Korean in Vancouver

I've been looking and have not yet found a place that serves san nakji. I'll definitely report if I do find a place (but don't hold your breath).

Korean in Vancouver

Great list fiopo. In Burquitlam, I like Seok Gi Si Dae, Insadong, and Kimbab Cheonguk.

Seoul Doogbaegi on Kingsway is what I would choose.

I think it is hovering around $20.

New westside Thai -- any reports?

The Map they used is wrong (like Sam says - the map pins them to Vancouver WA). The (correct) address is 2120 West Broadway St.
Vancouver.
(corner of Broadway & Arbutus)
Phone : 604 730 0880

Best breads in the Lower Mainland, 2013 version

Andy's Bakery on Commercial for German Rye. (Though "Andy" - actually Jens - recently passed away.) Strawberry Bakery on E1st and Commercial for same.

Some like it hot -- spicy Chinese food options proliferate in Vancouver area

"Autonomous regions" is Beijing's own hypocritical term for these areas.

Vancouver Essential Restaurants- Can anyone point me to a list?

I think the original family still owns Peaceful. They are overstretched with multiple locations now though.

That 8 Traditions categorization has long been anachronistic. The landscape is probably better represented with a more simplified Four Schools http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_... plus the Autonomous regions (Islamic Western cuisines and Tibetan, etc) plus Taiwanese.

Sobeys buys Safeway Canada

I guess that's good. It probably won't sway me from staying well away of Safeway though.

Authentic Chinese downtown Vancouver

Downtown - Dinesty and Kirin would be my two choices.

Italian Day on the Drive?

The Portuguese and the Italians seemed to be having a smoke-off this year. I have never seen it so smoky.

Italian Day on the Drive?

Agreed that it may be too crowded now. But pro-tip from a Drive native: come early...11 or 11:30 before the official noon opening. Many vendors are ready to go and sell you stuff at that time. Between 1pm and 5pm, it becomes pure insanity. That's when you duck into the neighbourhood to catch a couple of performances at In the House Festival. You can come back after the shows when the crowds would have abated.

New to Vancouver, wondering about IzaKaya?

I like the Guus. The original on Thurlow is my favourite. But why do one when you can do the crawl- start at Guu Thurlow and walk down the hill on Robson and hit them all.

Italian Day on the Drive?

Via Tevere has a new saltimbocca truck (actually their old Ragazzi truck that sold pizza). Great sandwiches made with woodfire flatbread.

It's Vancouverized for sure. They even have a couple of vegetarian options. (Gasp!). They do have a 15(?) foot smoker in the parking lot and they use wood. I'm not a huge southern BBQ guy, so please check it out flowbee. Need some relevant intel on the place.

Have you tried Back Forty? They use real smokers, real wood. It's good. Admittedly, I usually go for their bucket of chicken.

Help - Radisson Cambie

Is it actually a "brewpub"? I don't recall that they brewed their own beer.

The only brewpub that I know about in Richmond is this one http://www.365daysofdining.com/2012/0...
which is waaaay out in the sticks.

Help - Radisson Cambie

There is an Asian market called T&T right in the same complex. You may find the staples you mention. Your selection widens immensely if you include Asian snacks. The closest western grocery store is the Superstore just a bit south on No 3 Rd.

For wine, there is a somewhat overpriced liquor store at Lansdowne Mall one train stop away. Local brewpubs - hmm can't think of any off hand. Take a train into town (Vancouver) and you will find options.

Agreeing with reiney on craft beer. This city is emerging to be a major centre in this movement. The beer is getting better and better with each year. It still has a way to go in terms of overall range and quality compared to a couple of the top US cities, but it is getting pretty close. Tourism Vancouver/BC should pay attention to this trend and market the heck out of it.

Agreed ^

I specified non-stick since this may be Georgia Straight's first time attempting this. Even better than stainless is a well seasoned carbon steel fry pan.

I think Sea Harbour still has the best squab. They do seafood well. There have been a few negative reports fron the time they moved to a new location, but I think things have settled a bit. Other worthy options include Red Star and Kirin.

Best Dumpling in Vancouver/Burnaby/Richmond/

The dumplings Grayelf mentioned are cooked gyoza/guotie/jiaozi-style: Fry them flat side down undisturbed in a bit of oil in a nonstick pan, then just as the bottoms start to brown, add a splash of water to the pan, cover so the dumplings steam. The water will evaporate and the dumplings will start to fry again. Uncover. When the bottoms are golden brown, the dumplings are done. Invert a serving plate on top and carefully flip them into it. Serve with a dipping sauce. Soy, vinegar, ginger slivers.
