I love Chai's and saw Nathan Aweau there last visit. But no car this time and my mission is to try to make HNL easy for long weekends!

Thanks for the tips! We have been to Ko Olina and love it but not this trip. And for a real first in Hawaii (trips every year) I will not have a car. This is just a quick weekend solo trip because I miss the islands so much! But have added Heeia Pier to my general Oahu travel notes and will check it out next trip.

Ah, got it.I suppose that is right that the music is more for the tourists and on the beach in Waikiki, where RH and HWAK don't need to have happy hours! The Kani Ka Pila Grille suggestion at the Outrigger is a great one and I will try Rumfire too. Will also watch for Corey Oliveros who I have not heard of - he is playing some afternoon gigs at Moana Surfrider and Sheraton Edge Bar so mahalo for the tip.

Actually I assumed I was not looking for the impossible but just maybe the unknown. The last Ritz Carlton I stayed at had a wonderful happy hour and the high end steak house around the block had another really great one. Of course these were in the mid-west and not Hawaii, but I have found that the nicer hotels often have really worthwhile, but not well publicized, happy hours in lovely places. I don't know Waikiki that well so was just looking for something other than the HWAK or RH that I may have missed.

Coming for a long weekend soon on a little more of a budget than usual, and interested in where some of the better happy hours are, i.e. not the ones with beer and shots but also need not be ultra cheap. Some examples would be the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai Bar and the House without a Key - except that they do not have happy hour pricing, and I would prefer not to pay $14 for a drink.
Ideally would like Hawaiian music in a nice atmosphere. Any ideas about the higher end hotels or places that might be a little under the radar for this? Mahalo!
48 hours in San Antonio, help me narrow it down
Another update: I thought Rosarios was terrible. Loud, neon, food really disappointing. Tito's down the street a little further had better food and is in a great old building.

I wanted to love, or at least like Rosarios, but my advice to out of towners is to either spring for a cab and go someplace really good (there is undoubtedly good Mexican somewhere else in the area) or just skip it. I really wanted to like this place and walked a mile from my hotel to get there thinking it was a local sort of place. It was loud, seemed to be full of tourists or local groups of young office types and the food was very ordinary at best. Granted, I live in San Francisco, but the mole tasted like someone made it with Hershey's chocolate syrup and the salsa was less than mild. When I asked for something spicier she brought me raw jalapenos and even those were quite mild. Really disappointing. I went to a place right across the river from the Hilton the last time I had this meeting and the food was better.

Thank you rlm. Perfect link and suggestion. I went and thought it was wonderful. Small and unpretentious, but they take reservations and the food was San Francisco quality without the premium prices. I would recommend it. About a 13 min drive (easy) from the Boadmoor and worth the trip.

Bristol, CT area - pizza and other suggestions
We made it to Garlic Jack's on Friday which was a good choice for the evening. Wait for dinner at 7 pm about 20 minutes. Food mostly perfectly good (pizza only so so) and portions were HUGE! Really enough food for 2 - all of them. Service quite good and it fit the bill quite nicely. We had reservations for Anthony Jack's for Saturday but then the Giants won the playoffs and were in the world series, so we wen to Sliders, a sports bar in Plainfield. Food also pretty decent for a sports bar with good service and very accomodating staff. They sat us (me the SF resident) right in front of the TV and checked in periodically. The last night we were all so tired we ended up at the restaurant at the Farmington Marriott (my family are not really foodies) , which was actually quite good.

Given that we will likely be moving and hauling all day, probably not more than 10 or 15 minutes. I'm perfectly happy with both thin crust and deep dish!
Thanks to hotwing for the suggestion about Joey Garlics. Does anyone know anything about Vito's? They take reservations on Open Table, which is always a plus when coming from out of town.

Spending this weekend in Bristol with my sister helping my niece move there to work at ESPN. We will be spending the days getting her moved and settled and would love some suggestions for good places to eat in the area. Friday is always pizza night for me so a good pizza place is a must. Would really love it if it were someplace we could get reservations, or at least not have to stand in line forever. Saw that Vito's is on Open Table -- how is it as a place to eat?
Any other ideas for good food? (Went to medical school in the area a long time ago, and I had no money so never ate out around there). Ethnic OK but not first choice. Similarly, don't want to go especially high end; just want some non-chain, local place ideas. THANKS for any help!

