Along the coast from Providence to Mystic
I love oysters! This is one place I really trust them. They are fresh and briney, raw or fried.....I think the specials are pretty imaginative, also. Different methods with the mussels for instance. The atmosphere is one that I miss from the coastline.
Does anyone remember when the Watch Hill Inn was a fishermans bar and the food and prices were great!!
Along the coast from Providence to Mystic
Still say the Seahorse in Noank is awesome! They are also on Restaraunt.Com, so you can get a great deal on a certificate to use. Daniel Packer Inn in Mystic is a big favorite.
Chowfood near Countryside? Griswold Area?
Hi!
Will be camping at Countryside. Griswold, Jewett City area. We saw a BBQ and a couple of of pizza , sandwich places. We love cooking , but will be looking for a few local places if the weather is lousy, etc. Also, any suggestions for a local paper that would list church suppers or events like that? Yeah! Camping season is here!!!!
French Door, Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - New Owners, Please Post
We redid our kitchen about 5 years ago, looks great, appliances are made like crap! I have a lovely freezer on the bottom Amana the sliding rack that holds the veggie, fruit bins fell off this week, can you believe it was GLUED on! What kind of glue will last in a cold damp place like that. The no frost freezer gets ice built up and sounds like a jet taking off. The gasket on the doors gets shredded when you open and close them. Don't even get me started on my stainless cooktop that pitted and had to be replaced in less than a year. Oh, thats right, my Maytag built in oven, $$$$ with a burnt out heating unit. Between the kitchen and the plastic vacum cleaners I go through, I just wish I had kept all my old stuff.
I feel better now..
Sushi in Rhode Island
We have been enjoying China Pavillion in Westerly. They have a seperate Japanese menu. I know this is not sushi, but the soft shell crab is wonderful!
Looking for a recipe - steamed mussels in cream/crabmeat
I have had them at The Seahorse in Noank Ct. At least they sound very familiar. They were steamed with shallots and white wine and then finished with a little heavy cream and a garnish of crab meat and a few chopped tomatos. Probably a fresh herb, basil or parsley?
Looking for a great corn chowder --oh, and a good swordfish marinade too!
That puree looks awesome! Lots of things to do with that, white fish tacos, boring old chicken breasts etc. I agree on the ham steaks, I have also used canned hominy with some additional frozen corn when fresh isn't good.
Looking for a great corn chowder --oh, and a good swordfish marinade too!
I had some leftover corn from the farmers market, it had been lightly steamed. I cut the corn off the cobs and simmered the cobs with some "better than boullion" veggie stock and water, threw in some chopped onion, celery (leaves add a lot of flavor) some dried thyme and red pepper flakes, oregano, pretty much what ever I had. simmer for an hour or so and remove the cobbs and celery leaves. I added chopped carrots, red bell peppers, some quartered baby potatoes, green and yellow squash, you get the picture! Green beans would have been fine and diced sweet potatoes if I had them on hand.
Finished with a little cream, chopped heirloom tomatoes and basil from the brushetta the day before, even a few pieces of fresh mozzerella. Keep tasting for s&p.
"this is the best soup i have ever had!!" from visitors and family. Soup is the most forgiving and satisfying way to celebrate veggie and fresh herb time. Have fun, and do not name it until you can't find anything else to throw in!!
Cherry Tomato Recipes?
I do this as well, but add cleaned mussels or small clams instead of sausage, cover till they open and serve over angel hair pasta. MMM some chopped chorice (sp) sausage would add something special.
Dagwood's sandwich shop
We tried the Palm Harbor location and really liked it! Friendly staff, spotless and overstuffed sandwichs.
Rhode Island Clam Chowder?
At the corner of Charlestown Beach Rd and rt 1A, or Shore Rd,... there is a clam shack that used to be at the right side of the "wall " in Narragansett. They have a choice of all 3 chowders, clear, cream and red. I had the red last week and thought it was pretty good! I like a little more zip myself (I carry a cute little bottle of hot sauce at all times) but the place was really cute, the menu had something for everyone and the prices were OK. BYOB. Enjoy!!
fun waterfront/waterview dining with full bar in RI?
Up River Cafe in Westerly is sure to make you look good! I would call and reserve the space on the patio you need and expect to pay, but the food and atmosphere....I do believe it is my new favorite! Easy to 95 by way of route 2 after.
Jims Dock in Matunick (sp?) is very fun and casual, maybe better after a day of playing in the water. BYOB, so you could be a star by bringing a cooler or 2 with some great wines and beers. Heck, they would probably let you plug in a blender!
Another very good place is Marias in Misquamicut, very pretty outside dining, though it is across the street from the beach. The Pleasantview House has a new chef this year, (Lippy from Rafters) and has been getting some good chatter. Right on the beach, also.
Any one want to share a Pleasant View review?
Iggy's in Narragansett RI
Hi Marco!
Problem posting (again) WB Codys is on route one in Westerly in Dunns Corners, covered wagon out front. I must tell you, the traffic on rt 1 in the southern Charlestown area is horrendous!! I have seen 2 accidents in 2 days. The Cove is at the other (much less crazy) end of Charlestown. Enjoy!
Iggy's in Narragansett RI
The Cove on 1A in Charlestown has been consistantly good lately. WB Codys in Westerly has had whole belly clams as a special the last couple of months, very, very good! I also do not get the Hitching Post thing.......
Pls. help me finalize our trip to Mystic
I would recommend the Seahorse in Noank, or the downstairs pub at the Daniel Packer Inn. Has anyone tried the Seamans Inn recently?? It's right at the Seaport if that is on the trip plan.
