Wattacetti,

Thanks for the rec. I'm looking forward to trying the Canadian wine.

Birthday Dinner in Montreal

Maximilien,

The most important thing is the food. Then service, wine, and atmosphere.

I actually have links to all of the places that I listed but was in a rush to post. We are leaving in a little over a week and forgot about booking a table at a restaurant for my birthday. We've already decided against Le Club Chasse et Peche and Au Cinquieme Peche. I'll take a look at Le Filet. Thanks!

Birthday Dinner in Montreal

My husband and I are going to Montreal at the beginning of July. During our visit, I'm having a birthday and I need a little help. We normally go to a very nice restaurant for birthdays and we have narrowed down our choices to the following four restaurants:

Lemac
LePorte
DNA
Piment Rouge

I'm leaning towards LePorte or Lemac. Any thoughts on these restaurants? Did I miss anything really special? (We also considered Kitchen Galerie, Joe Beef, and Trois Petite something or other).

Thanks!

Andouille in Monmouth County

I've had both DO & the Applegate Farms Andouille in the last few weeks and I have to say that the DO sausage was far superior.

Bienvenue Restaurant French Cuisine Red Bank

I ate at La Petite several times and enjoyed it. Beinvenue was a disappointment the one and only time I ate there but a new owner sounds promising. Of course, my most favorite place was Indigo Moon but that closed two and a half years agoI

Oh, and I have been to Le Fandy but our meal was terrible.

Niko's Trapezi A Greek Taverna Long Branch NJ

A few Friday's ago my husband and I where having our usual Friday night debate, where to go to dinner. Finally we decided to give Niko's a try since I had read some many great things about it on this site.

We were really impressed with the menu and did not know where to start! We decided to do a few appetizers. We had the Pikilia (assortment of dips, served with pita), fried calamari, Soutzoukakia Smirneika (meatballs with cumin in tomato sauce), and Saganaki (crispy fried cheese). Everything was so awesome! The standout for me were the meatballs. I really, really, loved them. My husband really enjoyed his calamari. It was light and crispy. Cooked to perfection. My husband thought for sure that he would get a gyro after the apps but boy, was he wrong. We were quite full but decided to have desserts anyway. I had the cookie assortment (loved the powder sugared ones- I could only eat 2) and DH had the custard with the phyllo. Fabulous. We will be going back very soon.

Also, the staff at the restaurant were friendly, knowledgeable and patient. (So very unlike the surly staff at IGTM)!

TASTE - Red Bank

Yes, my husband and I ate there last night. They have only just opened so they only had a "tasting" menu. The menu consisted of a few each of soups, salads, brushetta, cold apps (antipasto) sandwiches (wraps or panini) and pizzettes. There is a full bar and a very nice wine list (both by the glass and by the bottle). We opted for a bottle of Michael ^ David Zin from Lodi. Fabulous! We shared two apps, classic tomato brushetta which was delicious and a app called Taste "That" which consisted or artichoke hearts with parm (I'm not an artichoke lover but they were very good), roasted peppers (delicious!), proscuitto & provolone stuffed hot cherry peppers (I LOVED this) and fresh mozzarella (so fresh, so creamy, so great) with a really good balsamic. For our main meal, I had a classic pizzette (Margarita) and my husband had a sirloin & port salut (cheese) wrap with carmelized onions and a big dish of cole slaw. The pizzette was very crispy and quite tasty and my husband loved his sandwich. We will definitely be going back. They also had a limited desert menu but nothing that my chocoholic husband was interested in (Mango/Strawberry Sorbet, Malted Milk Gelato, and a peach and strawberry pie). We paid the check and were finishing our wine when the server brought over a small sample of pound cake desserts that they will be offering after they have their grand opening (Dec 16). It was three small slices of pound cake each topped differently. There was a chocolate peanut butter (I loved this and so did my husband who DOES NOT like peanut butter), chocolate and coconut (my favorite) and chocolate and walnut (I did not get any of this). So, overall a really good experience and I would recommend trying it out.

