Steak 'n Shake equivalent in SoCal?

Time your commute and try the burgers at the Apple Pan. I grew up on both P&B & AP and love em

great tostada

I concur;their Salpicon chicken tostada is excellent!

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

totally agree with cacio e pepe-this LA fixture is unique and cannot be compared-it is what it is as far as burger, fries, paper cups & hats

On the other hand the BCP can hold its own against any other

THE DONUT MAN Question

Primos has the best Buttermilk bars!!

The Donut Man has excellent raised & cake doughnuts(especially when warm).

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

I prefer Law's because it does'nt have too many apples, kind of a balance of crust and filling, and its slight tartness can be offset by the warm cinnamon sauce.

If you want a HUGE pie Los Rios may be what you want.
Happy Hunting!!

Handel's Ice Cream is now serving Pumpkin Swirl

We can't be forced to do without our favorites, so to keep the family happy I end up buying 5-6 pints, or else. :--)

Handel's Ice Cream is now serving Pumpkin Swirl

Just had my first installment of Handel's seasonal Pumpkin Swirl Ice Cream and it's better than I remember it from last year! Yum

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

I so luv their cinnamon sauce, great breakfasts, and Friday nite flat-iron seak dinners. We enjoy their pies every X-mas, Thanksgiving or just whenever I want apple pie during the season. I live 15 min away.
Yes, that is so true, the apples are different every year. I usually buy some from Snowline and Los Rios Rancho plus the kids enjoy picking them. I will look for Wood Acres, thanks ciaolette.
I like the raw cider from the store across the street and down from Law's 1/4 mile or so-I think its called Mama Law's or at least they are afiliated with Law's. I used to swear by Los Rios raw cider but it had a funny after taste the last two times.
Ubergeek makes a good point-bring an ice chest for the raw cider unless you live close-by.

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

Law's Coffee Shop has the best Apple pie, however many other places up there make pies with more apples but they don't compare to the apple or dutch apple pies at Law's.

Frozen Custard in SD or OC area

Theron's Frozen Custard in Redlands is pretty good. They have two flavors, vanilla and chocolate, plus a seasonal flavor. They also have fuit and mix-ins.

Only open Thurs-Sunday 11-8

Best Lebanese food?

Wahib's Middle East Restaurant in Alhambra has good authentic Lebanese fare with big portions, they also have lunch and weekend buffets.

ISO the Real King Taco

yeah me too. I now live in IE (aka: the culinary desert) and work almost daily in San Diego so I don't get to LA as often as I like.

Keep those mills a grinding!!!

ISO the Real King Taco

Yes Servorg, that is a true fact but I always love a reply! :-)

Thanks for the Pardise link..my parents will get a romp through memory lane when I show them the article. Besides being customers my Dad was Bill's Insurace Broker in the 70"s.

Does Nick's serve the Bill's quesadilla?

Best sushi for $80 pp or less

except for the lobster and the blue crab hand rolls.....

Non-Sushi Japanese Restaurants

My 1st thought is Ita Cho on Beverly but I have not been there for three yrs. They had excellent sashimi but no sushi. Their claim to fame is a wide array of small plates of interesting traditional Japanese food. Kind of like Japanese Tapas.
The original Ita Cho location rocked! It was in a Hollywood strip mall next to an adult book store. It had real character and tables with long wooden benches and valet parking of course.
Many places have since opened copying their menu concept but Ita Cho is definately worth checking out!

Little Tokyo has many good places and is always changing but these old places worth checking out are:

The Tempura Bar inside Thousand Cranes restaurant

Tha charcol grilled chicken yakitori place near the corner of 2nd & Central (i think those are the streets-someone please help me out b/c can't remember name)

and (also can't remember the name) the japanese diner type place with a counter and booths on 1st st-it's open till 1-2 am Fri-Sat and with a line

The Shabu Shabu restaurant

Good Luck!

Los Angeles coffee - I'm calling you out (many boos, and one hooray)

In my opinion La Mill and Intelligentsia are LA's best. But there are some local nieghborhood coffe houses that have a barista that knows their shit. So they know cupping and roasting are key to a good pull of esspresso and they buy their beans from Coffee Klatch, Jones , or Intelligentsia.

