Least Deserving Restaurant in Jonathan Gold's 99 Essentials 2010
You are so on they money Chicaymato! I would add Campanile - that place has been running on fumes for years. Boring food and tame menu. I also think Angeli Cafe is very mediocre. As for Eva, Street and Jar -- they were never good. I love JG but he's far from impartial when it comes to some of his LA chef chums.
Leda's cupcakes -- going... going... Oct 18th
I hope you're joking. Hansens are the most overrated bakery in town! Yikes, dry texture and chemical frostings. Yuck!
Who's still doing great weekend brunch these days?
Totally agree about Jar, totally overrated. The pecan roll was sickly sweet.
Comme Ca is nice.
Campanille used to be great -- but has totally gone off the boil. It was never the same after Nancy sold the bakery. Really average.
BLD is also pretty good. Great thin Pancakes.
Of course the best brunch in town is Square One -- out of this world french toast, fruit bowl and egg dishes.
Best Breakfast in LA?
Ginger-broccoli scrambled eggs. Really? Auntie Em's is the most overrated dive this side of Nebraska. It's sub-airplane food. Even have to serve your own coffee. I truly dont' understand the fixation with this place. Even the cupcakes are subpar. Sorry...
Have any Chowhound Faves Broken Your Heart
Clementine (the service, the food, just about everything is so-so), Auntie Ems (food was beyond average as was the service), Campanille (living on fumes, don't get what the fuss is about), Susina Bakery (Urth is superior in every way), the Donut Man in Glendora (better off going to Randy's or Bobs)... I could go on but why bother.
Pizzeria Mozza TONIGHT for my FIRST TIME! (so let's play a game!)
Totally agree, the squash blossoms are far too greasy, they practically spurt oil.
The classic margarita is the way to go. Or the house secret is to order the bianca with fennel sausage.
You can't beat the budino. I personally love the copetta but many friends find it too sweet. Avoid the gelatto pie -- it always sounds way better than it is. I've had the banana, coconut, pumpkin and mint and they are all kind of tasteless.
favorite large bakery/cafe?
Canter's?? You are kidding right? Talk about dry and inedible. It might be an institution but that doesn't mean the food is any good. Please, let's stick to kitchens that actually use top notch/fresh ingredients.
Looking for Great Dessert, Great Selection
Susina is okay, but nothing special. I'd vote for the deserts at the London. All excellent.
How is dinner at Bloom Cafe?
I'm a big fan. The veggie burger is great as is the tandori chicken bowl. I haven't tried them but the pizzas look pretty good and there a good variety of salads. The fresh juices are also a real treat. The only drawback is the spotty service.
CAMPANILE- REVIEW
Totally agree, both Campanile and Jar are totally overrated. Weekend brunch at Campanile used to be great, but once the bakery was sold off things went down hill. The coffee is medicore and the service uneven. The weekday lunch menu is also very weak. Not enough choices and totally overpriced. Better off going to Grace, BLD or Cube.
Fraiche, Providence & Foundry-- Must order?
I think the idea of sending out a waiver is totally outrageous. Allergy suffers need to be respected. I will never go to Providence again.
LA MILL - loving it after four visits
what is the address? can you reserve tables etc.?
Looking For A Slice Of Pie
You are kidding about the Apple Pan right? The last time I had a slice of banana cream it was just a couple of layers of brown sliced bananas and a too thin layer of cream smeared on top. Pie N Burger is MUCH better.
Best breakfast in L.A.
I don't know why people keep raving about Campanile. The brunch has totally gone down hill. It used to be great. Now it's just so so. Coffee drinks are totally second rate and even the baked goods aren't what they were.
Best Baguette on the West Side
The Wine and Cheese shop on Larchmont has the best baguette's by far. One with a soft crust and the other with a crunchier one. They do sell out fast though. Thank God someone finally spoke up about La Brea Bakery -- their bread has always been totally over-rated.
Sam's Bagels in Larchmont Village
You better hurry if you want to try Sam's bagels. The greedy new owner of the building is kicking them out.
