Great Italian in Dyker Heights

The one on 13th is not a sit down cafe. I cannot vouche for the one on 86 street because it has been years but there is a sit down area.

Chinese dinner (NOT dim sum) in Sunset Park - who's good these days?

I've been stuck on a Grand Sichuan in Bay Ridge. If I'm leaving my neighborhood for Chinese food I just go there.

Looking for a Bakery to Create Custom Designed Gingerbread "houses".

Try Ivy Bakery. They don't have a location but are working out of Root Hill in Gowanus. You can contact her at the website for the bakery

D'Amico gone?

I guess I was just listing these as lamenting what has gone that I miss. I am glad D'Amico's and Court Pastry are still there.

Where to shop other than Trader Joe's / Whole Foods...sterility vs. other [moved from Chains board]

Where to shop other than Trader Joe's / Whole Foods...sterility vs. other [moved from Chains board]

As someone with two jobs, food shopping trips are impossible. I shop at Fairway Red Hook every Friday, supplement with the green market on Saturday and cook 4 days worth of lunches and dinners on Sunday. That's quite enough.

Nino's Spinach Pie - Anything Like It Out There?

For some reason they either stopped making that spinach slice even when they were in the original location or they just never had it went I went there.

Nino's Spinach Pie - Anything Like It Out There?

Wow that looks delicious. This spinach slice was covered with a crust but was not a calzone. It was like yours only there would also be a crust on the top and when they sliced it, it was a triangle of crust and spinach in the middle.

Nino's Spinach Pie - Anything Like It Out There?

I remember these exactly the way you say but with lots of garlic too. Nothing like a Nino's spinach slice anywhere that I have ever seen again. But I will be monitoring this board in case someone knows of anywhere these can be obtained. A spinach calzone really doesn't even come close to old Nino's slice.

2 Duck Goose in Gowanus

They are still getting their act together service-wise. The service was better when they were busy. As the crowd thinned out simple items were left out, like tea to go with dessert (a pudding which really wasn't that great). The food is a bit uneven. The dishes we ordered went from okay to great, the great being a beef borscht and chinese broccoli with bacon and a poached egg (this dish was the winner). I believe this is on the way to being a very good restaurant. I am looking forward to the duck feast when we get some others to go because it serves 4-5 people.

We have been invited to our friend's country home and we want to treat them to a great dinner ( something that says thank you for your hospitality) but do not know of any places in the area or close by. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Just remembered another one King George on Fulton Street across from A & S. Great burgers. My brother took me there all the time.

Ziggy sounds like your friends are Bay Ridge diners. I have friends who only eat white meat chicken - it's maddening.

You can still get the Charlotte Russe if you really want one but you have to go to Holterman's Bakery on Staten Island.

Yes the pizza place on 5th and Carroll. Our Sunday night spot for pizza. My cousin's band also used to rehearse in their basement. Lots of nice memories you brought back for me bob96.

There was also a butcher and a pastry shop on 4th Avenue between Union and President Street. Your comment about the sawdust and the stools reminded me of it. My mother used to say we're going to "Tony the butcher". Also on Union Street between off Columbia was Cioffi's Pastry shop, another family favorite.

Source in Brooklyn for italian plum tomatoes for canning

When I lived in the area I used to go here but haven't been there in a long time. The owners were very nice old time Italians. You might want to call them.

I know what you mean. My father used to sell them from a horse and wagon. In the 70's he got modern and sold them from a truck. If you pass by the trucks that sell the sugar cane they might be able to point you in the right direction. I pass one when I walk my dog. I will ask them later tonight and get back to you if I get any info.

Unheralded Brooklyn Restaurants

This is timely because we will be eating at Okeanos for the first time tomorrow evening for a birthday celebration. We really like Polonica in Bay Ridge. Delicious stick to your ribs Polish food. I would wait until the cold weather for that one though. Well worth a train ride.
