A Guide to Bibimbap (Korean mixed rice)

Joonjoon-thanks for the further tips. I am anticipating it being a project. It is planned as a day of cooking and bonding (and then feasting) with my nephew! I love activities like this!

A Guide to Bibimbap (Korean mixed rice)

Hi Hannaone,

I am planning to cook bibimbap feast with my 21 year old nephew. There will be six people all pretty adventurous eaters. It was his favorite meal when he spent a semester in Beijing! I have never had Korean food but love to cook and am not afraid to expperiment! And with this great guide, I am off to a good start.

My questions are:
Is there a difference between toppings for bibimbap and the banchan?
Do you even serve banchan with bibimbap?
Are there any traditions re toppings for bibimbap ie color, number, sweet vs salty vs sour?

I will have access to a decent asian market but have never really looked for a korean section.

Thanks for any help.

QUICHE! Home Cooking Dish of the Month (April 2015)

I often make a salmon, leek, and asparagus quiche when hosting brunch. I have the fish counter steam a piece of fresh salmon-about 1/2 to 3/4 quarters of a pound. I use a deep dish frozen pie crust (don't judge me!) I sprinkle the crust with parmesan before prebaking. I use one sauteed leek, diced asparagus, and grated dill havarti cheese. I also add fresh dill to the custard mixture. Just add bloody marys, a fruit salad and/or butter lettuce salad and some mini cinnamon rolls!

Pho/Bhan Mi

So driving home tonight on Route 10 West, I noticed a new restaurant on the East side of 10 in Morris Plains

Oolala Pho & Banh Mi. I was going to stop but too much traffic! Will try soon and report back.

this is a good idea?

Reminds of a dish I used to make when I was a Girl Scout! Bisquick wrapped around a cube of Velveeta and cooked in the tomato soup. It was delicious. Not that I would eat that now. ;-)

Help! Whats Wrong With This Recipe - Creamed Spinach

Here is a link to another version of the recipe. It seems as the one you used skipped a step-to strain the bechamel. The onions then just are part of flavoring not part of dish!

Crescenza aka Stracchino in Morris County NJ?

So the quest continues. I stopped at Anthony and Sons yesterday and they did not have it. BUT I did find $30 worth of product I did not know I HAD to have! ;-) And OMG, you can smell the fresh baked bread before you even get out of your car. They do carry BelGioioso brand cheeses so I am going to return with the info and see if I can special order.

When it gets a little warmer next week, I will check out Gary's and Whole Foods in Madison and C'est Cheese in Morristown.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I checked with Esposito's before Christmas-I work in East Hanover and they did not have it.

However, I did not even think of Anthony and Sons. I pass by Denville every day on my way home so I will stop in today.

The quest continues!

Thanks. Come on over. I would love to talk cheese with you. I have lurked for a long time and enjoy your posts.

Funny I just found some burrata in the fridge that has a Jan 1st date. Ate some for lunch and was looking for a way to use the rest!

I lived in Genoa when I was 5 years old and Focaccia di Recco is one of my great food memories.

Shrimp grits

I made a version over the winter vaction using Lap Cheong (Chinese Sausage) and some hoisin sauce in with the tomatoes. Sprinkled scallions and toasted sesame seeds on top. Delicious. No recipe just used SNOB's as a starting point.

Hi
I would like to try to make focaccia di Recco. Before I start calling cheese shops, I was wondering if any CHers have seen this anywhere in the area? BelGioioso makes a domestic brand.
TIA,
Debbie

I have seen pickled pig hocks (and feet) in small jars at my grocery store near the Spam and Vienna Sausages. I have tried-reminded me of headcheese.
