Coffee Roaster in ABQ

My favorite espresso in New Mexico is Holy Spirit Espresso, hands down. Second place is Giuseppe. Third place is.... no one. But I ought to check out Michael Thomas again.

Taos eats

Where did you go?

a dinner and breakfast in ABQ and SF

finlero's are good; here are a few more:
ABQ: Jennifer James 101 (Tues-Sat evenings, get a reservation!)
SF: Tecolote Cafe, Real Food Nation (x100 - they are truly amazing)

Best food at ABQ brewery/brewpub

There have been a few people that have favorably compared Farina with Pizzeria Bianco. I've had both, and both are VERY good. One of them does not have a 90 minute wait, usually. :-)

Hot hot hot - who's hottest in Albuquerque?

New update on the New Mexican front - Cecilia's red chile has gotten WAY wicked hot in recent months. I love super hot stuff, and a bowl of her red w/ beans caused me some, um, GI discomfort that I wasn't expecting.

It was worth it, though. :-)

Forque - ¿Qué? (Albuquerque)

I left with a better impression of the food, but yes the items can really add up when you get a look at the final bill.

There is someone in the kitchen who knows flavor combining, but they've got some plating issues that are not hard to fix. Overall, I think it is a good addition to downtown.

Hot hot hot - who's hottest in Albuquerque?

I'm on the hunt for the most incendiary dishes in Albuquerque. Doesn't even have to be New Mexican (I'm aware that only Horseman's Haven has anywhere near the Scoville rating of some Thai dishes).

So, let me have it - what's your favorite?

My last visit I found the red at Sadie's to be pretty hot, and my previous pick for green was Perea's but I haven't been there so I will not speak to its current quality.

For sheer hot hot hot, I think I've had a Szechwan pepper dish at Chopstix, and then there's always the "Thai +" levels at Thai Tip.

Vietnamese in ABQ?

Kim Long Asian on San Pedro
Viet Taste on Menaul
Pho Linh on Central for 7 Courses of Beef

Albuquerque is a crazy Viet-friendly town.

Best food at ABQ brewery/brewpub

I am not even a beer person and I've been blown away by the selection and PAIRINGS at Cowgirl Cafe in Santa Fe.

ABQ-content: Farina Pizzeria for probably the best pizza in the city (if you like Napoli style), and the owner Stewart is a brilliant pairing guy, for both beer and wine.

Albuquerque Birthday Cake?

I'd second the Maxime recommendation, but for a slightly less customized take, I think that Flying Star's cakes are insanely good, and pricey. Essentially you get what you pay for - French butter, organic eggs, etc etc.

Known Albuquerque Food Trucks?

http://abqfoodcarts.com/

Official grand opening was on the 27th with the mayor in attendance. Normal hours 10am-6pm Wednesdays only.

StreetFood Asia - Albuquerque

I've been. Story at 11. ;-)

Coffee Roaster in ABQ

The original roaster for Ohori's is on her own, selling very darkly roasted beans in a billion varieties at Moon's Coffee & Tea on Juan Tabo.
- Michael Thomas Coffee
- Satellite is OK
- Fat Boy Coffee Roasters (and Fat Boy Cafe) in Cedar Crest

Looking for good Veg Friendly in Albuquerque NM (and Santa Fe)

I second the MuDu recommendation, and demur on the Tofu Scramble at Flying Star - just had it and it's OK. Granted, if you're eating out and need a vegan option, great. But I could make better at home in 15 minutes.

Liver in ABQ

Cafe Jean-Pierre near Century Rio does a good homestyle braised liver dish with caramelized shallots.

Nicky V's on the Westside [ABQ]

Deb, you hit the nail on the head with the gelato - it is made by VanRixel Bros, and uses cream, so many would say that it is technically not gelato, but rather some kind of ice cream. (Their flavor combinations are quite good, however)

Anyway, YES, Nicky V's pizzas and the crust are amazing. Oh, that crust.... my new favorite in town. Favorite specialty pizza has roasted squash and arugula on it.

Albuquerque - All Stars?

Absolutely not. Never forget about the homemade and often-sold-out pies at Asbury Cafe.