Bandu Restaurant in Middletown, NJ

My DH and I went there last night for dinner. This was our third and possibly last time. We started with soup. I had egg drop (a favorite since childhood) and my husband ordered the pork with fresh noodle soup. Well, my egg drop had very little flavor and my husband did not get what he ordered. He got a soup with bok choy, tofu, and egg. No noodles or pork to be found! He ate it anyway. It was actually pretty good. For entrees I ordered Szechaun Chicken and he ordered mixed seafood and veg in an earthen bowl. Our dinners arrived and my entree looked like either sweet and sour chicken with broccoli or a version of Szechuan that I have NEVER seen and my husbands was simply HUGE. I think it could probably feed 2-3 people easily. Anyway, I start eating and the chicken has this really weird texture. It looked fried but wasn't crispy at all. It was actually mushy. After a few minutes, the manager (I think) came over and explained to me that the waiter had given me the wrong thing. It was actually fish and not chicken at all. So he offered to replace it with the correct dish. It only took about 3-4 minutes and he came out with the chicken and a fresh bowl of rice. As he is placing it in front of me, he says, "Here is your Hunan Chicken. I apologize for the mix up." I thank him and then tell him that I actually ordered the Sezchuan Chicken, not Hunan. Needless to say, he looked stricken. He offered to once again replace it with the correct dish but I declined. I told him it looked delicious. It was pretty good but like another poster said, there isn't very much sauce. My husband enjoyed his dish well enough but he would never order something like without sharing it with someone. All in all, a half way decent meal (despite the mix ups) but I don't know if that is enough for us to return.

The best part of the meal was the fortune cookie. Mine said "Fortune Not Found: Abort, Retry, Ignore?" I think it was a sign...

Authentic Mexican Food in Monmouth Cty

boodie, there is NO comparison to be made. Juanitos, in my opinion, has gone steadily down hill. NOTHING has any flavor at Juanitos except the salsa that you get with the chips. The rice is bland, the refried beans are bland, everything is just about bland. We started eating at La Chalupa down the street 3 years ago and what a difference! Of course, La Chalupa has changed hands and is now Senior Peppers. Since it changed hands, we thought that we would give Juanitos another shot. Well, we should have gone to Taco Bell. That's all I'll say. We recently tried Senior Peppers and it was not very good. I ordered by favorite mexican dish, cheese enchiladas, and they were terrible. I can make better enchiladas at home and I'm Irish! Getting back to your question, El Meson is fantastic! We just starting eating there in the last year and EVERY single meal has been fabulous! Please, don't waste your time with Juanitos. Stick with a restaurant that knows how to cook!

Yes, they still exist. I've had their pizza but I don't remember it. Maybe I'll try it again this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!

Good Pizza in Tinton Falls/Shrewsbury Area

Yep, that's the place that was where CJ Montana's is now. I was not impressed with the pizza and I think it was quite pricey ($16 for a medium pepperoni) but thanks for the suggestion!

Good Pizza in Tinton Falls/Shrewsbury Area

I have lived in Tinton Falls (off of Hope Road) for about 5 years now and cannot find any really good pizza in the area. I've tried Ninette's, Danny's, Frederico's, Red Bank Pizza, Brother's Siinos and the place that was in the same building as CJ Montanas that has another location in Lincroft and all of them are marginal at best. I've heard mixed things about Rosina's (on Shrewsbury Ave) and Guiseppi's (I think that's the name) in Eatontown. I love a pizza with a thick, tender but chrisp crust. One of my favorite places in Monmouth County is Serpico's in Allenhurst but it takes about twenty to thirty minutes from my house and I would like to find someplace local that delivers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best burger in Mon/OC?

There are 2 places that my husband and I go for burgers. We LOVE the burgers at Basil T's but they are expensive ($14-16) so we only go once in a while. We also love the burgers at the Poor House in Shrewsbury and go there once a week (not always for burgers). We have tried other places in the area but have not found anything that compares with these two places.
