Any good restaurants for moms & babies in Pasadena?

Green Street does really nice catering for a group lunch - if it works that you could have a group over to one of your houses (could be more comfortable if there are a *lot* of babies to wrangle). I was really pleasantly surprised. Everyone and their sister loves the Dianne Salad, and it travels well; and I had a rare steak sandwich at a catered affair that was perfect.

Those weird things you eat when you are in your kitchen

I face the same dilemma - I love a super-rare steak, but I love the fat crispy. My husband has taken to holding my steak on edge for a few extra seconds over our very, very hot "big green egg" to get the fat done. I'm a lucky girl.

Who makes your favorite patty melt?

Pie N Burger is my favourite as well. I can get a serviceable one at The Original Tops, and I remember when I worked at JPL there was a super-cheap one in the cafeteria that wasn't bad at all, given the price (but you can't go there unless you work there, IIRC).

Do these nuts in honey require refrigeration?

I found this magnificent product at our wonderful local mixed-ethnic market (it's a little bit Hispanic, a little bit Armenian, a little bit Chinese, a little bit Lebanese...) and no one seems to know if it requires refrigeration. The label is no help, although it promises it will transform me into a goddess. It is, by the way, truly delicious. But I'm not sure how to keep it that way. I know honey on its own doesn't require refrigeration, but with the nuts in it...do I need to eat it in a hurry?

You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...

I've never seen turtle soup at this Brennan's - unless maybe they offer it as the soup of the day on occasion? I'd love to try it!

What do you wipe your counters with?

This is what I use all over my house. They come in different colours here in LA - I use green ones for the floors, blue ones for my counters/sinks, and orange ones to quickly dry off after swimming!

Pro-tip: they are also excellent for drying cats. Like, two swipes and she's dry. A-mazing.

What would Emily Post do? [moved from New Orleans]

Dittos to quine.
And I agree with sanglier about how you have regrets later about how you could pick your words more carefully - but haven't we all been there, when your heart is pounding and you know you have to do..something! It's always remarkable to me how it might only be one in ten people or one in 50 or sometimes none at all who will actually step in and act.
We certainly did that this weekend when 3 screaming kids, banging on impromptu drums and throwing things were making the whole room frantic with misery and absolutely no one did anything. We all just grumbled to each other and rolled our eyes and the parents ignored the hellraiser kids. The most I said was "Why doesn't someone take those kids for a walk?" to no one in particular. Why didn't I go over there and say "please keep it down?" or why didn't I talk to the manager? It's bizarre. We're all held hostage by boors.

Asian Market: Beverages

At my 99Ranch market I like to get the fresh juices. As soon as you walk in the store, by the produce section, there is a counter with someone preparing juices (and there is some packaged in cups on ice). Winter melon was a revelation. OH I want to go get some right now.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Wow, spooky, I'm going there the following weekend with my husband and one of our best friends to celebrate our mutual 40th birthdays. That's why I'm on this board instead of the LA board. Happy Birthday to us all!
Me, I'm looking for some great Greek food (Just not that common in LA). I think I'm headed to Greektown.

626 Asian night market a ZOO!

I've been wishing and hoping for this for years. It's the only thing that would get me to venture back to Old Town on any kind of a regular basis - and Pasadena is my lovely hometown that I hate to mess about in, these days.
I would do pedestrian-only + a trolley.

Gale's in Pasadena- I don't get it

I'm fond of the burrata there. But I honestly can't even remember any other dish I've had at Gale's - I guess that means they have all been forgettable.

Is it just my perception?

Ha ha me too. A good reason to eat these at home. Also so I can get them properly, truly RARE.

Unexpectedly delicious dessert -

Was the apple part heated? If so, you have described one of my favourite desserts -- thanks for the heads-up!

What goes good with chili?

Spaghetti for me, too! With diced onions and cheese, whatever I have on hand. It was Havarti a couple of days ago.

Los Angeles - Scandinavian (preferably Danish or Dutch) Restaurant

We used to have a Konditori in Pasadena as well, on Lake. Lovely swedish pancakes (with lingonberry, of course!) and smørrebrød. sigh.

Best Sandwich in Pasadena?

God yes.
I don't really think of it as a sandwich, either, but yes, go there, do that.

What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?

I knew one of my best friends was going to be a lifetime friend when it turned out our favourite pizza was pepperoni and pineapple. No one else seems to like this combo -- and finally, I had someone to split a pizza with!

Breakfast at Tonny's

I love Tonny's as well. I've tried a few things...shrimp tacos, chilaquiles, but I always come back to the carnitas in handmade tortillas. Really nice with their salsa verde and a sandia agua fresca (it's just watermelon juiced with ice and sugar - why is this so delicious?)

So we have this running joke about how to pronounce the name. Tunny's? Tone - y's? Tawny's? Maybe I don't really want to know and have the mystery continue. We could call on the phone and see what they say. But they might just say, "hello?"