A couple years ago I invested $3000 in my own esspreso setup and it quickly pain for itself. I am good in the morning for a couple double shots but my wife was hitting up Peets or Starbucks 3 times a day !
I have an Expobar Brewtusll plumbed-in with an RO and everclear carbon filter on 20 amp timer so its already on and ready when I get up. Mazer P grinder. Usually I brew organic beans from Ecco Caffe out of Santa Rosa, master cupper and roaster Andrew Barnett is phenomenal, and he has some extraordinary experimental, single origin and limited relaese. Also we use beans from the local Coffee Klatch (Perry Family)or Inteligentsia or Jones (in that order).

Bottom line: I can pull the best shot in LA ;-)

Where to buy really good watermelon?

#1-Seeded watermelons are generally more flavorfull
#2-Organic produce over conventional
#3-knock on em,listen to its pitch, look for black suger "bleed" spots.
#4-too soft is over ripe, hence sweet but mushy and grainy
#5 too hard =not ripe

*picking out a great watermelon is not rocket science, it's just alot of luck and a little skill!

Anywhere to eat in Joshua Tree?

Try the Indian Food at Sam's Pizza!

Best onion rings in LA...who's got them?

I agree Twoheys has been my favorite sine the 70's, but I must say last time I was there, Jan 09, they were dry and overdone.

What's the spiciest (yet still edible) Dish you've had in LA?

Yes, Jazz had a certain look in her eye when my brother and I told her we love hot spicy food, so she recomended the dry curry with pork. I love hot food but I really couldn't enjoy the other dishes after that...it just kept getting hotter and hotter and pretty soon I was done!!
By far the hottest dish I have ever eaten!!

Looking for New Doughnuts

finally, someone getting to the most critical aspect of doughnut eating! When they are just made and still warm!!!! THANK YOU young_chower!

A slighty crunchy texture on the exterior is also key, especially on the cakes.

To me, even the best doughnuts are just mediocre after a couple hours. That first "golden hour" is when they are at their peak!

Good Restaurants in the Inland Empire

I have not re-visited Kimo's for 2 yrs. now but have tried it several times with mixed results on fish quality but he was very rude EVERY time so I prefer to drive to Ken's and I live in Redlands.

Best Chocolate cake in LA anyone?

The Parisian chocolate cake at Portos in Glendale is fluffy and light and excellent!

And for the other extreme I love the Delice Au Chocolat at Amandine...but I guess its not a cake

Red Velvet Cake

Russel's moved to old town Pasadena long ago and back then their food sucked but their meringes still towered....but pies were so so and I have not tried them since. I wonder if perhaps I went on a bad day because there still there..? Are they worth re-visiting??

ISO the Real King Taco

Ok thanks.
My parents used to take me to a Taco Village right around there on Beverly in the mid 70's. I was very young but I kinda remember it being in the middle of the block on the right side as your heaqding East. Is it the same place?
They also went to Bill's Paradise, is that still around?

ISO the Real King Taco

I always thought El Taurino was older than King Taco...does anybody know??

ISO the Real King Taco

Is Taco Village on Beverly Bl.?

Are there any Yucatecan Restaurants outside of CI & Flor de Yucatan?

Casa Maya in Mentone is that place near Redlands. This mom & pop place is a great IE find!
Yes their menu does have Northern dishes as well as those from Southern mexico. They also have organic rice and beans, great fresh fish and excellent cochinita pibil.

Looking For A Slice Of Pie

Apple Pan has the best Bannana Cream and very good Pecan.

Pie n Burger's pies are sweet in general, and they have very good cream and merengue pies but if you don't like it sweet I would recommend getting their fresh peach, strawberry, or ollaberry, when in season.

Tito's Tacos - What's the Big Deal??

me too!! :0
Tito's is a perfect example of a "one-off" that has beeen doing something right, knows it and is smart enough to not change it.

Personally I love these type of places.Finding these type of places is a big reason why I am here. For work, I travel alot around the country and I am always asking the local people where they like to go to eat. Sometimes they try to direct me to a chain but I just ask for a local place, whats popular, and I never get tierd of the adventure and sometimes find great places with excellent food presenting me with a snapshot of that regions culinary tastes.

I love Tito's tacos with their unique tomatoey salsa and the course ground pickled jalapenos, also I appreciate their chili colorado burros and fresh tortilla chips.
I don't care for there tamales though.
