Sichuan/Yunnan Cold Table Items

Thanks everyone.
I know there's a bit of an etiquette to certain things, but it sounds like this is more like an unusual request. And, ordering rice is a good idea anyway.
Also, is the Yunnan Garden in Hacienda Heights similar to the one in Monterey Park as far as the cold table goes? Or, are they complete unrelated?

Sichuan/Yunnan Cold Table Items

A few questions:

- Is it OK in these restaurants to only get cold items? Some friends want to do a crawl of various places, mainly focusing on the cold table offerings, but I was unsure if that would be allowed.

- Which places are generally regarded to have the best quality and/or largest selection of cold items?

- Chengdu Taste appears to have the most buzz lately, but since I see no apparent mention of the usual cold appetizers, does it even have a cold table?

Thanks very much.

Chocolate peanut butter cup pie

I like the version at simplethings on West Third Street. I think it's only offered on the weekends.

peanut butter quandry

I was looking for some myself today and noticed that Vicente Foods, too, only had creamy on the shelf. So, I asked the employee in charge of that section about it. He says he's been trying to get more from the manufacturer for many weeks now, but they keep saying they are temporarily out. Seems strange, but FWIW that's what I was told.

Coconut Cream Pie- Los Angeles

I really liked the coconut cream pie at Simple Things on 3rd. Unfortunately, they only offer it on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Austrian Pumpkin Seed Oil

Vicente Foods on San Vicente stocks one brand of the genuine stuff from Austria. Don't remember if it has the exact certification you seek, though.

A Really Great Chinese that I haven't been to yet.

I'm no expert by any means, but for something great, different and not too spicy, how about China Islamic on Garvey in Rosemead?

Diddy Riese Ice Cream Sandwich - A quickie.

FWIW, I REALLY miss their muffins. I work at UCLA and used to pick one up for breakfast on my walk in to the office every morning. They were always fresh & warm, not dense/leaden like so many other muffins, and not overly sweet. And, the best damn 45 cents value around--a few billion times better than those awful 75-cent-and-up vending machine muffins. Aside from the decent blueberry and chocolate ones, I especially liked the cinnamon, orange marmalade and apple-cinnamon varieties. Then, a few years ago, they stopped making them, changed to later working hours, and it's all just a nice memory.

Sabor a Mexico

The couple of times I went, the guy who appeared to be the owner looked familiar but I couldn't remember from where. Today, I figured it out at work at UCLA. He's a long-time painter with UCLA Facilities Management. I ran into him this afternoon when his shift was ending. He said he had saved up enough from his job to open up the business and his wife runs the kitchen and the books. He appreciates all the support, especially validating his intent at being authentic, not cutting corners and making everything to order. Finally, he mentioned that if things continue to go reasonably well, he plans to open another place in a few months--didn't get to ask where since he was rushing off.

Thaitown Street Festival, Sunday 4/1

Just noticed this is scheduled for this coming Sunday on Hollywood Blvd (isn't Songkran usually later in the month?). Anyway, if others have attended in prior years, are the food offerings any good? Or, is it better advised to just duck into one of the many restaurants to eat?
Thanks.

Questions about Marouch & entertainment

Several friends & I have been invited to lunch at Marouch this coming weekend. While we all eagerly look forward to the food, a couple of friends have asked me whether to expect belly dancing, live music or other such entertainment, since such things have nearly ruined some past get togethers.

I realize the odds would probably be lower at lunch than at dinner, but does anyone know if Marouch even has this at all?

Finally, their online menu indicated lamb shank is a weekend special. If so, is it recommended?

Thanks.

Coconut Ice cream.

Agree that this is terrific stuff. To me, it's actually richer than all the other coconut ice creams I've ever tried. This may be due to the "coconut cream" shown on the ingredient list, which I suppose is why the fat content is comparable to ice creams.

Some Quick Questions About Mei Long Village

I've been there several times and have liked everything so far. However, I'm planning to take some vegetarians there and now that I look at their takeaway menu, some questions come up:

- Is it safe to assume the "neutralized goose" appetizer is the cold bean curd based dish usually called vegetarian duck or goose in other Shanghai-ish restaurants? Is this worth ordering there?

- Would their "steamed vegetable dumplings" be of the xiao long bao variety or not? If so, is it any good in comparison with the usual pork or crab & pork offering (which I do find very good indeed)?

- Are there any standout vegetable dishes to order (either as cold appetizer or main dish)?

Thanks.
