Challah Dough-Egg Noodles?

I LOVE the idea of challah dumplings as well! For better or worse, I went to the store and grabbed some egg noodles. The dish is already somewhat labor intensive with shredding the chicken (http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/20...) and I will freely admit to being pooped from this cold. It's definitely on the list, though!

Do some foods make you more sad to "throw out" than others?

I moved across the country to care for an ill family member for an extended period. Before I put everything I own into storage I gave away thousands of dollars worth of ingredients--from basic flour and sugar, to the most gourmet and expensive specialty items--to a very poor family. The husband, who was someone who wanted to be a foodie but couldn't afford to be one, was the only thing that made it less painful. At least I knew that family was _really_ going to appreciate it!!! I'll say this, though, it was a lot harder to give up all the specialty items than it was the flour and sugar!!!

Challah Dough-Egg Noodles?

A bad cold, not enough time, you know the story...So, can I use some challah dough I have in the freezer to make egg noodles for my chicken soup? The doughs for challah and egg noodles are probably substantially similar, I figure. I'm thinking to try it, but has anyone tried this before and ended up with a terrible result?

I appreciate the suggestion, but having had the real stuff I'm pretty sure this would be a poor substitute. I don't think the mix and a month's wait can substitute for aging in oak! And for better or worse I'm not about to search out my own casks. :) I'll wait for the real thing and until it appears, just lust after it!

The hard debate over nutrition standards for food stamp benefits

Bottom line is that disallowing the use of food stamps for garbage food likely wouldn't affect obesity rates or rates of its related diseases. People will just use their money (and yes, everyone has some, even people on food stamps) to buy plenty of crap. Unfortunately, the problem is about more than making bad choices. It's about knowing what constitutes a healthful meal, about knowing how to prepare such meals, about having/making time to prepare these meals, having the organizational brainpower to plan for a shopping trip with a meal list in mind, etc. There are a whole set of life skills that many people lack, and many who probably don't wish to acquire them. It's also about changing a culture of unhealthfulness to one that shops and eats with care and consideration. Sad, but true. Just like Bloomberg's attempted soda ban, I think this would be an ineffective way of addressing the problem.

Any clue on what's going on with this? I still only see sherry wine vinegar (gross). Since I'm cooking for someone who keeps kosher at the moment I've have to banish all my great recipes that include sherry vinegar. I still haven't seen it anywhere.

Fage yogurt- kosher

I've never seen Fage with a hechsher before. Pity, too. I LOVE their 0% and 2% for eating with apples, walnuts and maple sugar, and use it all the time as a healthy sub for sour cream in recipes but can't use it when I'm cooking for a kosher crowd. :( I can't find anything online--did they recently get a hechsher?

Thanks! What a great idea to look for "all purpose seasoning."

I'm sure it's in Lawry's or similar products--my problem is finding a container of only MSG (like the kind I've seen in my Thai friends' kitchens--bins on the counter labeled "flour, salt, sugar," and "msg" respectively). :)

I've never heard of Smart and Final in NY but I'll be keeping my eyes open for all purpose seasoning!

Freezing Italian Meringue Buttercream

I've seen so many websites that say it's ok to make a Swiss or Italian MBC and freeze it--just re-whip before frosting your cake. What I can't seem to find the answer to is, is it ok to frost a cake with IMBC and then freeze it? Will the frosting be edible when I defrost the cake or will it be grainy or fall apart? Your expertise would be appreciated, CHOWhounders!
