Bar Keepers Friend -- this stuff works.

yes but we don't keep baking soda or baking powder in the office lunchroom... hence the sugar/salt.

Bar Keepers Friend -- this stuff works.

It's magic on everything. I use it on:
le crueset pots
my corian sink and countertop
my ceramic cooktop (shines like new!)
all clad cookware
to remove coffee/tea stains from white mugs
shine up old cookie sheets/jelly roll pans

here's an office tip of mine:
If you keep a white mug at the office (like I do) and drink a lot of tea (like I do) and your mug gets stained... put in a drop of dishsoap, some hot water from the coffee machine or microwave and wet a paper towel and sprinkle on either a packet of sugar or a packet of salt. Scrub away. Rinse. No stains.

Manual can opener- which to buy? Such a disparity in pricing.

So over the past 4 years or so we've owned 2 cheap-o manual can openers and one mid-range opener. All have died and failed.

Mostly we use these for opening large tins of tomatoes in the off-season, or some beans etc. We definitely aren't using it daily.

I was in the grocery (Wegmans) and found the OXO can opener is $19.99... is this worth it? It seems to be the same as the $6.99 can openers.

On amazon, some can openers are up to $50.

I beg you, tell me which can opener you use. I need a good one that won't crap out quickly.

Pickled onions

I've tried all the methods outlined for smaller cocktail onions, usually the large onion doesn't stay crisp enough to snap off the outer layer as I remember. Or the brine doesn't effect the large onion the same way, not as flavorful.

Soft Drinks--Any Local and Regional Favorites Where You Live?

Appalachian Brewing rootbeer is better than saranac.

Pickled onions

thanks but i no longer live near balitmore or maryland. we cannot get those where i live.

Pickled onions

thanks but I no longer live in baltimore, i live hours away. was looking to make them at home.

Soft Drinks--Any Local and Regional Favorites Where You Live?

As a kid we drank a lot of Suburban Almond Smash. Great stuff. The new version out today is too cloyingly sweet.

Pickled large onions

I am still looking for help with this :(

Pickled onions

I am still looking for these as well! Have tried unsuccessfully for years to recreate them.

Family foods I thought was normal

PB and mustard go very well together. I make a spicy pb mustard for dipping soft pretzels in. Don't knock it until you try it :)

Family foods I thought was normal

hah! thanks for the link. i don't care for the kraft french though, the wishbone is much better. who knows why? i think the french has more vinegar?
i will try the ranch and french, sounds like a modified russian?

Family foods I thought was normal

Some of my weird family dishes have been passed on to my friends.
They include:
Dipping regular potato chips (prefer Utz) in French's yellow mustard

Mayo "sandwich" made with just mayo (hellmans!) on white toasted bread, must be cut in triangles.

Lettuce sandwich, basically the mayo sandwich with the addition of lettuce and some salt and pepper. My dad loved these and passed on that love to me.

Here's the one i get the most crap about: I mix in French dressing (must be Wishbone) to my mashed potatoes. It turns them a lovely shade of orange and tastes wonderful. Don't knock it until you try it. I get a lot of funny looks from this one.

Onion bagel slathered in butter and sprinkled with garlic salt.

My grandma likes to have pea soup for breakfast. My mom always fried things in mayo so I do that too. Most of the things in this thread are normal to me to be honest, not sure how weird that makes me!

Suggestions for lunch/dinner near Temple Place and also Cardiff/Swansea

no one? I figured I would at least get a few recs here.

Suggestions for Webster or Rochester, NY?

I would recommend you go to the Swan Market in the city on Parsells ave.
www.swanmarket.com German meat market and restaurant, serves beer.

Also try Restaurant Good Luck which is in the Village Gate off Goodman street. www.restaurantgoodluck.com
I think Good Luck is the best restaurant in Rochester.

I'm pretty dismayed that people here are recommending so many chain restaurants. Stay away from Five Guys, if you want a good "ground round" burger, go to Vic and Irv's or Schallers. Want a fancier burger? Absolutely go to the Gate House in Village Gate. Fantastic burgers and pizza.

Want to get fancy? Go to Lento. Great food, good ambiance, nice wine list.
Thai? King and I in Henrietta or Phuket in Webster. (Phuket Noodle is a great dish)
Dinosaur and Sticky Lips for BBQ
John's Tex Mex on South for Mexican or El Rincon if you want to make a drive.
For a pub experience, Try the Old Toad on Alexander. They do Sunday Roasts and curry dinners.
Fancy a bit more upscale pub experience with great food? The Tap and Mallet on Gregory (www.tapandmallet.com)
For wings, Jeremiah's are consistently voted best in town. Me? I prefer Acme Bar and Grill for their burgers. They also frequently have a 2for1 beer special with a ton of craft beers on tap.
Fish fry? Pittsford Seafood Market on Monroe.
Diner? James Browns Place on Culver
Want to order a pizza? Nino's on Culver
Garbage plate? Irondequoit Hots all the way.

Hope this helps someone. Need more Rochester info? Feel free to contact me.