The good news about Dinette was that the food was very good. Pizza was stellar and the salad was also great. The wine by the glass was good and about as reasonably priced as they get these days.
The bad news was that it is not so easy to get here if you are from out of town. The cab driver had no idea where it was (even on the phone to dispatch) and she dropped me in the area at my request so I could just use my iPhone to find it. The valet parking guy at a restaurant 100 feet away had no idea either. Turns out it is above a Kinkos and across the parking lot from a Border's. Service rather perfuncctory and if you are looking for interesting atmosphere or a cool vibe this is not the place. There is a bus that goes nearby that I took back. Would never have found a cab.

Thanks CrazyOne. Just what I needed to know. I have just about given up getting cabs to restaurants in mid-sized towns (i.e. places other than NYC, Chicago etc.) It is always a big pain to get back, often expensive, and it raises my expectations of the restaurant because it is so much trouble. But for good pizza I will probably make an exception :-))

Thank you all again. Here is the report for future Galleria travelers (all dinner $$ are including tip):
Goode BBQ (Kirby Rd) – went there by cab at 8 pm the night I arrived (Luiling for all its controversy is not open very late). Ended up being a $28 cab ride round trip (with some evening surcharge and a modest tip and I had to call the driver for the return) and an underwhelming dinner. The place was empty at 8:30 and what little charm it might have had was dwarfed by its location at the crossroads of streets of strip malls. Food was OK, and inexpensive, but not impressive to me. Gave up on both BBQ and cab rides after that until I end up in some other area of Houston someday. (Dinner total with 2 glasses of wine – it had been a long day ☺ -- $20)
Next night was a meeting related dinner in the JW Marriott that was surprisingly good.
Del Frisco – went after a reception for a light dinner. Classic old style steak house. Had the wedge salad (w/blue cheese of course) which was HUGE, fresh and very good and the crab cake (4 oz) appetizer. Served with a warm loaf of bread was all I needed for dinner and I left half the salad. Expensive, but fabulous, wine list. (Bill with 1 modest glass of wine ~$ 52)
RDG Annie’s Bistro – we had a private dining room dinner here for 45. Food was very good, though very pricey. Service excellent and the scene was fun, especially as we were leaving closer to 10 pm. Uber trendy, and quite the scene for clothes and cars. Outdoor deck looked appealing. (We had passed appetizers and regular looking steak and salmon dinners. Bill was $105 for those without drinks/wine and $140 with.)
Arcodoro – old style Italian restaurant in a shopping mall just down the road from the Marriott (although in contrast to Goode’s, once you walk through the front door you would never know it). It was Sunday night and I found a restaurant menu on the web that indicated it had wood fired pizza, but that did not turn out to be true. Old style ambiance and service. Classic menu with a whole page of newly minted olive oil specialties. Large mixed salad was perfectly decent and my carbonara was very good. The $9 glass of Chianti was horrible and if a colleague had not come up to chat just as I was getting into it I would have asked for something else. ($52 with 1 glass of wine).

Thanks all!! We have an abundance of great food and great ethnic food in SF but not much BBQ, southwest etc. The joy of traveling for me is eating regional food and I try to find good local eats as much as possible. These ideas and info are a big help.

I am appently not entirely sure of the difference. Where I am (San Francisco) there are Mexican restaurants, and when I have traveled to the Southwest, the local cuisine seems very similar .... maybe I am thinking of TexMex, which is similar in style rather than "NewMex" which is different (?)

Sorry if this is too much of a repeat, but have looked through the posts and am still not so clear about folks consider to be the best of the Mexican restaurants in Santa Fe. I really wanted some place that would take a reservation and Bistro du Coin was PERFECT. Food was quite good, it was remarkably affordable, very lively and very French. The girls loved it and I would recommend it.

Prix Fixe dinner deals in Manhattan ?
We had a wonderful meal at Telepan tonight that was an incredible deal: $39 for 3 courses (served until 6:30 Mon-Thurs). We are here from San Francisco and have a couple of other week nights and would love any suggestions for other deals like that. (We found this one by hapenstance by looking on their website and a web and Chow search did not turn up much.) It is a bit last minute, but we don't mind eating early and would rather spend the money on plays!
