Mango Sticky Rice

I've enjoyed the mango and sticky rice at Thai House on Convoy. And when it is available, the Trader Joe's version isn't bad in a pinch (not fresh and has nutrition info, which ruins some of the fun).

Happy hour Gaslamp District that allow kids for 1/2 price apps or early bird specials

My husband and I hit up the Lincoln Room with our 6 week old for HH! An alternative to the chains.

Old School - Saskas

Mmmm...garlic cheese toast. And I've always loved their roquefort dressing.

Hope this is okay...I'm new here.

Don't know what your definition of "good quality" is, but there are a few local cake & candy supply stores that you could check out. My mother-in-law runs a similar business up in LA, so these are the two businesses that she's had friendly dealings with in the past:

Do It With Icing in Kearny Mesa on Clairemont Mesa Blvd:
www.doitwithicing.com

Standlee's in Chula Vista on 3rd St:
http://www.standlees.com/

I'm pretty sure they both carry Merckens melting chocolate, which is kind of the standard in the cake/candy craft world.

Need 8 good month old friendly spots in San Diego

SEATS at the bar are walk-in now, at least according to this article:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/oct/18/no-rsvps-superdiners-places-dont-take-ressies/

I also read somewhere that they only take reservations a week in advance, now, but don't have any first-hand knowledge of that.

SaltyRaisins - I think you mean Noble Experiment.

nyctot - Text them WELL in advance of when you want to visit if you want a reservation. I believe they are now allowing walk-ins as space allows at the bar only.

On afternoons/evenings with your baby, we've had good luck with a little one at The Pearl in Pt. Loma (only open for dinner - http://www.thepearlsd.com/default.aspx?pg=dine), URBN for pizza and more in North Park (http://urbnnorthpark.com/). You might also like Tender Greens in Pt. Loma, as it's pretty casual and has a nice outdoor area (http://www.tendergreensfood.com/).

Have a nice trip!

Best places for pre-theatre dinner near San Diego Civic Theatre?

I've really tried to give Downtown Johnny Brown's a fair chance. While the beer selection is more than respectable, this really isn't a place to go for good food. I'd say grab dinner elsewhere and hit it up for a drink after the show.

Tapas in San Diego

I'd 2nd Tapas Picasso. I've always enjoyed their sangria, as well.

SUNDAY BRUNCH IN CARLSBAD

I had brunch at the Canyons at The Crossings golf course in Carlsbad about a year ago. Not a super huge, extensive menu (like what you'd get at Spaghettini), but the items they did have were nice, and the view was lovely. It had been between there and Bellefleur when we were making our selection, and we were happy with our decision.

Where's a good place for an Intimate, Beautiful, Tasty Rehearsal Dinner party ?

The Bali Hai has a smaller private dining room upstairs, now. Can't beat the view there!

The Lincoln Room..

We checked it out for Happy Hour last month. Managed to get enough food for 2 and a ginger beer for me for under $20. Peel and eat shrimp (meh, didn't seem too fresh), deviled eggs (very yummy, but I know how some posters feel about paying for deviled eggs), and the deconstructed goat cheese pizza (flat bread with plenty of sides for spreading, also yummy). The drink menu did look good, but I had overindulged the night before.

All-in-all, nothing mind-blowingly original or unique (other than the decor, which is cool), but the food was pretty tasty and a really good deal. Good thing since our parking didn't get properly stamped in the machine at Horton Plaza, and we had to pay full price! I'd go back.

We've regularly used them for group meals at The Pearl. No problems using them, and we've been able to save big $$.

San Diego for a week...with child

O'Brien's and Downtown Johnny Brown's has been fine when we've gone out with our friends and their 2 year old. URBN in North Park, too.

Chef Leaving Cavaillon

We were there last night, too. I may have actually overheard part of your conversation with Lam. :)

Chef Leaving Cavaillon

I wonder what this means about Luc's Bistro?

Cheese Plate...where's the love?

Yes! I love cheese for dessert. Had a very tasty plate for dessert at Tom Ham's Lighthouse at a Restaurant Week preview dinner. Way too much cheese for one girl to eat after a whole dinner, but it was good.

best milkshake?

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit it, but the chocolate malt at Carl's Jr is one of my guilty pleasures. Not a fan of anything else there, but when it comes to a shake, I'd say it stands up pretty well to any of the better, more expensive ones I've had elsewhere.

RIP Knight Salumi

Booooooo...that is really disappointing.

Knight Salumi Co

Went by the Poway Farmer's Market this morning, to see your guy only selling sausage sandwiches and 1 type of salumi. I asked him how the move went, and he said that it didn't go through, and that it would likely be a few more months before things were back to normal. Tell me it isn't true? Visiting the Knight stand is one of my favorite reasons for visiting the market.