Suggestions for lunch/dinner near Temple Place and also Cardiff/Swansea

I'm in town from 2/21 (arriving late) until 2/24 and then for the night of 2/28 (saturday night).
This is my first time in London.
I will also be in Wales/Mumbles midweek.

I'm looking for a suggestion of somewhere to eat near the Howard (Temple Place), as I won't be arriving to my hotel until after 11pm. Is there anywhere awesome nearby to eat? I will be jetlagged and feeling like it's only 6pm instead of 11 so I will be hungry.

We are pretty open to new experiences, but my dining partner does not eat seafood so I cannot book at all seafood restaurants.

Planning on a lunch at St John on the 22nd, but need suggestions for the late night meal on the 21st (saturday) and 23rd, and dinner for both nights.
I am open to going to takeaways if they have incredible food, also not adverse to going to a food truck.
The suggestions do not need to be fancy, just looking for good food.
I was thinking of doing lunch at the Borough market, any must see's/must tastes there?

In Wales I will be staying in Cardiff and Swansea, planning on visiting the Swansea market. and looking for shop suggestions on Chippy Alley.

This trip is mainly to eat, visit friends, and visit lots and lots of pubs.
I'm also doing the Fullers Brewery tour on Monday the 23rd.

To let you know about myself, I often travel just to have new dining experiences. I am very open to "offbeat" or unusual dishes. I am not a food snob and not really looking for that fancy schmancy dress up and have a 4 hour meal experience. Although I do aspire to go to the Fat Duck someday ;) Oh and I did get turned down AGAIN this year for El Bulli :)

Thanks for reading, I look forward to your suggestions.

Who has a jar of bacon fat in their fridge?

Anyone have an idea of how long bacon fat can stay in the fridge before it goes bad?

Rochester Italian

Good to hear! glad you enjoyed it.

Rochester Italian

Fantastic! I've tried them all that are on the regular menu and some of the "specials" that come around. I really like the basil pesto pizza and my companions have loved the pepperoni pizza.

Rochester Italian

http://www.proiettis.com/ or Guida's Pasta Villa on Ridge Rd in Irondequoit.
I also like La Bella Vita on Empire in Webster.

Finger Lakes, NY

http://www.danosonseneca.com/
German, charcuterie, good wine. Can't ask for more.

Lento - Rochester, NY

I've eaten at Lento and I love it. Highly recommend you check this place out. They are having a special Vegetarian dinner on July 30.

Chowhounder visiting Rochester, NY

Yep, Bad to the Bone in Williamson. Don't miss his fried okra. I always go for the ribs, but he makes a killer fried chicken too. Have to call ahead for the fried chicken.

Vanilla Sugar

I use vanilla sugar in my iced coffee in summer, also use to make a vanilla simple syrup.

Two pints of currants: one red, one champagne, what should i do?

No ideas for these? I see alot of recipes for jam/jelly that call for alot more currants than i have.

Two pints of currants: one red, one champagne, what should i do?

Yeah. My fruit csa yielded two pings of currants this week, fresh. One red and one champagne.
Any ideas?

Is upstate NY ignored by better food chains?

My local organic farm out of the Rochester/Buffalo area delivers its food to whole foods in MA instead of Wegmans in the NY area. Apparently WF pays better and is more interested in local farmers.
Sucks that there is no WF in the Western NY area for them to sell to. I'd kill for a Trader Joes here too.

Chowhounder visiting Rochester, NY

I'm not originally from here, but I grew up in an area that had alot of German foods. When I moved here, I heard about the Swan Market and their meat products. I have been going there ever since.
I love Open Face too.
However, when people come to town, I don't recommend Tahou's for a garbage plate. Original owner is dead, family fought over recipes etc.
Better plates in town at Irondequoit Hots (right next to House of Guitars), Dogtown Hots (great hot dogs too) and Bay Hots in Webster.

Forgot say I also can't agree with Edibles or Hogan's as a suggestion. Had nothing but bad meals at both. Only thing I have found to be edible at Hogan's is the Hoganstrone soup. For a sit down dinner I would suggest Lento in Village Gate.

Chowhounder visiting Rochester, NY

I'd say avoid California Rollin' for sushi. If you have ever seen their kitchen, you know why. Village Gate does have the Gate House restaurant which is great for burgers and Lento which is great for dinner (locally grown organic food). For sushi I'd say Shiki on clinton is best in town.

Chowhounder visiting Rochester, NY

Bad to the Bone kicks Dinosaur's butt any day of the week. Compared to Bad to the Bone, the dino's ribs taste like something you would get frozen from Stouffers.
For Fish and Chips in town there are lots of places. The Old Toad on Alexander would be the most authentic place to have fish and chips. The Tap and Mallet on Gregory also has a nice Fish and Chips plate. Almost every Rochester restaurant serves a "fish fry" on fridays but alot of them don't serve malt vinegar with that, so be careful. Only a lemon.

Sorry you missed out on Swan Market, it's the best lunch in Rochester.
