Beso. Anything worth eating?

While I wouldn't select this place on my own, an out of town guest would like to treat me to dinner at Beso. I can't turn down a free dinner, right?

I've heard mixed reviews about the food. You see, I'm a Texas girl, used to quality Tex-Mex grub. Does anyone have a recommendation for an enjoyable entree at Beso? Unfortunately I don't eat seafood, but everything else is fair game.

Thoughts?

New to LA (Burbank), some specific questions (Long)

mygirlbakes AL, I'm having the same exact problems finding good Mexican and BBQ! I just moved from Texas about 6 months ago. My friends and I usually end up going to Gordon Biersch for that BBQ sandwich and garlic fries. Most dishes at the brewery are a little overpriced but sandwiches are pretty reasonable.

NOT a BBQ place but I remember having some yummy cornbread at Bandera on Wilshire near Brentwood. They have this bread plate that it comes on with olives and guacamole.

Santa Monica restaurants for Texas visitor

Yes to Jake Gyllenhaal, we are only human! Used to see him a lot in Brentwood, but no sighting lately. Cafe Luxxe looks like something we will have to check out.

Great sugguestions!

If it helps, I believe we are going to stay at Loew's in Santa Monica. What's the word on their Ocean & Vine restaurant. Pretty pricey? Is it worth it?

Santa Monica restaurants for Texas visitor

A friend of mine will be visiting from Texas the first weekend in May and I'd like to take her to some fun, moderately priced restaurants while we're in Santa Monica. I live in the Valley but we'll be getting a hotel on the beach in SM during the weekend.

Any suggestions for an afforable breakfast, lunch and dinner, perhaps one of them on the beach so we could walk? We're both mid-twenties on a budget so would love a hip dinner spot that won't cost too much over $35 per person. Please no Mexican, as she's from Texas and there's plenty of that around those parts. She's never been to LA so will be interested in the slightly touristy "LA" places but only if the food is great and the price is right.

Lunch ideas for Studio City

Haven't tried the turkey burger at Aroma Cafe but I love this sandwich they offer which is kind of a turkey melt with hummus inside. Yum!

Also, if you're looking for something to do after lunch then the attached bookstore is worth a visit.

Bowling Alley cuisine

I like the looks of Lucky Strike from the website and based on these suggestions I'm going to give it a try. Thanks to all for the help!

Vegetarian Cooking Class

There is actually a woman who does occasional cooking demonstrations at Whole Foods who also teaches private customized cooking classes on her own. She goes to your home and teaches you the benefits of your fruits, veggies, herbs and spices and specializes in vegetarian cuisine. Her company is called Love Cooking for You. Definitely give her a call to see if her class is what you're looking for. The number is 818-624-2258 and her name is Liila. Hope this helps!

Covered patios?

Ski Shores Waterfront Cafe on Lake Austin is dog friendly as long as they remain on the leash. Amazing burgers and good fries. Fried okra is yummy too and the pizzas aren't bad. I think there's something called the Border Burger that my whole family loves. Ski shores has a small covered patio but it is right on the lake so you might avoid if it's really stormy and I think they probably even shut down in heavy rain since the majority of seating is outside. It's a tiny place and usually crowded in the summer so be prepared to wait a little for your order if you go then. Right now they are most likely in off-season hours which are Thurs-Sunday.

Bowling Alley cuisine

Looking for a fun place to celebrate my birthday and have this image of a nice (non-smoky, maybe adults only) bowling alley that serves more than just beer and pizza. Does this exist? Perhaps good cocktails and tasty appetizers to enjoy while bowling some strikes. I live in the Valley but would be willing to travel over the hill for something good. Any suggestions?