Knight Salumi Co

The website is back up. Looks like they've moved to the Miramar area and have a new address and phone number, but what that means...??? Was actually hoping to catch them in Poway this Saturday!

Happy hour/ early bird in SD

Kind of an old topic, but we tried out Analog on Sunday for my husband's birthday, where they have all-day happy hour on Sunday, 4-7 Tuesday to Saturday . While they definitely lean on the kitsch factor of offering tall boy cans of beer, there is a also a pretty decent selection of specialty cocktails featuring interesting ingredients. 1/2 price drinks, 1/2 price starters, and 1/2 price "lil burgers" (an offering of a variety of different fillings from chicken to pulled pork to actual burgers).

Some standouts of the evening for me were the popcorn brussel sprouts (flash fried with bacon bits and parmesan) for $3 on special, and the 2 pack of lil burgers for $3.50 (I got bacon-wrapped meatloaf and a portabello mushroom). The tatchos are good, too.

Our server hooked us up with some Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 on the giant tv hanging over our table, and it was a tasty, fun, and inexpensive night. We'll definitely go back.

ice

Could be a combination of factors, but I've noticed that the ice from my freezer always tastes "bleh" when there hasn't been much of a turnover and it's gotten stale. I'm sure it's sucking up residual stink from whatever is in my freezer (even with baking soda in there). When I host a party, I make a point to dump what I have and start fresh.

Restaurants go through a lot of ice, so the supply is probably always pretty fresh. Plus I'm guessing that their ice makers don't share the same air as their frozen veggies, meats, ice cream, etc.

Moon pies in San Diego

My parents used to buy them for us from Smart & Final when we were kids. Not a huge fan of them, personally, so I've never bothered to look at the ones around here...but it might be a place to check! Good luck.

looking for small food huts or food carts that serve fish (ceviche)

There's a popular stand in the Poway Farmer's Market on Saturday that serves ceviche. My husband and I have been meaning to try it, because everything coming from it looks and smells so good.

Best plate of Fish and Chips

Patrick's Irish Pub in Poway offers a pretty dang tasty fish and chips with a really yummy lemon aioli on the side. A full order is TOO big for me, so I usually go with a half order. They've got a pretty decent selection of other pub food (sausage rolls, scotch eggs, pasties), along with the appropriate HP Brown Sauce.

Beer selection at Costco?

The Costco in Poway had the same surprisingly good selection of local beers (Lost Abbey, Ballast Point, Green Flash) when I visited about a 1.5 weeks ago. One thing to note is that it wasn't with the rest of the beer, but towards the front near the cash registers, over by the vitamins and other personal items. Weird, but there it was. A pleasant discovery.

However, for a good beer selection in Poway, it's all about Distiller's Outlet on Poway Road. The kid running that place has a knack for scoring some awesome stuff!

My 21st birthday 6/26/2010

While I've only been for drinks and the entertainment (which was all fabulously tacky and quite Bedazzled), I might caution that the "tasteful decor" is mostly composed of 60s-era paintings of nude ladies. While my friend and I think it's wildly fun, I don't know how I would have felt dining amongst all that naked glory in the company of older family members when I was 21. Now that I'm in my 30s, maybe...but when I was 21, it would have definitely made me blush.

Classic dive bars and Tiki Bars in San Diego/Oceanside

SD is definitely light on the Tiki Bar scene, but a fun place we visit every now and then is China Inn in Pacific Beach. They serve tropical drinks in tiki mugs and have decent American-style Chinese food. There is always the Bali Hai, which has lost some of it's old-schoolness in the revamp, but is an excellent interpretation of the new-wave Tiki scene (the new lounge is great for drinks).

As for dives...I'll throw out the Alibi (Hillcrest), the Live Wire (North Park-ish), and the Kensington Club (Kensington, obviously). All great places for drinking, people watching, and often good music!

Never been, myself, but my boss who is part of the old-time surfer crowd that hangs around South Mission Beach is always at The Pennant.

Ideas for private dining room - birthday dinner

A slightly different suggestion would be The Pearl in Pt. Loma. They have an outdoor "room" just off the back side of the dining area surrounded by tall bamboo and a nice water feature, which helps to muffle the sound of Rosecrans. The ground is pebble/gravel, which is a little strange, but the fun atmosphere and outstanding food made for a lovely evening when we had a group birthday dinner for my husband back in December. Worth checking out!

A delicious cake for a special occasion

While I haven't had tried their cake, the pastries I've gotten at Swedish Royal Bakery in Poway are pretty outstanding. One of my friends who is a German/Italian transplant swears by them.