(as a side note, I don't think there is anything wrong with a turkey drumstick. At least it's real food.)

OK, here goes nothing...best pizza in NM?

I agree that my Venezia's experience has been very good. Really chewy crust - which makes a NY style slice sooooo good.

For Neopolitan ultra-thin crust, its Farina, hands down. Nearly (maybe) as good as Pizzeria Bianco in PHX.

Restaurants in Santa Fe and ABQ with house-made flour tortillas?

Duran's Central Pharmacy in downtown ABQ. Their tortillas meet my "must have" qualifications - the "I'm not a huge fan of X, but I couldn't stop eating X at this place!!!"

(Maybe that concept needs its own thread!) :-)

Mad Max's BBQ Albuquerque (Rio Rancho)

Heh, good question. I'm going to guess the co-owner, but weirdly the disconnect hadn't hit my thought process until you mentioned it.

Mad Max's BBQ Albuquerque (Rio Rancho)

Mad Max's will change names in the next month or two to Pete's BBQ. No relation to "Pete's Home of the Half-Breed" (hehe).

New owner Dan Torres bought the recipes, the restaurant, and was trained by Max and Fran. Hope he can keep up the legend....

Mad Max's BBQ Albuquerque (Rio Rancho)

There's an urbanspoon comment from someone claiming to be the daughter.... saying Mad Max's has sold ownership.

Anyone have more details or have you eaten there very recently?

It’s not food if ...

He hits the blueberries and the blue cheese argument in one fell swoop.

Penzey's Spices catalog--is it just me?

Heh, nice. :-) I've always found the photos in the catalog and magazine to be the worst possible quality - whomever is calling the artistic shots doesn't appear to be a lover of actually eating food.

Curb Salt Use - Yay or nay?

What MandalayVA meant (I think) is that when using iodized/standard table salt to a dish you use more, not because its not salty, but the SIZE.

The crystals are tiny and dissolve easily. Kosher or flaked sea salt is big and crunchy and has a lot more mouth appeal with less total amount added.

I think that's the gist.... :-)

Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)

This is one of my most favorite threads, ever! *grin*

My mom generally was OK - her lasagna was delicious even though it had cottage cheese in it. Other "oddities" (though not as impressive as some of the stuff here!!!):

Cherry Cheesecake - my favorite dessert for many years. I only found out later that real cheesecake is baked, when I heard this I thought, "but it would MELT!". My mom's cheesecake filling was a mixture of cool whip and cream cheese. Teeth-aching sweet.

Cherry Chocolate cake - just a box of chocolate cake mix with a can of cherry pie filling added - the cherry flavor was inbeued in the cake and the cherries themselves sank to the bottom for a moist treat.

How about my dad? He could make some interesting stuff:

meatloaf-stuffed green peppers that forever made me hate cooked bell peppers - icky and bitter (though I love bitter melon now)

"pigs in a blanket" - pounded out chuck wrapped with bacon, except the chuck got tough and the bacon was mushy and fatty.

Oh, and the idea of building flavor through sauteeing, fat, heat, etc - not employed. Every single one-pot meal was started with a pot of water. THEN the aromatics were added to the cold water before the stove even started.

The fact that I can still eat canned mushrooms is amazing, however. :-)

Beef Liver - Do you choose to eat it?

Wow, great list of recipes - thank you for putting that together!

Oh Denver, we're hungry.

Mexican hasn't been covered yet!

My personal fave: Tacos Y Salsas.
http://www.westword.com/content/printVersion/504890

Simply the best real-deal tacos, variety meats included, and they serve alcohol all the time (?). Cheap, cheap, cheap. On Federal Blvd, where many good ethic eats can be found.

Any rec's for Albuquerque and Santa Fe New Mexico??

Mary & Tito's. Fantastic red chile.
Cecilia's Cafe. Again, fantastic red (& carne adovada)
Golden Crown Panaderia (green chile cheese bread, pizzas)
Frontier Restaurant (ain't gonna get more "only in Albuquerque" than this.)

Dinner near ABQ airport?

Just WEST of the interstate on Central Ave is the best Naples style thin crust pizza this town has to offer: Farina Pizzeria.

Excellent salads, appetizers, and local beer/wine list, too.
