In fact, I called the next day to compliment our waiter and busboy. Not going to remember every dish, but we had the zucchini carpaccio x 2, pasta w/ pesto, and pasta w/lamb (they made it w/ tomatoes for me...vegetarian), odd, but I don't remember the main courses. They made a vegetarian entre for me. Had a cheese plate and then dessert. A beer and a wine before dinner, a bottle w/ dinner and a dessert wine too. It was really a great time and I'd go back again. Sounds like the enoteca is preferable to the main room. And by the way, it's all the same room. The enoteca is just a corner of the room, on your left as you enter, that has been set aside. It's neither seperate nor 'Siberia' feeling.
Craving Good Thin Crust Pizza in Westchester
Twenty five minutes from the Tappan Zee, in Mahwah, is Kinchley's Tavern. The best thin, and I mean thin, crust pizza I've had. Fresh Garlic and Black Olives is my favorite. The Broccoli is great too. Plain? Out of this world!
Disappointing Dinner at Piadina
Haven't been to Piadina although a friend raves about it. I used to go there often when it was 'Whole Wheat and Wild Berries.' I've been trying to find their (WWWB) salad dressing recipe for years. It was the best I've ever had.
Looking for the best microbrewery in New Jersey
High Point Brewery (Ramstein beers) has the best 'micro-beers' that I've had. Their seasonal beers are really good. The Winter Ale was highly regarded and last year, one of their beers was mentioned, as among the Summer's best, in Newsweek. They usually have four or five diffrent beers on tap, some available in bottles and others available by growler. Egan's used pass off Ramstein as their own until they were caught. Not mentioned yet, but also pretty good, is Krogh's in Sparta. I think they have seven different beers on tap. Much better than average 'bar-food' and live original music on weekends.
My lunches near Carnegie Hall
I'm at 57th and 8th. Anyone know of a good, nearby (2 or 3 blocks) Falafel?
Best bagels in Tristate area?
Not sure, but I think my church gets their once-a-month bagels for sale from Sam's. They're definitely among the best bagels I've ever had. There used to be a fresh bagel store in Teaneck on Cedar Lane, right near the theater that was very good. You could see the bagels going by in the boiling trough. What a great smell!
Fresh Mexican (not a hole) in Bergen County?
The best mexican restaurant in the Bergen area, by far, is just over the northern border in Suffern. Dona Maria is on LaFayette, the main drag through town. There is another mex. place across the street, ironically also called Hacienda, which I've always liked. 'Dona' beats it hands down. The owner is friendly, the service is well executed and the food is delicious. Chips are homemade. The 'salsa' is more like a gravy and very good. Try the tortilla soup, the roasted vegetable salad, the squash blossom quesadillas. The mole is excellent. This is not a 'gloppy-plate' type of place. Full bar as well. Mexican food is my favorite, and this is as good as it gets in this area.
Soul food restaurant in Passaic County?
Drove by, on a detour, this morning a 'Chicken and Rib Crib' on LaFayette in Hawthorne. At least I think that's the name of the main street. Looked to be Take-out and delivery though.
early dinner near 8th and 53rd on Sunday?
Mee Noodle House at 53rd and 9th. No atmosphere, but good eats at great prices.
Church St. - Park Pl. recs?
My work may be moving to the Church St. - Park Place area. Are there any decent places to eat there between 7PM - 10PM on weeknights?
Lunch: cheap noodle soup?
A bit of a walk, but Mee Noodle House at 53rd and 9th has a great 'Vegetable and Cellophane Noodle Hot & Sour Soup. A large, which I can't even imagine finishing, will set you back $3.25. Be sure to adda little Red Chile Oil.
MEXICAN in Rockland County
Back to Dona (Maria?) this past Saturday. Wow! Quesadillas (spelled with a 'z') included huitlacoche and pumpkin flower. The grilled vegetable salad is up there with my favorite dishes anywhere. Bar is in full swing and the owner bought a shot of 1800 tequila to finish.
Good Israeli food on a weekend
The real drawback to Azuri would be that they're closed on Fridays and Saturday and the OP was looking for weekends
No mention yet of F. Bruni's lambasting of Cipriani [moved from Manhattan board]
One of the most searing reviews I've seen. They must be seething over there...or...they couldn't care less because the lemmings will continue to come.
Best pizza pie in Northern NJ(Bergen)
The Brooklyn Coal Oven in Hackensack is about two minutes from Cedar Lane in Teaneck. Go over the bridge into Hackensack, turn right. Look on your left. Reach Route 4? You went too far.
or
Take Rt. 4 west to Hackensack Ave. under the underpass. Go about 1/4 mile on Hackensack ave. and it's on your right
How far would you go out of your way for Babbo?
I'm curious why it's any more of a 'pain in the ass' to spend 15 minutes on a phone for a reservation 30 days in the future than it is to spend 15 minutes on the phone to make a reservation for that same night? It's still 15 minutes! Been to Babbo three times, twice with walk-ups, including New Year's Eve a few years ago. Sat upstairs, downstairs and at the bar. We enjoyed all three dinners and found the staff to be polite and efficient. No problem with the music. We've probably been lucky, but the walk-up seems so easy that I always wonder what all of the fuss is about when it comes to getting a table. Take a chance!
What's your latest wheat beer discovery?
Pretty sure they're all wheats. Give them a call and Greg will be happy to tell you where it's available in your area.
What's your latest wheat beer discovery?
I like all of the Ramstein wheat beers from High Point Brewery in Butler N.J.. In fact, Wheat beers, in various styles (Octoberfest, Summer, Winter, Blonde) are all they make. Their Winter Wheat debuts next week. Somewhere around 10% alc. content!
Tapas Party
Was at Alta on Monday. 'The Whole Shebang' is $340. We decided, though, that if we were going to spend $340, we'd get $340 worth of only the dishes we liked. It can add up though and the bill was over $700 for seven of us. Also remember, American Express or Cash only!!
Furture Throwdown with Bobby Flay u'd like to see
Both the 'guy from New Jersey' and the 'opera singer' were big-time prize winning cooks. The opera singer having both won and placed second in some company's national search the past two years. Her winner ( the greek burger which was on the show) netted her a $10,000 prize. Don't try to make it sound like he was going up againsst some people with Weber grills in their yards.
