Pienza and Vicinity: Cooking Classes, Dining

Hi 'Hounds!

My husband and I are going to Italy for the first time in a few weeks and have an ambitious itinerary. We're doing three nights in Pienza at an agriturismo and I am curious about eating around there, and if you CH folks have any cooking class or must-do recommendations in the region.

Mille grazie!

Any good Jewish Deli's in the Seattle area?

I totally agree that we should be happy to have a Stopsky's-like place around here, FINALLY. I grew up in a super Jewish neighborhood in LA and had amazing deli food weekly. I was so so so so so (many many 'so's) excited when I heard about Stopsky's - I've been complaining about the lack of decent matzo ball soup or pastrami or a knish since I moved here in the 90s. I finally went, and... "Meh." It was fine, really, but just fine. The matzo ball soup was thin and needed salt, badly. The pastrami was underseasoned, too. It was decent, texturally, with a good amount of fat, but still was a tad dry. The pickles were lacking flavor and crispness. I didn't try anything else, and need to go back for some potato pancakes to see how they stack up. I also need to drag my also-relocated mom there and see how she compares it to our old Roll n Rye exploits in Culver City. I want it to be great, and it just wasn't on the day I was there.

Anyone been to Rione XIII?

I ate there last week and loved it. The fried artichokes were sublime - not anything I would have typically ordered, but ended up being one of the best dishes I've had in a while. Fried perfectly, not oily in the least, beautifully seasoned and with depth of artichoke flavor. The mozzerellas were lovely, and the grilled bread was a nice touch. The chicory-ish caesar-ish salad was too heavy on the anchovy flavor for me, but to me any anchovy is too much anchovy, so I'm not the best judge. The anchovy-neutral among us didn't find it overbearing. Then we had a pasta with a very light marinara and the caci e pepi (sp?), both of which were subtly divine. The heat on the pepi was a sneaker-upper, and totally delightful. We finished with the sweet polenta tater tots, the tiramisu and the amaretto cake. Just get tiramisu for everyone - totally fawn-worthy. The room feels warm, good lighting... I loved it!

Best Indian Restaurant?

Traveler's on Beacon Hill serves ridiculously fantastic thali. Always lots of Indians eating there, which is the best sign, of course, and I've even heard lore that Indians from as far as Vancouver come to town for a Traveler's thali. Totally addicting. The menu changes monthly.

Need a Venue in Seattle for a Chef Dinner

I'm trying to find a nice Seattle space from which to host a dinner with a chef friend. Needs to have a kitchen and space for 30 ppl to dine (preferably one long table). Any thoughts? I'm drawing a blank.

Best Seattle Ethiopian?

Hey 'Hounds -

What's the best Ethiopian in Seattle? What Ethiopian restaurants have the most consistent Ethiopian clientele (always a good sign!)?

Thanks!

Casual Dinner for 14 on Friday

Hi All -

I'm coming to town and need to host a casual (e.g., not expensive, not formal) dinner for 14 this Friday. Ideally around Embarcadero, but that's not as important as wanting the food to be good. One friend recommended Brandy Ho's. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Easy, Excellent Dinner?

Hey Chicago Hounds -

I'm in town and have had an amazing eatinerary thus far (Boka, Hot Doug's, Primehouse, a few Intelligentsia moments, reservations at Topolobampo, etc.), and I'm really wanting an easy, mellow meal tonight. Nothing over the top, nothing amazingly rich or decadent, just good food for a Sunday night. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Food in Zihuatenejo?

Hey Chowfriends -

We're headed to Zihua and want to know where and what to eat. When in Mexico we like the gamut, from high-end to street-food, but our hearts really lean more towards the latter. What's the good Zihua street food, or where do the locals eat, or where should we eat that we might not really hear about from the tourist sources?

Thanks for the input - this really is the best part of travel...

Recommendations for Columbia, SC?

Thanks so much, FF! Really appreciate the recommendations and the detail. I'm likely going to bring a bunch to Motor Supply or Terra tonight, and then for sure we'll make the Little Pigs trek tomorrow.

Seattle: Great Vietnamese?

Hi Hounds -

My mom wants to do a fun, 10-person dinner the night before Chinese New Year. Any suggestions for a great Vietnamese place? We'd like something that is beloved by the local Vietnamese community. Suggest away!

Thanks!