Watch Hill/Charleston/Naragansett Food Recs?
The Cove "used to be Halmacks") or something like that! Cute, cozy and great stuffies. Bartender took the clams casino off the bill last week because he didn't like the way it looked after we had asked to have it heated! Sometimes you just want really good fish and chips and this place never has failed.
Watch Hill/Charleston/Naragansett Food Recs?
Hi Jane!
You and I always seem to end up on the same posts, lets do lunch!! Such a pretty day, going to 84 High St tomorrow eve with Sister, hope for a drink and app at Up River first. (Birthday month!) Have you tried the Cove in Charlestown lately? Nice specials, great service from bartenders, (we are bar eaters!) I have never been let down by Guytanos either. Don't let the strip mall location fool you, lol!!
Have been to WB Codys too many times to count, great people, I think they are feeling the pinch from Crapapplebees, yuk! Tried that awful chain 2x, never again. Salad looked like it was scraped off other peoples plates. Strange texture to chicken.
What to do with blue cheese?
Spread a little on a toasted baquett (sp) and drizzle with a little honey...so easy, so good!
Watch Hill/Charleston/Naragansett Food Recs?
Paddys has a great location, but what a tourist trap! Go to downtown Westerly for a nice selection of places. Or on route one on the way to Charlestown is Guytanos, Shelter Harbor Inn, and we have been enjoying the Cove on 1A in Charlestown near the General Stanton Inn, (Also good!) I hope they have the clambakes under the tent on week-ends again this year.
Lobster Roll- Rhode Island
Hey Jane!
I need some lobsters Memorial Day week-end. Can I get as good a price in Matunuck as Pt Judith at the boats? I'm coming from Westerly so the extra time saved would be great, esp with a yard full of hungry people!
Chowder and clamcakes for 100!!!
I work for a non-profit agency and have had many co-workers to my home for chowder and clamcakes. The board would like a price for a meeting next month. I have a HUGE chowder pot and 2 propane burners, so that is not a problem. What I need from you guys are some web sites for quantities, a fair price to pay a helper. and just some price guidelines. I usually use Kenyons Clamcake mix (which I'm hoping to get them to donate, they are located in the next town) and canned clams I pick up when on sale.
Ideas please!!
Do You Use a Toaster Oven?
The last toaster oven I owned was a B&D, I hated it! The bottom of the glass door could not be cleaned and the crumb tray bottom would not stay shut. I ended up with a melted countertop. Just a bad design. Tossed it out and will probably not bother getting another one.
Devilled Egg Discovery!
Beet (red) horseradish gives a nice zip and a pretty pink color. Nice at Easter!
Tomato Pie Recipe
I think I might try the 2nd one. Paula Deens is good, but the amount of Mayo is out of my limits! I like the mustard also....
iso ideas for a retro 1950s bridal shower
The white cake mix with the jello poured over and frosted with cool whip and what ever berries you use for the jello is awesome. Poke holes in the sheet cake, pour on the jello, cool, frost and decorate with berries. What was that crab meat and jar of cheese on English muffins thing, that was pretty yummy!
Tofu - something besides stir fries?
Tofu chili, I don't tell, they don't ask! Just press and crumble, then brown like ground beef.
Stupid baking/cooking mishaps? Share, laugh, and learn
Let me tell you about the first Cajun turkey I made. It was Easter, a few years ago
about the only holiday I was hosting that year and I wanted to try
something different. DH was away on a trip, neither boys around and I
got the worst flu the week before. No one around at all except my best
friend "Bubba", (he is the little dog that liked sports cars) On
Saturday I dragged myself out of bed to shop for equipment and food.
Could not find a thawed turkey or a syringe to inject it with the
seasoning anywhere. Took a turkey home, threw it in a sink full of
water and passed out. Woke up that evening, found an irrigating tube,
(it was in a sterile wrap!) and decided that would do for the syringe.
Mixed up a batch of melted butter and hot sauce, rinsed the turkey and
started trying to inject it. Sucker was still frozen! Started stabbing
it with a knife to make holes for the sauce and cut myself. All this
time my little dog is right at my side. I then took the irrigator and
stuck it in ne of the holes I had stabbed and started pushing the
plunger as hard as I could. The mixture of hot sauce and butter FINALLY
went in one of the holes! Problem was it flew with great force OUT of
the other holes. Windows, walls, floor, me and the poor dog covered
with hot sauce and butter. Bubba, of course, tried to lick it off his
face and ran looking for water. His usual bowls had not been filled so
he had to search through every room.
I cleaned most of the night. guests arrived and were too polite to
mention the pink stain on the walls, floor and dog. DH heated the huge
pot of oil in the back yard per my instructions, lowered the turkey,
flooded the patio with burning oil , tried to put the fire out with WATER,and we then left the rest of the job to the fire department.
I'm exhausted just remembering that day... Should have just taken
everyone to the Seahorse!!
Time for a glass of wine!
Grill is under a foot of snow....help!
George Forman?? A hot cast iron skillet in some clarified butter? Slice thin and saute with onions, mushrooms, peppers? Put in fridge and wait till Tuesday!
Tex Mex backyard birthday cookout
We really like this idea when we camp or cook-out. Split some jalepenos down one side and scoop out seeds, stuff with cream cheese mixed with southwest seasoning, wrap in bacon and attach with toothpick and grill. Omit the bacon and brush with a little oil for the vegetarians. You can sprinkle more seasoning on either for a little more kick.
