Revealed: Michael Voltaggio's New Menu at The Dining Room at The Langham

I was contemplating the drive over to Laguna Beach to check out Strong's new venue and menu but when I looked at it online, there is nothing new. I've eaten everything that's listed on there because it's been the same for the last year. If I am going to travel for dinner, I want something new and innovative. Voltaggio on the other hand, seems worth the drive. Don't knock the diners of Pasadena - I'm certain they will welcome the refreshing change to The Dining Room. Perhaps you think the audience is stodgy and conservative because that's the appearance of the restaurant and the food that was being served. Voltaggio has definitely raised the bar. I'm eating there this weekend and I can't wait.

Dear Canele....

I go there all the time. For the food, obviously.

Dear Canele....

Please get better servers. Your food is so good and I know I'm sacrificing good service for it, but my dining experience would be that much better if you had attentive servers with a memory.

Thank you.

Arbequina Olive Oil

Arbequina olive oil from California Olive Ranch. You can find it at the Silverlake Cheesestore and Whole Foods carries it although I've only been able to find a blend and not the 100% version there.
It's a fantastic olive oil.

Who is the chef de cuisine? Does anyone know? I assume she's not in the kitchen every day, being as busy as she is?

Dinela extended??

I would say that your best deal would have been at the Dining Room at Langham Hotel in Pasadena. $44 for a 3 course menu - a regular sized 3 course meal - at a fine dining Michelin star receiving restaurant? Great deal.

LA Michelin Starred Restaurants ('09 Guide) just released ...

Dining is subjective. It's like seeing a trailer for a movie you're excited about. Then the reviews start to appear and suddenly you're not excited anymore because some failed producer or movie fanatic is getting paid to tell you that you should not spend your money on said film. I will still go to the movie because I liked what initially attracted my attention. I want to see for myself. So what do the movies have to do with this board? Nothing, really. But I hope that people will still visit a restaurant they are interested in, regardless of what a guide book or review tells them. I strongly believe that the Michelin Guide holds more importance to the people working in those restaurants. The results of these reviews and ratings is a way for them to measure their achievements, see how close they are to reaching their goals, whatever they may be. Am I more apt to dine at a restaurant that has received a coveted star? Not necessarily but what the guide does provide me with is a handy quick reference list of places to dine at when I am bored with my current choices. All this said, my only critique about this year' s guide is that The London should not have been considered for the 2009 guide as it has only been open since June. I am sure Gordon Ramsay is worthy however, there are other, more established places that achieved a star after much hard work and attention to service and detail. To throw a bone to a new restaurant like The London is like a kick in the face to these established places. I don't care who the chef is, a new restaurant always has kinks to work out in the beginning and I don't think there is anything that innovative going on at the London so early in the game to make them deserve to be in this book right now. Will I go to The London now that the Michelin Guide has deemed them star worthy? No. I'll go next year, once consistency has been established and I will judge for myself.

Dining alone ... is it really any different? [moved from L.A. board]

No. Like you, I have different food tastes and if my s.o isn't into it, I'd rather dine alone. I can't say I've experienced anything negative. I usually sit at the bar, or if there is not that option I'll sit somewhere where I can observe everything going on around me, from the kitchen to the dining area. I don't think there is anything wrong with dining alone. I am curious to hear if anyone has had a bad experience too/

Michelin 2009 Los Angeles [moved from L.A. board]

Bastide? Really? There has been such inconsistency due to staff changes. I'd be surprised. Not saying they don't deserve it, just think maybe for the 2010 guide? Then again, stranger things have happened.

Anyone want to make any predictions on this new two star?

foodiemahoodie, does the rumor mill state just one new two star?

750ml Closed ?

Apparently. I thought Goat was gone after Goat! I stand corrected. is it just me, or does he seem to change his concepts much too frequently? I liked 750ml. In fact, was just telling friends to check it out.

Bah humbug. It's all part of history, people. And you only received 1 sandwich for 10 cents. You could buy as many as you liked but they were charging normal prices.

Osteria Mozza / Not-so-Nice-a

Unfortunately many times that host or hostess who is the first person to greet you either hates their job or is just bad at it. Sorry but many people are hired for their looks and not necessarily their skills. As for the manager - it's the service industry. Bad taste to inquire about your 4th, who is trying to get to the restaurant smack dab in the middle of traffic hour. Some places are all about service and food, others simply about food and pumping out as many orders as they can on a nightly basis. Sorry your experience was unpleasant.

Cool Restaurants in Pasadena

No on Firefly.
Yes on 750 ml, give Vertical Bistro a try, Tre Venezie, Dining Room at the Langham. I was going to suggest Neomeze. Was there about 7 months ago and enjoyed it but things tend to change apparently.
If by cool you mean good food, try the above. If by cool you mean scene, go to Hollywood.

Anyone Been To Lou On Vine Lately?

Agreed. Great place.. food is very good. The last few times I've gone I've done the Monday Night dinners. I suggest trying any other night just so you can sample different things from the menu. Enjoy!

Ortolan vs Mozza

I will agree with New Trial here. I'd choose Valentino over Mozza for ambience ... Ortolan will surely impress your date.. Now, it's been awhile since I've been to this place, but I went to The Little Door several years ago. It was romantic at the time.. if anyone has been lately feel free to share. Might be a fun choice too.

I am going to keep with the pirate theme that's been around today and say The Redwood on 2nd at Hill downtown. Hands down, best bar food.

LA - what would blow you away if you've been everywhere

I skipped through a lot of this thread as there were so many responses, so my apologies if this was mentioned already, but what about a private dinner at their home? There are some, not all but some, chefs in town who will do this. Just a suggestion.

Neomeze review

I agree with Sebi. I was there several weeks ago and LOVED everything, especially the goat cheese brulee and the lamb chops. Our service was decent (not outstanding but not terrible), and it was a Friday evening.

Visiting from NYC

You really should try Lou on Vine. It's in a very unassuming location (in a strip mall beside a fluff & fold) but FANTASTIC food and wine. Love love love Lou.
