SUNNYSIDE CFC

What is "Sunnyside CFC" and where is it located? Or is all this just a joke?

Pete's Grill in Sunnyside, is this still good?

I found the pancakes at Pete's Grill much too thick and doughy for my taste. The syrup came in a bottle, but the butter was served in individual "patties," which were so difficult to open that I had to ask the waiter for assistance.

New Pete's Grill in Sunnyside, Queens

Has anyone tried the new Pete's Grill, which opened recently in the former premises of the Sunline Diner at 39-14 Queens Boulevard? The building has been re-decorated inside, but retains its "American diner" look and menu, operating 24 hours daily. An uncritical review in the weekly Queens Courier reports Peter Moundros as owner-manager. An average dinner for two with drinks from the full service bar runs just under $50.

Kustard King Alternatives?

There's a soft-serve ice cream place in Coney Island that's excellent. I wish I could remember the name, but it's on Surf Avenue, a block east of Nathan's and on the same side of the street. The place is only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and I haven't been there this year yet, so I can't swear that it's still with us. I always order a large-sized cup of the pistachio flavor, which is well worth the long subway trip out there.

Kustard King Alternatives?

Most McDonald's have a soft ice cream cone for about 99 cents. Although it only comes in vanilla, I find it as satisfying as anything I've purchased from a Mr. Softee truck, which usually charges twice as much.

Le Gamin Cafe in Long Island City

Can anyone comment on Le Gamin Cafe at 10-10 50th Avenue in Long Island City? I've been told that the restaurant is a conversion of the Vernon Theatre, a small cinema that closed decades ago.

Chow Mein-On-A-Bun at Nathan's in Coney Island

Yes, frog legs are still on the menu at the Nathan's in Coney Island, $6.99 for a standard portion and $8.99 for a larger one. There is also a frog leg platter at $7.99. Two other longtime favorites that remain are the lobster sandwich, now $5.99, and the soft-shell crab sandwich, also $5.99.

Chow Mein-On-A-Bun at Nathan's in Coney Island

I noticed yesterday that one of my childhood favorites, the chow mein sandwich, is still served at the original Nathan's in Coney Island, currently priced at $2.99. Has anyone tried it recently? The chow mein is also sold by the bowl for $3.49. I wonder where it comes from?

Best Rotisserie Chicken in Sunnyside

My vote would be for the Pollera Colorada, which seems to use a larger and better quality chicken than Pio Pio Riko. And please try to avoid the rotisserie chickens at the Foodtown, Associated, and Key Food supermarkets in Sunnyside, where are all terrible.

Uncle Spud's closes in Sunnyside, Queens

The site now displays a "For Rent" sign. Unfortunately, the premises are right next to a pet store which sells dogs, cats, birds, and rabbits, some of them displayed in the front window and/or in cages on the sidewalk. It's one of Sunnyside's shoddiest businesses, and may have been responsible for keeping diners away from Uncle Spud's.

Uncle Spud's closes in Sunnyside, Queens

The recent attempt to save the faltering Uncle Spud's in Sunnyside by changing the name to Town Square Diner and adding Italian, Greek and Hispanic dishes to the menu apparently proved unsuccessful. The place is closed tighter than a drum, with all exterior signage removed. Too bad, as the original American fare including cheesesteak sandwiches, funnel cakes, and fish-and-chips was rather good and reasonably priced. The owners must have lost a bundle, as the site, formerly occupied by a meat market, was totally renovated and under construction for more than a year.