Gordon Ramsay K-Mart commercial

Here's another agree -- I had to furnish an apartment and then a starter house while in grad school, and I did it with Martha Stewart pans. That was in 1998 and I am just now replacing them -- and I've been looking around for a while to get something that is as good of a buy with comparable quality. I decided to go with restaurant gear. It's not pretty but it gets the job done.
I'm hard on my pots and pans, too -- I have very little time for handwashing, so everything goes into the dishwasher, instructions be damned. The MS stuff held up really well.
Maybe the later incarnations weren't as good, but I was very satisfied with everything I bought.

Pasadena area - lunch date

I second Julienne's -- every time I go there, I say to myself, "now, how come I don't come here more often?" I think it just feels out of the way but it really doesn't take long to get there. It's beautiful inside (especially the "library") or outside on the little patio. If you're a local or with a local you'll probably run into a friend there -- I do every time I go. Save room for dessert, it's really worth it.

Mrs. Cubbison's Herb Seasoned Cube Stuffing Mix vs Kellogg's Stuffing Mix

I agree wholeheartedly. Now that I live in L.A. again it isn't a problem -- they sell it everywhere -- but for a while I lived on the East Coast and you couldn't buy it there. I had to bribe people to smuggle it to me in their suitcases or I would bring back a half-dozen boxes with me on each visit.
Also -- I definitely prefer the "dressing" to the "cube stuffing." Time was I couldn't be picky, but now I can just drive to another store if one place happens to be out of my preferred bird filler.
I doctor it up with the ratio: 1 cup diced celery sauteed in 1 stick of unsalted butter for 3 minutes, then add 1 cup of diced onion, add sprinkling of salt, pepper, and sage, saute for another 3 minutes or so. Add 1 cup of homemade stock -- this makes a huge difference in the flavour. This for every bag of dressing. I usually just need one bag of dressing for a smallish (8 lb) turkey.

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

"a better, cheaper yum elsewhere." This is it, exactly. By walking just a block or two in any direction of this particular Denny's, you can find so much better food, cheaper. Especially in these tough times - when none of us has money to throw away!

Why would anyone go to Denny’s these days?

I was wondering this exact thing the other day. I went to Pho79 in Alhambra, stuffed myself silly for under 10 bucks, and then walked down Main St and passed of all things, a Denny's. It's just so incongruous to find it there sandwiched around gems like Pho79 and I'll even include The Boiling Crab which, although it is a chain, has a lot of flavour. Who would drive up and down that street and stop at....DENNY'S. But I looked in the window and yes, there were quite a few people there, eating fake mashed whatever. Ech. I just felt so sorry for them. I knew they were each about to pay at least double what I just paid for my magnificent meal and they were getting such a bland forgettable experience in return.

Is there a name for this style of feeding oneself?

I recently was heading to Paris and I was reminded by a French friend of mine that yes, it is customary to keep your hands up on the table "in clear view" so it is obvious you aren't trying something suspicious with your other hand other the table! :) She was making a little joke but also being quite serious about the custom to remind me of my manners (not to seem out of place). But I use both hands while eating anyway (fork in left hand, knife in right, certainly no switching involved!) so for me it is a non-issue.

Dinner Near Caltech

For very casual, I'd pick Pie N Burger. Pricier but still relatively casual (you should be wearing business casual to fit in): Smitty's. Both are American food done right.

Is there a name for this style of feeding oneself?

I'm exactly the same as Ms Biscuit - I'm right-handed, but I need to hold my fork (tines down) in my left hand, knife in my right. I'm impossibly clumsy if I try to eat with my fork in my right hand. Yet I eat soup and cereal with a spoon in my right hand, as you might expect.
I'm American, but I was raised by a Canadian mum and my father was half British, so I suppose this way of eating was inevitable.
I do a little of the deliberate flavour-mixing on the fork, as well.

Copper River salmon at CostCo now

Yes! Success! We're grilling it today over natural charcoal.

Dissapointing Dinner at Friends House

Absolutely true, DougRisk -- I was secure enough in my relationship with my mum to say - let's add less oil than the recipe says, it's a non-stick pan, or -- don't you think this other veggie would go better in this dish? We cooked *together* and could share ideas about food without there being some weird subtext.
I could never say anything like this to my inlaws, because it would be taken badly.

Dissapointing Dinner at Friends House

Chili on a potato is one of my favourite things ever! I would be thrilled to have that at a friend's house.

Now I'm tempted to write a sonnet with nake-d rhyming with bake-d. That sort of thing happens all the time in Shakespearean sonnets! :)

Chiming in to say...I find myself in the same position as the Original Poster -- ever since we moved into a house instead of an apartment, we now have a defacto superior cooking/grilling/eating area, and we just plain like to do it/ and are better at it than most of the other people we know, because we practice a lot. And while our friends are great at going out to eat at interesting restaurants (thank God), I've only eaten snacks at their places.

Dissapointing Dinner at Friends House

Ha ha aha!! You can laugh about it now! Still, a cautionary tale. I'm making dinner reservations for my 40th (next year) NOW.
